Mike Zeck Art Question21800

Collector Briten private msg quote post Address this user
I have an opportunity to purchase a commissioned piece of art by Mike Zeck. The art was previously published in a magazine with a Mike Zeck interview.

The image is that of a GI Joe character. It’s a very detailed full character with some minor background.

The seller is willing to work with me on price but he’s firm at 200 more than I want to pay.

I would ask for your opinions. If this was a punisher sketch I’d eat the 200. I usually don’t care about future resale value, but I don’t want to buy high and get killed on resale if I ever sell in the future.

Thoughts?

Thankd

GI JOE is very hot right now, with the Eregon reboot. Old school is highly collectable

@Briten Really nice piece. What about offering something in trade to make up the difference?

1.) Do you like the piece? If you don't like looking at it, don't buy it.

2.) What would it cost you to travel to and attend an event where Mike Zeck was a guest and commission the same sketch?

3.) If I was already willing to spend $1000 and could afford the extra $200, that wouldn't stop me from completing the sale.

@DrWatson good points. Zeck hasn’t been doing commissions for the last 5 years. I met him in Connecticut back in 2018 and he signed a bunch of my stuff.

If it was the Punisher, I wouldn’t hesitate.

4.) Will you be kicking yourself if someone else buys the sketch before you make up your mind?

If you're getting 'killed' by $200, the original art game is not for you. Mike is an A+ tier artist. Bite the bullet and conquer, or leave it be.

I don't believe this....and I know you don't care that I don't believe this. GAC private msg quote post Address this user
When I look at a book I really want for my collection, I'll usually pay more than FMV if I need to, to get it.....if it's a flipping situation, obviously, I won't pay more than FMV.

If this is for your PC and you love the piece...20% above your price is not too bad.

Will you regret not buying it?

Published art tends to command more than sketches.

How much does the seller want?

$200 for a detailed piece of published art by Zeck doesn’t seem like a deal breaker to me.

But if it is to you for some reason, I would suggest asking the seller if he would take a slab worth $200 to $250 instead of the $200 in cash difference.

Edit:

Just read the later responses in this thread…

Congrats to the OP.
