The new Superman James Gunn movie is possibly the best Superman movie ever made, IMHO. It is a clear anti-war film, in a time when such films are sorely needed to break thru to the general public's illusions and its' success at the box office is a welcome event. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5AMoCdYh5U On its' heels comes Marvel's FF reboot, and Marvel seems to be dropping the ball. From all indications, it appears as Marvel is still unable to drop their obsession with identity politics as the driving points in their last few movies, with the exception of Gunn's GOTG 3. First came their decision to not introduce Norin Rad, and introduce Shalla Bal as a female version of some sort of the Silver Surfer in his place. While the actress who is playing this character certainly proved herself in Ozarks, this is a step down. Now, they've dropped John Malkovitch (Red Ghost) from the finished film entirely. https://people.com/john-malkovich-cut-from-fantastic-four-first-steps-heartbreaking-decision-11774238 |

Maybe dropping Malkovich just made more sense to the storyline of the movie. I'll hold off judgment until I see FF. 🤞

That said, we could've had super apes. Super Apes! I loved Superman, but I'm almost as excited for FF. |

I did enjoy the movie. But there were some quite significant flaws. And I don't want to even get started on a 5'0", 80 lb soaking wet, cute-as-a-button Hawkgirl as a fierce, powerful warrior. I mean Gunn.... wtf were you thinking when you did that casting of her? sheesh And her shrieking! my god. Bad bad bad bad call all around |

Quote:Originally Posted by DWeeB1967 The final trailer for the FF reboot looks very good, and I hope this movie doesn't fall flat; don't get me wrong. I think the premise of the 1960's setting was a sharp idea, but cutting the Red Ghost is certainly contrary to what one would expect to see in the 1960's Red Scare/Cold War era. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Ghost_(character) The director even cited that the decision in cutting the Red Ghost stemmed from the 1960's setting (paraphrased from the interview with that director which I linked in my first post)....that seems nonsensical to me, for the reasons I gave above. I certainly maintain that the idea of introducing a female "Silver Surfer" in Shalla-Bal is just counterproductive and will not help this reboot....and a lot is riding on this reboot for Marvel. If this character is used as a stepping stone to introduce the original Silver Surfer (Norrin Rad)...or Marvel execs wised up and decided to do so in the form of a last minute post credits scene or during the Red Ghost reshoots....and I think the latter is fairly likely if the Silver Surfer and Galactus are going to be the big baddies.....at least I'd hope so. |

If you watched Superman and missed the identity politics, you should probably watch it again. As for the Red Ghost, I don't have any feelings either way and am happy to wait for a movie to come out before making a decision.

Seriously, on what planet was that a good casting decision? Bizarroworld? I could actually get on board with that. But as is, it's just so dumb |

SPOILER WARNING: I liked Hawkgirl and the casting, but I thought there wasn't enough development of her. And yes, I thought the shrieking wasn't great. That being said, I'm convinced that her killing the Boravian president at the end of the movie is going to be followed up in future projects. When Gunn was first hired, he posted DC works that inspired him. Obviously, All Star Superman was one, but Kingdom Come was the other. Superman doesn't care about government boundaries or treaties when people are in danger, and, by the end of the movie, he's inspired other metahumans to do the same. I'm not saying we'll get an exact adaptation of Kingdom Come, but I definitely think those themes could be explored over the next 10 years. |

I read somewhere that a majority of Hawkgirl's origin will be told in Peacemaker next month. She supposedly will have a lot of screen time. Hopefully she is standing next to Adrian Chase most of the time making her seem tall.
