Pretty sure the Thing and my wife aren't the same height. PhilCoulson private msg quote post Address this user
Since the bananagate scandal and unsatisfactory solution by CGC, I will not purchase anything that has been graded by them in the past year or so. Therefore, when I look at the weekly Heritage Auction listings I always glance at the cert # and immediately pass on those with newer certs #s. I have noticed a trend on HA where almost all the key comics I look at are recently graded.

For example, here is a list of all the ASM key comics in this weeks' auction. A total of 20 key comics and 19 of them have a cert # starting with 44 or 45. Does that seem odd to you? I'm interested in hearing what the boardies think about why and/or how this is.

I should also probably say that this doesn't apply to just key comics on HA, it applies to 90% of all slabbed comics on HA that I've seen.

@PhilCoulson - I have seen lots of cert numbers beginning with 44 or 45 in many auctions recently, including HA and MCS.

Perhaps they are books submitted by Heritage. Not owned by Heritage, but submitted by them on behalf of the sellers. Or resubmitted for a potential grade bump.

I had a number of books slabbed with CGC in the last couple of years starting with 43 44 and 45.. I dont have any of them having this bananagate issue. So I dont get your point..

BTW.. I took a quick glance at HA (as the auction is now going on) and most of those books sold are low to mid grade books...

maybe the person is just selling his collection.

I wonder if folks have submitted these recently graded books in hopes of getting a 9.9.

I think when people decide to sell their books, they get them graded. I was watching 5 or 6 books in the recent MCS Prime auction but cut it back to 2 when I saw that most were recent CGC slabs.

I'm not sure if your extremely lucky, naive, or being purposefully obtuse.

@DoorCntyComicColl

Last year I purchased 2 different 9.8 slabs at auction, one from Comiclink and one from MCS, and both were banana'd badly. At that time I had barely heard some of the news about the issue and thought it was one of those things that would not affect me. But 2 for 2 was all it took for me. To their credit, both companied allowed me to return for full credit as each comic has significant ticks/bends for a 9.8. In any case, that is my point.

Regarding the auction at HA, I'm sure there are times that someone sells a low-grade collection but it still strikes me as odd when I see this week after week.

I suspect this is the most likely explanation. Books sent raw to Heritage who then submits to CGC on behalf of the seller. Or CPR. Or, thinking more cynically, straight resubmissions by Heritage with the expectation that their relationship with CGC will result in higher grades than the books were previously graded at.

I think the point was simply that so many books being sold at HA auction were slabbed very recently. Not necessarily a nefarious thing, but certainly an interesting observation. If the MCS Prime auction were running this week we could do a sampling check and see if the pattern holds up there as well. I doubt it would.

Yes. Though there are other eras impacted it appears Golden Age is mostly immune and Silver Age are hit or miss (but largely fine). Also, once people start looking closely they will find angled books (not bent from extreme to extreme but sitting diagonally in the case) going back several years, certainly to serial numbers starting with 37x or lower.

I believe it's two fold....it could very well be re-subs in an attempt for higher grades but I also believe that people are dumping their bananagate slabs. It's not only on HA where you're seeing high volume CGC 43 and 44 certs #....MCS has it as well and I've noticed they're priced lower than FMV some if the time. I think the word is out on these defective slabs and people are dumping them.

A lot of the books are Modern, which includes Bronze, Copper, and Modern books, because the bulk of what the cgc grades are Modern books, especially with the signature series books.

However, banangate also affects Vintage books. Any one who tries to tell you otherwise is more than likely trying to convince themselves it's a fact or trying to protect their own investment.

The moral of the story is don't buy anything graded by the cgc where the serial number begins with 43, 44, 45, or newer. Be suspect of the 42s. Make sure the seller has a return policy or better yet, buy CBCS.

Be wary of sellers or investors who claim there isn't an issue and the slabs have always been that way. They haven't.

Agreed....I don't collect Modern books and I've been surprised when I found SA, BA, CA books in my collection with the banana curve...mostly 43 certs #'s with some 44"s because I became aware of bananagate in the 44#'s.
