For anyone selling secondary market goods from Canada to the US (Ebay, etc) this will be painful. Note one of the biggest changes is the de minimis exception has been lifted, so even items under $800 get dinged.

I don't see an increase of $1, from $4 to $5 as skyrocketing. That said, I don't buy new books any way. I thought they were already $4.99 a floppy.

It's obvious the spin that the article is attempting to create. Good news doesn't generate clicks.

It's like the Roach Motel for comic collectors. chester15 private msg quote post Address this user
The wholesale cost to a major distributor of a $5 retail comic is about $2. If that goes up by 25% because it crossed the border, then 50 cents gets added.

It could be presumed that the end price should also go up by 50 cents, but we know each entity passing the comic along will want to pile on, grab something for themselves. Greed is universal.

I don't think you'll see the price hit that fast. The FOC is 90 days so the shops shouldn't see it until the next FOC.

Of course that doesn't mean unscrupulous sellers won't raise the price early.

Does anyone know if this will affect people sending comics to CBCS for grading, as in will I be paying anything extra when my comics cross the border either way?

The printing process is cheaper in Canada, but weren't comics printed in the USA for decades? How difficult is it to find a printer to make them here? You get some paisans in NY, NJ, Buffalo, Cleveland, or Chicago to control the printing unions and boom, you should be able to keep it cheap. New books are already expensive enough to quit the hobby.

@Studley_Dudley I think you'll find that most comics have been printed in Canada for decades. I looked at a Batman from 1994 that said "Printed in Canada" in the indicia.

The problem with the US printing them is the cost and logistics of starting to print them here. The Canadians have the timber and printing presses already and even a 25% increase wouldn't make it cost effective enough to move to the US. Imagine what it would cost US print companies to suddenly have to print millions of comics every month. They don't have the equipment or the people to handle what the big three produce every month. Between Absolute Batman and Ultimate Spider-Man they printed almost one million copies. I doubt any US printing company could handle that many by themselves.

I'll add this, I'm committed to supporting local vendors here in the US in all areas as much as possible.

I printed 25 promotional copies of my upcoming book "The Reckoning" and it cost me $215. That is $8.60 per 28 page book in color. I'm charging $10 per issue, so my margin is extremely small. There's builk order pricing of up to %60 off orders over 500 or 1000(cant check atm).

So yeah Marvel, DC and others will cut costs outsourcing to other countries cause it makes financial sense

Ok, so since at least the 90s. Thank you for that. I couldn't think of how far back it started and I was also told of times where some books would be printed in Canada. I guess when I think of outsourcing, I don't think of Canada. I don't understand the costs of the paper though. At least with Marvel, it is quite possibly some of the shittiest paper stock I've seen. Always warped, tears easy and tons of color rub/lift. Maybe the printing technique is less intensive than in the past, but damn, some of the shit coming off the presses is just that. Shit. Other publishers have better stock with comparable end-user prices.

Will companies closer to the border just do the ol' drive across and mail things technique as opposed to dealing with taxation?

The labor's not as cheap but they do also print in Ohio and PA.
Hopefully now they will print more in Ohio and PA.

If they want cheap labor, I'm sure Marvel could outsource to Nike who would have those kids in Vietnam and Pakistan do it for $0.03/month.

Well, yeah... if child labor were okay, Marvel's owner is already very familiar with it. But that's for another forum.

I mostly buy comics digitally. they don't take up physical space. I only buy physical when a reason, or at conventions. I think in last 5 months the only physical comics I got were gifts here
