I had no idea comic book grading was on the same level as professional wrestling. The behind the scenes drama trumps what you see in the ring or receive in a slab.

Has it gotten to the point where bananslabs are causing the entire slab market to decline at a faster rate? I know economic uncertainty is a primary reason but I'd like to have the option of rationally lashing out at some CGC dealers if they in fact, are bringing more problems upon the slabbing industry by continuing to do business with CGC.

@DrWatson at least youtubers aren't afraid to get sued and are calling them out. So this is a separate issue from the accordion/wavy looking comics?

It certainly appears that the comic book people are not calling the shots at CGC. It appears the CGC has been directed by Blackstone to massively reduce cost and by extension, quality, with no care whatsoever to CGC's reputation. It appears clear that Blackstone intends on driving CGC into the ground until there is nothing left. What we are seeing here is a slow, painful death of a company that used to command respect in the market. |

No matter how many screw-ups they make, it’s never seems to be enough. When will we finally reach:![]() PS - PSA must be extremely happy about the timing of this one! PSS - Which means it should also be time for CBCS to have a bulge-a-thon sale! |

I'm not sure Blackstone is intentionally running them into the ground All the other CCG products including CGC cards seem to be doing just fine. I don't follow any of those other groups, coins, cards, etc. but I would think I would've heard something negative other than grading fake pokemon cards.

It's possible but the casual comic collectors or comic collectors that don't frequent these forums (CBCS and/or CGC) are unlikely to even know these problems exist....its possible the other hobbies are similar....if you're not knee deep in the know....maybe you don't know at all. But I could be wrong as well.

There are too many, big time screw ups at CGC that can't be directly intentional...it has to be an indirect result of using cheaper and cheaper materials and/or processes.

In my opinion, things really started going off the rails with swap-gate. When videos showed how easily their cases could be opened and books could be swapped, they panicked. They said they would make changes to their slabs to make them more tamper proof, so they hastily made changes without proper testing, and banana-gate was the result. Addition fiddling with the cases (again without proper testing, apparently) to improve bending has now resulted in accordion-gate and bulge-gate. At no time did they stop slabbing books after these problems were brought to their attention. The show must go on, it seems, at any cost (to the customer).

If you have an actual or perceived superior product/service you do not jeopardize the quality. If a legitimate change is jeopardizing quality and adding expense (as in mech error, damages, poor service) then make an immediate correction to save face and recover those initial losses later. You do not continue to saturate your own market to the potential point of no return like CGC is doing. If your doctor keeps telling you nothing is wrong with and you know their is obvious problem because you repeatedly visit for the same symptoms; are you going to continue to see that doctor? You shouldn’t and you should raise hell over it. CGC should be returning happy and healthy books, but continue to say everything is fine. I digress; no one cares enough. |

CGC can do whatever they want....they can drive their once stellar reputation into the ground...turn quality down to zero....gaslight their customers about all of it and their clients will ALWAYS comeback because of one simple reason.....real or perceived....and perception is reality anyway....as long as CGC books sell for more,...most people will never leave them....ever. |

With all the other crap, didn't they (CGC) say something like "we're working on it"? But with this banana thing (which has been happening for way too long), they haven't said anything other than that there's no damage being done.![]() |

Quote:Originally Posted by Gaard It's because they are trapped. CGC doesn't have a clue why it is happening. If they admit that it's a known problem, that opens the floodgates. Several years of past submissions come into question. They don't want to regrade and recase hundreds of thousands of possible banana slabs. And ship them both ways. And take responsibility for any damage created by the CGC banana capsule, with monetary compensation exposure. Then there is the damage to their reputation. They are damaging treasured collectibles instead of providing enhanced protection. A PR nightmare. And admitting the problem exists would choke CGC submissions from that point on, until they could prove to industry experts that they had solved it. So their strategy is to ignore it, no problem here. It's likely that 95% or more of the general slab collecting community is unaware of the CGC banana problem. It's a very subtle thing, not like prominent Newton Rings (which they also said were ok). Someone has to show you how to tell that the capsule is curving. Then once you see it, it's obvious. So maybe they are working on it, might cure it at some point, but will never announce that. Because it would be admitting that there was a problem. And if announcing a fix, it becomes logical that they must have been aware of it at an earlier date to know to fix it. But kept it hidden. For those keeping score, I recently saw a submission come back to a dealer, all 13 with the banana effect to varying degrees. For this particular group, it may be of a lesser consequence, because they were not 9.8 material, all 8.0-9.0 Bronze and Copper, averaging $100 each, maybe less. Harder to attribute banana defects among natural defects. Not to excuse this poor result, but there's damage, as opposed to mortal damage, No damage would be ideal, and what was paid for. |

I've been in big business (healthcare industry) delivering products that help save peoples lives. We've had our share of shenanigans over the course of 35+ years. They (like my company) often won't admit to a problem publicly. We didn't sometimes even in an industry where lives were at stake. But what we did do is always make "improvements" to the design of our products, such that the reported problems were ultimately resolved in time. This approach lessens liability and demonstrated to regulatory agencies that we are working to our customer complaints. That's the part that pisses me off here. They are not working to "improve upon customer complaints". I don't expect them to admit to anything publicly as some have mentioned for liability; but I do expect them to address customer complaints. And they aren't going on AT LEAST 2+ years of damaging books. This is where I hold them responsible and am angry over. Not that they don't publicly admit it, but that they don't "improve" the design or the process causing the damages. |

..... lastly. And I can't remember where I got this chart from a few months ago. And I can't attest to it's accuracy. But if its accurate, this is not good for them (thru March '25). There may be several factors like downturn in this entire hobby. But I'm quite sure the CGC scandals have contributed below. The numbers say people are walking away from CGC submissions for some reason(s). ![]() |

Based on all of this, shouldn’t CBCS be doing more to take advantage of this situation? Sure, they had a funny banana-slab video a while back, but what about recently? I’d like to see them promoting their product at more conventions, putting out more videos and ads, pushing more sales with promotions, and highlighting significant sales of key books in CBCS cases. Now is not the time to be quiet. Not with PSA hitting the ground running and already making its presence known in the market, in videos, and even on Go Collect already. Unless you want to be known as number 3 in the comic grading industry, you had better make some loud moves and make them now. |

So I expect more of the same…not taking advantage…content with sloppy thirds. |

Quote:Originally Posted by flanders So here’s the problem with this. YouTubers may be calling attention to the issue, but they themselves admit they will keep submitting books because CGC slabs get more money. This automatic comics wants everyone else to rise up and fix the problem so it reduces the risk his 121 submissions he just sent in (read the comments) will come back unharmed and able to flip quickly. If anything, calling out the problem then saying you’re going to keep submitting books is just validating to everyone that it’s ok to keep sending books to CGC without holding them accountable. That includes validating CGC’s position to them it’s not that serious!! Basically, if the intent is to inform problem there’s a serious issue, it actually does the very opposite. It’s not serious enough to stop and take a stand. Keep doing what y’all doing! Yes, CGC should own the problem, but why would they if their customer base shows in their own actions they’re ok with it by sending more books in…if anything, the 50 book prescreen probably made them more business than they may have lost due to the bannna scandal. Look at the chart! Rates are going up! And more and more 9.6s and 9.4a are being sent back with 9.8 labels because of the bends. I’d like these YouTubers to put their money where their mouth is, and lead by example (stop sending them books!) instead of continuing to enable it. |

Not to get political..and I know global submissions have to be a small % of submissions (has to be under 20%?) BUT...I for one have stopped submissions and am worried about what type of extra$$ I may incur on purchases from US auction houses so I've largely stopped buying...some of that has to be in that graph showing a down turn in average submissions? edit: stopped submissions as I'm uncertain how they will be treated on return i.e. I know it's my own book being returned...but do I or does the grading service need to provide 'documentation' to 'prove' that?? idk....easier to just not bother.... |
