The Banana Factory at CGC is Going Strong21596

Based on all of this, shouldn’t CBCS be doing more to take advantage of this situation? Sure, they had a funny banana-slab video a while back, but what about recently? I’d like to see them promoting their product at more conventions, putting out more videos and ads, pushing more sales with promotions, and highlighting significant sales of key books in CBCS cases.

Now is not the time to be quiet. Not with PSA hitting the ground running and already making its presence known in the market, in videos, and even on Go Collect already. Unless you want to be known as number 3 in the comic grading industry, you had better make some loud moves and make them now.

I think CBCS is content with being #3. Yes, now is not the time to sit back…but it wasn’t the time to sit back the other 5+ CGC scandals that have occurred the last few years…and all they did was put out a YouTube video maybe 1% of CGC base saw, and maybe a sale here or there.

So I expect more of the same…not taking advantage…content with sloppy thirds.

So here’s the problem with this. YouTubers may be calling attention to the issue, but they themselves admit they will keep submitting books because CGC slabs get more money. This automatic comics wants everyone else to rise up and fix the problem so it reduces the risk his 121 submissions he just sent in (read the comments) will come back unharmed and able to flip quickly.

If anything, calling out the problem then saying you’re going to keep submitting books is just validating to everyone that it’s ok to keep sending books to CGC without holding them accountable. That includes validating CGC’s position to them it’s not that serious!! Basically, if the intent is to inform problem there’s a serious issue, it actually does the very opposite. It’s not serious enough to stop and take a stand. Keep doing what y’all doing!

Yes, CGC should own the problem, but why would they if their customer base shows in their own actions they’re ok with it by sending more books in…if anything, the 50 book prescreen probably made them more business than they may have lost due to the bannna scandal. Look at the chart! Rates are going up!

And more and more 9.6s and 9.4a are being sent back with 9.8 labels because of the bends.

I’d like these YouTubers to put their money where their mouth is, and lead by example (stop sending them books!) instead of continuing to enable it.

Not to get political..and I know global submissions have to be a small % of submissions (has to be under 20%?)
BUT...I for one have stopped submissions and am worried about what type of extra$$ I may incur on purchases from US auction houses so I've largely stopped buying...some of that has to be in that graph showing a down turn in average submissions?

edit: stopped submissions as I'm uncertain how they will be treated on return i.e. I know it's my own book being returned...but do I or does the grading service need to provide 'documentation' to 'prove' that?? idk....easier to just not bother....

Bottom line is, as long as customer behaviors remain largely unchanged, there is no reason for CGC to change. They certainly are not going to change their holders because its the right thing to do. They respond to one thing and one thing only, revenue. If the cost of the change in holders outweighs the lost revenues, they will never change. They are 100% about money, nothing else.

I have spent about the same this year on comic related items as last year, but that money was almost all spent on Original Art and Omnibus books. That decision was very much caused by CGCs banana bend. Probably anecdotal, but I can’t be alone.

I still struggle to find many CBCS slabs for sale on most auction sites and EBay. I do have a sketch cover I am waiting on from CBCS though. That will be my first CBCS slab. Looking forward to getting it.

@Danimal1112 let us know how you like your new slab.

Most collectors keep their CBCS slabs for their collection. Flippers push CGC hard and sale them to people who don’t really know the truth about their slabs.

Yeah. That makes it tough for me. I don’t like to submit myself. The sketch cover I am waiting on I opted for ART label versus grading. A grade doesn’t matter to me for something like that. I just want the sketch witnessed. It’s not like the grader is grading the sketch a 9.8.

I learned through banana gate that I just prefer to buy the ones I want versus submitting and rolling the dice.

I joined the CGC forums back in '14. These boards a year or so later. I do not do social media at all, nothing. If not for these boards, there is 0% chance that I'd know about BG. I suspect that's true for the VAST majority of comic collectors. And I also suspect that's part of the reason why CGC wipes anything to do with BG from their boards.

PSA has so far not been known for bananas, but they have already had some issues - like not knowing the names of famous artists and writers for some comics they have slabbed (and putting “unknown” instead on their labels). But I guess checking their competition, for anything, never crossed their minds. So when someone submitted a low-grade copy of Superman #1 for grading, they didn’t bother to see if it had previously been graded by CGC or CBCS. Bad move.

PSA = PGX 10 years ago in terms of finding restoration. Is that the verdict?

With all the experience Mark Wilson has with trimming, you'd think he could spot it a mile away.

In a related story, I have a Flash 105 that just may indeed be headed to PSA for grading.

I understand there will always be (what should be) a small amount of errors by any professionals.
But c'mon - a Superman #1 that is not highly scrutinized several times over?
This is not a copy of Bill & Ted's Bogus Adventures that someone used a black sharpie on a $5 book that was missed.

Sheesh - Just unreal and not a good look

How do you know they didn’t check? Did you ask them? How do we know CGC didn’t get it wrong? They’ve messed up trimming before, and this a difficult book to nail down as Ryan mentioned.

We need this book graded by CBCS…a 3rd party 3rd party grader…to break the tie!

BTW, start watching at 9:40 of the video below. CBCS Trimmed comes back not trimmed by CGC…2 out of 3 books…🤔

I wonder how many hobbyists have to continue taking one for the team before CGC begins listening to the customer base that actually has a noggin.

I’m not sure they know they’re taking one for the team…if anything, the ones who would make the biggest impact and stop submitting books continue to send books in to be damaged….as long as they get the label they want, it’s all good. Book could be a 1.0 but if the label says 9.8, it’s fine by them.
