CBCS GradedSignatures

FYSA: Reholder Verified Sig Cautionary Tale21959

Collector blackcatcomix private msg quote post Address this user
Hi all,

This is PSA announcement to the community.

Please note that if you submit a CBCS graded book which also had a verified signature from circa 2016, CBCS will likely not honor the submission and will likely refuse to reholder the book.

I recently submitted a CBCS Graded & Verified Signature book to CBCS to be reholdered. It had one of the older CBCS Verified Signature labels, and I wanted it to be updated to the new Verified Signature label. CBCS used CSA to verify the signature when they originally graded the book back in 2016.

Upon receiving the reholder submission, CBCS customer service emailed me and stated they would not reholder the book since they used CSA to verify the signature when originally graded in 2016. CBCS informed me that since they no longer partner with CSA, they would not reholder the book and I would have to have it regraded and reverified as a completely brand new submission.

If you are interested in submitting a CBCS Graded & Verified Signature book to
CBCS to be reholdered, check the back of the label to see if it they used CSA to verify the signature. If they used CSA to verify the signature, they will not honor the reholder submission despite it having a CBCS Verified Signature label.

Furthermore, I am to assume this also means collectors should use caution if they have a CBCS Graded & Verified Signature book from circa 2016, when they partnered with CSA. Since CBCS refuses reholder a book which previously had their own label, I can only assume they do not feel these signatures are actually authentic since they will not reholder them.

That's a false assumption.

CBCS in 2016 is not the same company as it is in 2025. Now, it is essentially Beckett doing business as CBCS and not CBCS partnered with CSA. New owners with a new set of rules. I agree that it sucks, but I can certainly understand them not wanting to put their name, reputation, and responsibility on to someone else's work. Again, I understand it, but I don't necessarily like it.

It's the same as submitting a book with a signature witnessed by the cgc.

All that said, I appreciate you sharing your experience so the rest of us are aware.

That's ridiculous. CBCS needs to stand by their product. That's no different than saying "we need to regrade the book, because the original grader who looked at it no longer works here at CBCS."

CBCS needs to change this policy.

Both CBCS and CGC have downgraded comics during the reholder process even though there was no visible damage to their slab

CBCS at times, may not honor their past grades (it may be with good reason, defects can occur post-slabbing after years of improper storage, shipping back and forth, return of pressing defects etc.).

Here's a link to a past discussion about reholdering:

And from this thread a video showing a comic that got downgraded during the reholdering process:

I get what your saying but this is a false equivalence. They can not have a Beckett verified label on a signature they didn't verify....CSA verified the signature. CBCS grades the books....signature verification is done by Beckett. They can not and should not have a Becket verified label for a CSA verified signature.

It's only verified signatures by CSA, not witnessed signatures by CBCS.

Unless CBCS is willing and/or able to have a current label that states signature verification was done by CSA, they can not have a CSA verified signature with a Beckett label....if I was CBCS/Beckett, no way would I allow a CSA verified signature under a CBCS/Beckett label....it wouldn't be true.

At best, maybe they shouldn't charge or maybe discount the charge for the new verification process (with no guarantee it will pass).

I agree. The instances of this are so uncommon that CBCS should charge only a reholder fee and do any regrading or verification for free. But that would require a company that's focused on customer service, so chances of that are slim to none.
