Canadians shafted by FedEx import/taxes/fees21705

Collector ESC private msg quote post Address this user
Thought it would be able to import back into Canada without fees. Received package with no warning of any fees required but after 1 month FedEx just sent me a bill for $70 CAD for two graded comics worth about $150.00

Call them....explain to them that it's your own property being returned to you.

The fees are made up of taxes and brokerage fees....call them and fight it.....I've fought those fees with about an 80% success rate.

If the declared value on the package was $150 they should have only charged you GST ($7.50) and a $10 processing fee. If they have applied a charge for tariffs you should dispute it. Let them know the classification for the items is 4903.00.00.10

Here is the breakdown

Canada HST (taxes) $18.71 (based on $143.91 declared value $100 USD in CAD)
FedEx Clearance Entry Fee $27.50
FedEx Disbursement fee $11.40
HST Taxes (for those two FedEx Fees) $5.06
total $62.67

This on a total of $100 USD declared
Value of my own goods.

Duties are zero. This is just Canadian taxes and fees from FedEx

The invoice from FedEx also Includes a scanned copy of the message “Customs department” notice: the items in this package were not purchased. The package contains items that are being returned …”

Its been 2yrs or so but I never got these fees when dealing with the "other" guys....they do so much wrong but somehow get this right

On the plus side for the near future I'll no longer be dealing with US based businesses, so this won't be an issue

@ESC if you are ordering from the US I would always use USPS. It will cost more upfront but have not had any silly crap like this. With Fed Ex it has happened half the time. Once was $40 on a $100 shipment, the other was like $370 on a shipment insured for $1,000. I have only shipped to Canada 8-10 times but will never use Fed Ex again. Also never had a problem with ordering from Canada when shipped by Canada Post delivered by USPS 6-7 times.
Just my experience. Listen to the fellow Canadians and contest that charge. Plus getting the bill a month later is just wrong. Is that common to do in Canada?
Also welcome to the forum!

I take it CBCS doesn't utilize that Canadian office anymore. The results may have been inconsistent when some folks used them.

You can not fight the taxes or duties...what FedEx is charging you is brokerage fees...it's the fees they charge over and above the shipping cost for brokering the shipment through Customs on your behalf.

Hi, unfortunately didn’t have a choice with CBCS for shipping to Canada. The only option is (or was) FedEx. There is no Canadian office of CBCS that I am aware of.

USPS does hand off packages for final mile delivery by Canada Post and you don’t get dinged with these outrageous fees.

It’s normal for FedEx to bill you later but this was an unexpected one.

Just an update, CBCS declared the commodity value at $100.00 US and that is what I was taxed on. The rest is just paying FedEx to collect those fees. The tax should have been zero, thus nothing to collect and therefore no fees from FedEx for doing nothing. I will update if I am successful…

UPS and FedEx always want to collect any HST/GST just so they can tack on those fees. If you live anywhere near the border your best bet may be to have them sent to a US package service and go pick them up.
