I like the OWL Whiteness grading system21610

Collector JB1 private msg quote post Address this user
Does anyone have verifiable links to the rationale behind why the OWL whiteness grading system has apparently lost favor? Seems to me it is a far less subjective aspect of a book's grade than numerically grading the overall condition of a book. You make a direct comparison between the color of your books' pages to the shades of brown that you see on the card. I assume OWL's disfavor may have had at least as much to do with copyright of the OWL system itself.

This begs another question: Why doesn't CBCS (and CGC and PGX, ...) publish exactly how they grade their books. Are there such specific detailed resources? Frankly, a couple of sentences describing each grade as provided by the grading houses is insufficient. I am unaware of such published info but I'm happy to be enlightened here. This would include what scale the different grading houses actually use in determining page quality (I'll bet it's OWL).

Well, to ask these questions is to answer them...of course it is unlikely that such info is published since the graders will claim it as their intellectual property. But don't worry, they have "experts" working for them. You can believe them!

Collectors pay good money for comic book grading, and we need transparency. I'm not sure we currently have any.

As a friend recently explained to me, white page color isn't the same in every era. Some eras had truly white paper and some didn't. The same applies to the other page quality designations. So the use of the OWL card would sometimes work, but it wouldn't always apply.

Every company will create and protect their grading practices and methods. If they made them public, anybody could copy them and start up their own grading company. There are guides that give you basic information, but you are not going to get the details.
Over time, you can become a decent grader and be fairly accurate compared to actual grading company grades.
I found this quick grading guide online. It might help you get an idea of what to look for. There are lots of other resources available.

Overstreet publishes a grading guide, cery comprehensive. It of course makes reference to the OWL chart or card, since it was their product.

Matt Nelson published a CGC Grading Guide, hundreds of pages, not easy to find, out of print. Maybe they realized that it provided too much info, possibly decreasing the need for professional grading, shooting themselves in the foot.

CGC isn't going to use the OWL system from a semi-competing company. They don't have the rights, and probably want to maintain their own version of standards.

Maybe someone knows if there is a CBCS Grading Guide out there somewhere. If I recall correctly, there is a general framework on the CBCS website.

I still want to know how a book with black pages (like 90s ghost rider /midnight sons/ spirits of vengeance) gets a White Pages designation.

It's worth noting that a particular industry hippie recommended the Overstreet Guide to me. Very detailed with examples, it's probably the best resource there is on the subject.

and there's like 3 editions?? all with detailed photos so if you have 2 or even all 3 you probably have photos on all the allowable flaws with a grade
1st edition way back when came with an OWL card (which I've lost over the decades!!)

You used to be able to order them from CGC, a page specifically for that. Now it's a dead end, and if you call they say they are reworking the page. But that has been the case for a long time now.

If you check the usual alternative places to buy one, no one seems to have them, or they're very expensive.

You can apparently order one or more here.

A while back, I just downloaded the photo of the card (page color side) and printed it, landscape, using half the page. The colors seemed to be accurate. I put an image of a numeric grading scale on the other side of the page. I slipped it into an 8.5x11 toploader. I keep it next to my desk for reference.

Not so good for portable use, though, like to take to a show. I guess you could make an extra copy and fold it up to fit in your pocket.
