I hear their hourly rate is outrageous! sportshort private msg quote post Address this user
I bought this book about six months ago, it cost me about 20 dollars. I only bought it because I thought it was cool, it was already graded and it was 20 dollars! I just posted it on the "comic book day of the year" thread. I wanted to see what year this book was from so I enlarged the image, that's when I realized that the book has a double cover! I only have one other book with a double cover. What an awesome surprise! That made me wonder if anyone else had a similar experience.

Does anyone else have examples of a pleasant or unexpected surprise that you discovered after purchase?

I had no way of knowing that 9.8 graded copies signed by Adam Hughes weren't what you were looking for. drchaos private msg quote post Address this user
The first book I submitted to CBCS was a raw Swamp Thing # 1 that I bought from ebay.

There was a signature inside the book.

I had to post a picture on the CGC forum with an inquiry to find out that it was signed by Bernie Wrightson.

CBCS got their first submission from me so I could have the signature verified.

I think Comic Connect sold it for me.

@drchaos-That's an awesome story. I know you're quite the seller and you probably see most artists signatures often, but I would have been hard pressed to sell a Bernie signed book.

a magazine that I bought as a 9.2 from Metropolis actually graded as a 9.4

must've been an oversight

Great find! I’ve discovered quite a few double cover books over the years. They are always a cool find! I have seen some books posted on this forum that were bound with more than 2 covers, which is something I have never seen in the wild. I have also scored numerous surprise signatures from comics in the 50 cent and dollar boxes including John Byrne, Dick Giordano and Paul Smith. Always adds a little spice to the treasure hunt that is discount box digging!

Very cool double cover!!

I actually have a good news example as well....I bought a New Gods #1 raw that came with an undisclosed Jack Kirby signature that passed verification.

I got to meet him at Baltimore Comic Con once.

I always thought Batman the Cult was really cool even the book never really took off.

I believe I got both Bernie and Starlin to sign a whole set.

I think all of my books signed by Bernie are long gone now.

The only signature series Swamp Thing I have left was signed by David Michelinie:

His is probably the one signature that I'd really love to have. I don't get many signatures but a verified Kirby-signed issue of Fantastic Four would be very cool.

I often read posts from life-long collectors who say they have never found double covers in the wild, and it always makes me wonder if my own experiences sound "too good to be true."

All these were post-purchase surprises. They include double covers, signatures, manufacturing defects, and Mark Jeweler's Inserts. I don't really care about MJI's especially, but I know many do.

DOUBLE COVERS (outer cover, then inner cover).

My first double cover- Purchased at a small alleyway comic shop in a local college town 36 years ago.

My 2nd double cover, purchased on the CGC sales forum. It was submitted by me, but I didn't want to take an image of the inner cover because I didn't want to risk damage. Naturally I was hoping for a 9.8, and might even get one if I resubmitted it today, but that involves sending it back to them, and HAHAHAHAHAHA no.
The seller sent me a message when he shipped it, stating I'll be pleasantly surprised when I get it as he missed something when presale grading. I simply thought I'd see bright pages but was thrilled when I saw a BEAUTIFUL inner cover.
A focused double cover collector on the CGC forums wants it, and was very open to a trade or sale, but I have NO idea how to value this as I've never seen another. If I ever decide to let it go, I promised to give him first shot if he still wants it and will deal with that dilemma when/if that time ever comes.

This low-mid grade Strange Tales I found at a small, no-longer-there comic shop on the Oregon Coast. I also discovered a book with an MJ Insert from the same purchase I'll post below.

The double cover on this book is loose because it's a square-bound, so I was able to take scans of both covers rather than photos. This one may have been the most thrilling to find. It's a MCS purchase graded and priced as a 7.5, and the only copy they had listed, so it wasn't sent by mistake. After I found it (by simply turning the cover page) I went back and zoomed in on their scan (included below). I didn't bother doing this when I bought it since it was all they had at the time. You can clearly see the 2nd cover peeking through at the bottom corner and top edge. I don't know if this means it wasn't properly graded inside and out, but in this particular case, I don't care.
I'd love to have it graded, but with the loose outer cover I fear SCS damaging the inner cover.

SIGNATURES/SKETCHES These two were purchased in Flying Donut's $3 sales many years ago. If you're familiar with these sales, you'll know they included cover scans only. At $3 each, you're just buying books as is, and sometimes that risk included books worth only $3, and sometimes buyers did happy dances. These two, purchased in separate sales, made me do happy dances (in my head).

MANUFACTURING ERROR This one is pretty cool (to me). I purchased it from a Half-Off box just before closing at a Eugene, Or. convention a few years ago. Giving it a quick look through later in my hotel room, I suddenly realized I was seeing pages I'd already glanced at, so looked closer. After what should have been the last page, an additional 16 pages (32 front and back) were bound to it. These were the 2nd half of the book. It would be amazing if I ever find another copy with an additional 16/32 pages of the first half of the book, assuming that's where they wound up. VERY slim odds on that happening, made slimmer because I don't buy anymore.

MARK JEWELERS INSERTS These low-mid grade books were purchased in an As Is bulk sale off eBay several years ago. I haven't bothered to scan the inserts yet.
The last book, Powerman #48, was discovered with the Strange Tales double cover posted above.

@Siggy - Holy crap! That's an awesome run of good luck. The only similar (not quite the same), was that I bought two books (separate purchases and seller) on ebay for cheap prices. One was Iron Man 118 with a John Byrne signature and a Hulk 340 with a Todd Mcfarlane signature. both were crap shoots but came back Verified from CBCS, so win for me! To me your luck is amazing. I've only had my one example that started this thread, so congrats!

I forgot about this one because I knew it was a double cover when I bought it, but just realized it counts because I'm still the one who discovered it when I was helping Mike Royer at SDCC 2019. A few days before we left for the show, he gave me first peek at the box of comics he was bringing from his collection. After I found it and made sure Mike was willing to let it go (he didn't care lol), I verified through CBCS, Steve Ricketts specifically if I recall, that the label would reflect the provenance as long as they witness it, and the info is on the form with their verification. After we set up his table on Preview Night, we walked to the CBCS booth

I was already submitting a Black Panther #1 from the same box but added this one hoping for a 9.2 after they pressed it. No such luck.

So anyway, it was still a surprise, just not after purchase.

Oooh! I just remembered another, I've posted this before, I think it qualifies for this thread. I was reading posts on the forum one day and someone mentioned that there was a variant to captain America 100. They said the yellow colored outline (that makes the title look 3D) was missing from the variant. I knew I had two of these in my collection (one was already graded), and lo and behold!

I discovered this before purchase, but it's one of my more regrettable sales. I paid only $50 for it at a MCS auction.

thats the thing when you buy a comic to soley to get graded, you dont look in it. could be a high valuable feature or defects you dont see. got three comics Im submitting in 2 months (or 4 havent decided on 4th) both were bagged and board when I got them. I havent taken them out (one was a gift during our gift exchange in dec, one was bought at a convention last year and one was given to me here as a gift when I first joined) for all I know there is a signature inside.

Very true! Most of my books I bought off the rack, so no surprises. But now that I've bought a bunch of books of Ebay and such, I should go through them.

Thanks- I do feel blessed. My Royer-signature collection is in the hundreds (comics, art, merchandise), and I've enjoyed every story about his time working for Jack Kirby (that's how he puts it- He didn't work for DC or Marvel. He worked for Jack), as well as his many other stories, but comics make up a very small part of our visits. His main interests are in classic films and westerns, and British mysteries/crime drama.

Assisting him at a few conventions I've been fortunate to be part of several conversations with the likes of Starlin, both Simonsons, Aragones, Wolfman, and Steranko (<seeing these two together is a blast)!

I doubt I'll be assisting at either of the annual San Diego conventions anymore. I drive him there so he's able to bring more stuff for his table, and that's a lo-o-o-o-ng drive. The trip to last year's SDCFest was rough on my body, and at 60 I'm finding that physical decline to be about as steady as a young person's growth. I can only imagine the toll it takes on Mike at 83.

Now this one was kind of a surprise, but only because I didn't thoroughly read the listing. Because of my friendship with Mike (we live a few miles apart), I seek any item I can find containing his work so he can sign it, and his career includes many different types of work. One item I found at MCS was a Russ Manning tribute with an interview with Mike, and thumbing through it I found a signature by Dave Stevens. I simply could not believe my supposed luck, but when I looked at the listing again, it did mention the sig. I just didn't bother reading it all because some of the things I find for this collection are very obscure, and if it's the only one available, I just take it.
