Someone on reddit running a test of various storage/display options in direct sunlight. Credit to user: silverage12 These results are one month in. ![]() Moral of the story, don't display your books in sunlight. But if you do... choose wisely. Also in the test are the same books/storage in indirect lighting...but the results aren't interesting. Yet. ![]() |

2 questions here: 1. Are all these rated for uv protection? 2. When you say direct sun light, you mean literally the sun is hitting the comics and not indirect sunlight? Appreciate this type of stuff. Helps us as collectors make better choices. Thank you silverage12 |

I can remember in the "old time comic stores" in the 80's, owners would put comics in the display windows of the store for years. Those things were like white after a few years

They should have put one of the test books under UV protective glass (as if framed) for comparison.

When I was younger I left some dollar bin books in the back window of my car for a year or so. The bags basically disintegrated when I went to pick them up. The books were sun bleached but the bags were gone.

Maybe it's just me, but I very rarely do my comic booking in the day light. 99.99% is done at night. I don't want any chance of damage from the sun. All my graded books are in black storage boxes and when I take them out to look at them they are amazing!! Bright vibrant colors on all.

@Rafel that's cool. I personally struggle with owning comics and storing them in bins to never see the light of day. I love to display it otherwise I feel why even own it, if you're not enjoying it. And I enjoy reading and displaying.

So very true. I have in my collection Incredible Hulk 102 (CBCS 9.6), ASM 20 (CBCS 9.2), Avengers 1 (CBCS 7.5) and Savage Tales 1 (CBCS 9.6) which I'll bring them out to be seen but to display them.... naaaaa. I know everyone here has some amazing copies and grades but do they display them? |

Quote:Originally Posted by Sigur_Ros Been a while since but I recall Rick at Immaculate Comics running similiar trialsto find the best UV protection for displaying slabbed comics. FWIW, Rick has a degree in chemistry and has works in the scoiences field for the US govt for years. IIRC, the gist he laid out in this video was basically- no matter what, don't store your books in direct sunlight, even with the very best UV protection. I can say that leaving a newsstand fresh looking silver age raw book (from what I believe had likely not seen the light of day since it was mailed to the kid who had a subscription to it in 1965 or so) on my desk (exposed to direct sunlight for less than one day, had a signifigant effect. I say this because the book had a faint, non-color breaking subscription fold....and 2 or so very small, non color breaking spine ticks. I was confident it would pull a 9.6 with an outside chance at a 9.8, after I pressed it. I bought the book from MCS for $5 or $6, a stock image listing graded by MCS at 4.0. I had meant to place the book on top of a cold press board until I had time to do the work on the book- but something else came up and I completely forgot about that book until I saw I had left it on my desk the next day. Nor,a;;y, I'd just lay a few sheets of black construction paper over a raw book if it had such a defect that-filing it into a bag/board and a short box without being pressed would likely cause spine damage. That very book is now sitting on a bookshelf in my bedroom with a few sheets of black construction paper over it, just another of the "books I need to press and sub at some point" ![]() |
