I'm a little curious as to why you sent it back to CGC as well. If it was in a banana hammock slab, pressed and put back into another banana hammock slab, why not just keep it in the CBCS slab or at least press and regrade with CBCS or whomever else doesn't have a consistent track record for damaging other people's property? Was it to maintain the pedigree stuff or consistency within your collection? I feel for you on that because it sucks to have your stuff throttled.

Just imagine, as collectors, the fear/panic/sense of dread/ upon seeing a book of ours stored in a box that had a backing board bent this banana bad. And the resultant impact upon the comic within that bag.

We'd lose our sh*t, pull the comic out, rebag, re-press, re-this, re-that, look it over a million times if the tics were significant. It would be unbearable. We'd need therapy.

And yet - here are collectors with the same situation, but it says (example) 9.8 so they're ok with it. It blows my mind that it's just not mass exodus and complaints more than their C.S. can manage.

Quite frankly, I sent it back hoping for the 9.6. The difference in how the tanning was treated was a deciding factor. CBCS called it acid transfer and the cgc treated it as light tanning. And again the drop from a 9.6 to a 9.0 also heavily influenced my decision. I could have handled a CBCS 9.4, but not a 9.0.

The entire situation has made me wonder if I should stop collecting altogether. It's created quite the internal conflict as I know sending it back to the cgc was wrong. I had the faintest measure of hope that it wouldn't come back bent. That got extinguished.

It's kind of like crying after touching the stove eye even though you were already told not to do it because it's hot. Like I said, it's my own fault. I cracked under pressure and did something countercurrent to my own ideals. I should have left well enough alone.

It makes me realize how lucky I got with my Northland copy of X-Men 22.

@DrWatson I know you love comic books. You probably have been collecting on and off since you were a kid. Sometimes you just need to enjoy and let go. Don't let a grading company take away your joy for the hobby. You know what a mint or near mint book looks like probably better than the grader. Being a subjective thing. I would personally rather have a 9.6 than an over graded 9.0. Thousands of dollars difference there

if cgc told me they would grade my comics, authenticate my sigs, press, (the works) for a really good price...Id probably still say no.

I found out a local mini con is coming in August. according to the site, cbcs will be there. so will bring my newly acquired Batman #428 and Star Wars #1 to submit (would more but spent a lot at heroes con)

Just today, I got an email from CGC for feedback.

Anyone wanna guess what I brought up as completely unacceptable?
I bet 100 of 100 get this one right

Maybe a good presser could get that kink out. White on white spine tics are much harder to detect. It might then pass as 9.8-ish.

Do you have a link to the listing? I'm curious if it has to be heavily discounted below FMV to sell. One way to quantify the value lost to the "Banana Effect". Or to see if there is any drop at all, if all the buyer looked at was the grade. But I don't know how you would not see that bend, nor how you could ignore it.

@chester15 It is not a first printing -- but rather, a 2024 facsimile edition. That is why it is priced how it is. I'd rather not link that seller's eBay listing, but search "Venom 3 facsimile edition cgc 9.8 -foil" on eBay should make it easy to locate. There are three foil variants of this facsimile edition that were Unknown Comics and/or NYCC exclusives. This is not one of those.

This is the kind of crap that turns people off to the hobby. Everyone on this forum knows this is going on but the average person may not realize there is a problem. There are 9.8s floating around with this problem and buyers are being taken advantage of. CGC knows better and should be ashamed. For God's sake have some pride in your product and fix that crap.

I just got a reminder from CGC to check out their booth at Galaxy Con in New Orleans. Maybe a group of people dressed in banana costumes could park themselves in front of that booth. Preferably holding banana slabs to show them the problem in person. Really horrible examples, if possible.

Since CGC seems tight with Bad Idea comics, I can't wait to see Bad Idea's new banana themed book in a banana slab. Hopefully signature series. The cross brand promotion from two of the worst companies would write itself.
