No UK specific ad in Sgt. Fury #112, which arrived today - it has the same ASM #122 ad as Kull.

Three more are on the way...

A whizzy graphic table will follow (of course)...

I’ve always heard/read that UK/pence variants were printed at the same time as the US versions and had no distinguishing characteristics other than the printing plate change that had the price. Now that information seems a bit suspect. Could it be that’s how they started out in the early 60s and gradually began to change the ads in the 70s? I absolutely love quirky (for lack of a better word) differences in comics that are supposedly “the same issue.” 30c/35c covers, Mark Jewelers, National Diamond, UK/pence, UPC differences (or the lack thereof), and diamond corner boxes, just to name a few. Even the Mennon/Alka Seltzer inserts or printing errors can be fun versions to luck upon. To me, THESE are the true description of what the word “variant” means. It seems like the term “version” would be more descriptive of a book printed intentionally with several completely different covers. But I digress. Right here, right now, I’m really curious about 60s UK/pence comics having subtle or blatant differences in their interiors. The few I have are slabbed. So I can’t check for myself.

Hello Jason. So far, that Daredevil #101 is the only copy I've found with a unique, UK specific variant ad. Others are looking too - I didn't make the discovery - and they may be ahead of me but I will personally be checking every copy dated July 1973 as a starting point before extending further out.

That copy aside, I've posted more about UK Price Variants than anyone alive, having established which publishers produced them (seven) and the issue ranges for each. You'll find all that research here, along with every other thing there is to know about them, physically:

https://boards.cgccomics.com/blogs/blog/628-john-morlars-pence-palace-of-doom-and-other-comic-miscellany/

You'll also see how I personally define a 'variant' in the Summary entry, and I've gone to great lengths over the years to establish the difference between a book that comes from the original print run and everything subsequent (which is a reprint or repackaged product by definition). CGC, incidentally, announced their switch from UK Edition to UK Price Variant in my pence thread on their site.

You might also be interested to read this article I wrote for the 'Rare Comics' blog which summarises the Marvel UKPV information (minus the recent Daredevil ad find of course):

https://rarecomics.wordpress.com/2023/11/06/marvel-uk-price-variants-my-part-in-their-downfall/

When I was a Spider-Man completist, back in the day, I had everything towards the end - pence, Canadian, Australian, MJI, NDS, Direct / Newsstand, Mennon, Bubblicious, Pizzazz etc etc. Those were fun days.

Anyway, you seem a man after my own heart, so I hope you find something in all that to enjoy. Like you, I've always been excited by anything that's out of the ordinary. I love a printing error too - here's one of my favourites, along with some gifs I made:

All good fun

I'm at work so I can't really research it now so if a kindly Canadian has more insight or if Doug Sulipa monitors the boards, that person can chime in.

Example of a Crappy Grading Company slab.

I have never seriously collected pence variants (although I do keep an eye out for pence stamped DC war books). I have a small selection of UK comics, the vast majority of which are 2000AD. It's nice to see information like this on this board, versus the other one.

You're welcome Jayson

I found a second July 1973 cover dated Marvel with the UK specific variant ad - the 6p UKPV copy of Fantastic Four #136:

Here's a draft summary table, showing the two confirmed books and those that I've confirmed don't have the variant ad:

I'll keep going until I've seen inside them all.

I checked inside ASM #122 just out of curiosity - that book doesn't have a UKPV - and the ads are all US as expected. Stranger things have happened, and it would be funny if one of the non-UKPV bearing July 73 books had the UK ad in them!

I don't have a TOD #10, and would rather not pay current prices to see what ads are inside. Youtube has a cents copy:

An appropriate ad, given the title. Now to find the 6p version!

Morning

Regarding the July 1973 UK ads, I've had confirmation from two separate owners of TOD#10 that their 6p pence copies do not contain the UK specific advert for MWOM and SCW. I've asked two more owners, so four confirmations will do it for me, if they come in. I like to confirm for myself, as a rule, but can't expect people with comics worth that much to start scanning and photographing their contents.

I have all the remaining UKPV books on their way to me and will complete the table below fully once they're all in.

I also spent some time looking at the July 1973 books for which no UKPV exists, to see if by accident or otherwise a UK ad might be in them. I've confirmed that 21 out of the 24 don't, as expected. Good to check though as mistakes happen.

Once that's all done, and we have the complete July 73 picture, I'll start looking in and around that date to see if it was more than a one month thing.

All good fun.

....a visit from Pat brings a 6p Conan #28 with no UK ad and a 6p Incredible Hulk #165 with one. Hooray!

So that's three books confirmed to have it so far out of the 16 UKPVs, and six without.

Is it coincidence that the three confirmed books are in alphabetical order I wonder....?

We shall see.

It's coming up to seven years since I first posted a picture of Just Married #28 online and commenced the journey of trying to establish what UK Price Variants exist for Charlton and to then try to collect them all.

I'm up to over 600 now of the 834 that could theoretically exist, and I absolutely love them. That search and research extended to the distribution of Charlton in the UK and I have enough information now to write a book on them. Trouble is, no one would read it!

I'm still going to do it though, one day....

Afternoon

This is going to be my last post for a while - things to do - so hopefully the thread will still be here when I get back. I think they get locked after a bit, as I recall?

Anyway, Captain Marvel #27 and Werewolf by Night #7 do not have the UK ad in them so unless the last remaining July 1973 UKPV that I'm waiting on does, it will be four UK variant ads among the 16 UKPVs for that cover month. I'll be extending into August and beyond, to see if there is anything else of a variant nature to find, so hopefully will have something to report on that when I get back.

The seller sent me a tatty WBN7, not the one I ordered, so here's just the Captain Marvel and the updated summary table. I need to do a bit of work on it, as the CM has a new ad, not currently showing. The WBN, incidentally, has ads US3 and US5, both of which are for the Zombie magazine.

Be seeing you!
