Underrated Artists: Artists that Should be More Popular21690

Frank Brunner is terribly underrated in my opinion. Beautiful stuff!

What artists do you think need more love?

I never hear about Erik Larsen or his inkers Al Gordon, Randy Emberlin, Mike Machlan. Covers listed respectively. I like their ASM work.

Nick Cardy went through a period where he got really graphic (in the artistic sense not the bloody sense) with his covers. But Neal Adams and Bernie Wrightson were taking DC by storm so he seems to be overlooked.

Nestor Redondo.

Can anyone imagine having to follow Bernie Wrightson on "Swamp Thing?" Imagine how tough an assignment that must have been. He did it, though, and he did it well.

@Siggy I think the fact that Tim Vigil was best known for drawing ultra-violent comics like Faust might have hurt him a far as notoriety (just my opinion). No question the guy is very talented, though. The image you posted is insane!!

He was signing at a small local con here in Texas a few months back. I'm not sure whether he lives down here or what but I was surprised to find out he was there. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make that show.

@DWeeB1967 I definitely agree his body of work keeps him from being the guy parents take to see at a convention, and perhaps not necessarily for the violence.

He might be my favorite inker right now. I'd love it if he inked my Wrightson piece, but I doubt I could afford it. His brushwork on Batman's torso on this piece was the first thing that drew my eye over and over when I saw it in his binder, and after I said I'd take it he mentioned how he was very pleased with his work on that torso. I had that fanboy thrill of learning the thing I appreciated most about the art was shared by the artist.

And last I heard, he lives in Sacramento, CA, but given his, um... polly-tickle views, I wouldn't be surprised if he moved.

It never hurts to ask. Maybe you'd catch him on a good day.

Though his figure drawing can be wonky, Ed Hannigan's designs and concepts for covers were some of the coolest in early '80s.

Big John Buscema was, is, and will always be my favorite.
So many of today's artists list Buscema as their primary inspiration.

He's been gone for many years so many probably forget. But that guy was just unreal.

@Nuffsaid111 Totally agree...but for me, John is not underrated...For me, he's in my top 5 artists for sure...right up there with Kirby, Wrightson, Romita Sr., and Ditko....I'm not sure if others place him that high on their list, but if they don't, they really should.

@GAC yep. They sure should. He does get the accolades, but I also think he gets overshadowed by folks like Wrightson, Adams, Kirby, etc...

Even if we take the microcosm of this forum we have a Wrightson thread; pretty sure a neal adams thread a few months ago, etc..
We need a Buscema thread! Lol

One of the artists I came across in my back issue adventures was Sandy Plunkett. He appears to have worked at both Marvel and DC from the 1970s to 1990s. Not positive as to why he was never bigger than he was.
