Thoughts on trading card graders?21949

COLLECTOR dielinfinite private msg quote post Address this user
I’m looking to get some of my old trading cards (MTG, Pokemon, some non-sports) to equal parts sale and keep.

I’m currently weighing between CGC, PSA, and Beckett.

I’m primarily leaning towards Beckett for the non-signed cards as I like having the sub-grades available for selling and the price isn’t too different from other services. I’d love to hear people’s experiences with service and any price differences between services that they’ve noticed.

I do have plenty of signed cards and unfortunately Beckett doesn’t make it as simple as submitting with CBCS. While CGC is the cheapest service with signature verification options, PSA that much more expensive.

Beckett requires signed cards to be submitted through Beckett Authentication which charges fees based on the individual being verified. The signatures on the cards I have are generally about $20 but the fee can go as high as $50 just for the sig verification on top of the card grading fee and a required sig grading fee. And I can’t put signed and non- signed cards in one order so it’d be even more expensive on the shipping side.

On a test of 16 cards, 10 signed, 6 un-signed CGC came to $532, PSA at $585, and Beckett at $593 not including the unsigned cards, so I think Beckett might be out of consideration for the signed cards, though again, I’m interested in people’s experiences with the different services

Honestly I think Beckett slabs are the way to go if your looking to keep something in your personal collection. Best slab by far when compared to the other two for protection and in regard to grading. Also, you can't beat that black label if your lucky enough to obtain one.

PSA for flipping purposes since they are the easiest to sell on the market. Think of PSA being just like how CGC is for comic market.

CGC for bulk economy submissions, or for the authorized card signings if they are having an active signing event. Personally I prefer both Beckett and CGC for my comic cut cards since most of my collection is already CGC and CBCS based. The PSA slabs just don't do it for me both aesthetically for the label and the slab used for the card.

YEsterday a friend of mine was asking me about this. He wants to slab some Michael Jordan cards and was asking me which is the best option. The slabs will be resold. Which would you mostly recommend using for resale?

Definitely PSA, although if he thinks the cards are immaculate he could try sending them in to Beckett for that black label.

There is also AGS. Fairly new, but they run the cards through an AI scanner rather than a visual appraisal. My son got a pokemon 10.0 with them.

I was at Collect A Con in Kansas City Saturday and can tell you PSA was the majority of the room. I heard multiple people say you can buy that 9 or 9.5 Beckett and it will be a 10 at PSA.I use Beckett but if you are going to flip them, then PSA appears to get you more money.

Thanks for the input!

One more point for PSA is that they accept submissions through Gamestop at $20 each with a flat $10 shipping fee ($5 if you have a paid Gamestop Membership) with a max FMV of $500. I’m not sure if that already includes the insurance fee built-in but it’s a pretty good deal if it does. I’m not sure if you can submit signed cards through them though.

Additionally, as Gamestop seems to be trying to expand from being a purely video game store and more into collectibles, they also buy graded cards with paid members getting a 5% bonus to their card sales

I have dropped cards off at local sports card shows that Beckett attends. I believe the last couple of times they had deals going on. We didn't have anything signed but we did pay for the subgrades. I think the last deal basically paid for that. For me, I really like the Beckett slab and label over the PSA ones. The TAG slab looks cool too, but not sure how they grade. I watched a few videos on them in the beginning and wasn't sold on that.

Unfortunately Beckett’s not doing any shows near me for the foreseeable future but I’m keeping an eye on deals.

I would really like to use them for my signed cards but the price difference is just too big to ignore. Maybe I’ll use it for a couple of personal items but they don’t make sense for larger shipments

Yeah I get that. Just remember you get up in those higher prices and the grading cost scales with it. I believe they start scaling at PSA for $500 and up.

@Terk13 I think the highest value cards I have are approaching $500 but the rest are more in the $100-$200 range. Which is another reason paying $55 per signed card with BGS isn’t terribly appealing

I have been following this because I have recently acquired a Jack Kirby signed card. I have used Beckett to authenticate a couple of signatures on cards and photos. I need to investigate PSA at GameStop. I owe it to them. I made some money on the Roaring Kitty / GameStop stock business a few years ago.

If reselling psa is gonna be where you get top dollar. Unless you think the cards have a chance of a Beckett black label which is arguably the most valuable graded card you can get. For PC I would go with Beckett, they have the best slabs and like you said the sub grades are nice.

Also be aware of of psa upcharging on cards that grade high and move up a value tier

I’ve figured out my first submission is going to be 18 unsigned cards for Beckett containing most of the cards I hope to sell off.

Good luck with the grades! I did some MTG cards around this time last year. They have been sitting in a closet for 30 years. I sent in 5 duel lands and came back 8.5-9.5s. I thought one had the possibility for a 10 but it didn't happen. Now they are sitting in the closet graded! I think all together, we sent in around 20 cards. Most of that was my son's Pokémon PC cards.

I recently went through my childhood Polkamon cards -

I have the Mew promo holo, but since it was on the floor of my parents' house for at least 15 years it's got some impact tics on the side.

How good are card pressings? I have a first edition safari Pikachu, multiple 1999 Base Set Pikachu in mint condition (sometimes sleeve placement really does work), Oddish 1st Team Rocket, Sbarina's Gengar, etc a lot of $2-$4 cards if raw it looks like.

How do I know what's really valuable though?

@karn9 I wish I could help you out but I have no idea! I usually just tag along with my adult son and look at the insane prices on these newer art cards. I believe a lot of venders use the price from TGC Player but Go Collect has a data base too.

@karn9 I’ve been using an app called Collectr to give me an idea of card values. While I don’t take any of the values as gospel, it does give you an idea of what might be worth grading and selling.

Scarcity, demand, and condition are all important in pricing and that can be hard to gage if you’re not well versed in the hobby, especially the first two. The app can help a bit with that but still expect to find that most cards won’t be worth much

@karn9 you’re going to want to use eBay sold listings and a site called 130pt for most recent comps
