Reholder Question for High Value Comic21820

Collector MichaelKramer312 private msg quote post Address this user
Hi All,

I want to reholder my AF 15 2.5. Appreciate any suggestions to keep it economical (e.g. Post Office vs. Fedex) to ship to CBCS. With added insurance I'm looking about $100 from USPS to $280 Fedex to ship to CBCS. Another option is waiting for a big NY show to drop off to CBCS. Open to suggestions.

Appreciate anyone has any experience with reholding high price books.

Thank you CBCS community!

Mike

It's like the Roach Motel for comic collectors. chester15 private msg quote post Address this user
When shipping high value books by USPS, a lot of the cost is for insurance, if using the USPS insurance rate schedule in hundred dollar increments. If you ship it Registered, the insurance is surprisingly more economical, like half.

It can take longer for Registered, as it is kept in locked bags, in secure areas, and only certain personnel can handle it. There could be times it doesn't move right out of a facility. It has no specific time expectation, so can take a week or two.

For USPS registered mail is the only way to go I believe, all other services top out at $5k in coverage where registered mail is $50k I believe. You can also look into third party insurance companies for collectables.

I would also recommend really thinking this over and weigh out the possible outcomes. Worse case the book is damaged during transit or looses a grade during the reholder process.

Either way good luck and enjoy the book.

Personally, I would wait to drop off with CBCS at a show they are attending, if that is a reasonable/do-able option for you.

Edit: I did this (drop-off cbcs for re-holder) with my Hulk 181 9.6. Simple, easy, flawless, safe, and gave me peace of mind

Registered Mail is either in the personal possession of the postal worker who signed for it, or under lock and key. This is the only way I send books over $10K in value.

My vote would also be waiting for an in-person drop off at a convention if you already plan on attending and aren’t in a hurry.
I’m sure other people aren’t as nervous, but my stomach is in a knot when I have dropped of my favorite keys (much lower value) at the post office.

If they slab isn't damaged, then what would be your reason for reholdering the book?

Keep an eye on the card shows listed as well. They usually will except them there too.

I've never had any issue with show drop-offs before, but you do know that they pack the books up and ship them back to CBCS at the end of the show though? So, you're adding some transportation to the steps.

It might be most cost effective to pay for a Collect Insure policy for the year and shipping the book FedEx/Signature Required and using your Collector's insurance to cover it. If you do this, I would recommend documenting the packaging and shipping thoroughly before sending a book of that value.
