CBCS Damaged Signed Comic, But Not Really21553

Collector Frampton5150 private msg quote post Address this user
Not sure what to do in this situation, but I sent CBCS a signed comic to get verified and when it was sent back it had this weird line over the signature. The line wasn’t there when I sent it and I have photos to prove it. It almost looked like a defect in the slab, but I couldn’t be sure without opening it. I contacted CBCS and they promptly got back to me with a response and I shipped it back for free to get another holder also for free. When the comic came back it still had the line over the signature so the only explanation was it was damaged by CBCS. I reached out to them again asking for a refund because they not only ruined the comic, but also the experience of getting it signed. The refund was not for the grade which I was fine with. I got a canned response saying they would get back to me then I heard nothing. This was weeks ago. I sent two more emails over a week apart and still heard nothing. Has anyone else experienced this? I will certainly not be using a company that ruins collectibles instead of preserving them. Any suggestions on how this could be rectified?

Edit: I didn't read everything you wrote before I posted. What did you insure it for and what's the fmv/expected grade without the damage?

Looks like it got keyed.

Does the slab appear to be cracked? Maybe they had a mixup and sent the book back to you without reslabbing it.

Easiest solution is to either PM @Cody_Lockwood or @Wade_Story. This has become the generic answer for anyone having a problem because it actually works.

@Frampton5150 This is a weird one. Do you happen to have pictures of both slabs? A picture of the first slab and 2nd slab that CBCS returned?

Can you tell if that scratch is on the inner well or the book?

If the label was correct, I believe a re-holder can sometimes be just the outer shell that's replaced.

Give the slab a squeeze on the scratch and see if it moves a little...if it moves it's on the slab or inner well. If no movement at all it's likely on the book.

I have also had this experience. Send in a Spider-Man 2099 #1 (CGC 9.8 qualified in case). It came back a CBCS 9.2. Had damage on the corner either from removing it from the CGC case or got dropped. I didn't follow up with it as it took forever to come back from CBCS, definitely more than a year. (it was during the covid times). By the time the book came back the value was not where it was when I sent it out. That's the market though, wapp wapp waaaaaapp . Took the hit and learned that there are always complications that may come up so be prepared for that. Doubt I will do that again honestly. The other books didn't have damage so its a crap shoot I suppose.

@Grzegorzgrd hopefully they were more careful with my CGC qualified slab. Nothing to worry about at the moment, we'll see what happens when I get it back.

That would be real shame if the book was damaged , but it almost looks like something is laying on top of the book and I hope that is the case. If not hope you get a resolution you are happy with.

No vibrance, increased definition, reduced highlights, increased shadow with high exposure that line is super bright and seams to have its own shadow. The same with low exposure the other color breaks disappear and that line is still shining.

Show the full slab. What's the grade? If that's a scratch on the book it would lower the grade and be noted in the grader's notes.

First of all thank you for the overwhelming response and welcoming to the forum. I wish it was under better circumstances. I have used CBCS many times and I never had a problem and would recommend them without hesitation until this experience.

Hulksmash thank you for taking the time with the images. The shadow is telling. Maybe it suggests it is a defect in the slab. It looks like a scratch on the outside. Yeah like it got keyed, but it is smooth on the outside. Someone suggested they may have not replaced the slab and that is entirely possible. Attached it the second slab which has the some mark as the first pic I put on the original post.

Notes:
signature(s) verified by BAS
few small bends/creases to cover, couple small goes through center book, barely breaks color front cover

This leads me to believe that scratch is on the inner well....not the book.

Between the 2 images that line has moved further out on left end. It is definitely in the slab or trapped in the inner well with the book and not damage to the book

100% almost like a shaving of slab that is likely being held in place through static charge or pressed up between the inner well and slab
