Does anyone have any information on Red Star Playboy magazines? They are (from what info I have found)supposed to be variant reprints. There are some copies that may have multiple stars which may indicate the region where they were distributed. Can anyone verify this? I recently acquired a v5 #8 and #9 that have multiple stars. Very confusing! Any help would be nice.

The stars near (or in) the P of Playboy indicated the reginal advertising inside of the book. It was an easy way to prevent books meant for a particular area from being distributed to the wrong zone.

@SteveRicketts So I’m guessing that makes then more desirable, rarer and more valuable? I’ll post pictures tomorrow just for fun. Thanks Steve!

I wonder if there is a "star legend" somewhere... this number of stars means this country, something like that? I can't find one but I didn't look much.

So many questions. Are there magazines with more stars than 3 and if so, how many? How many years did this go on, what was the last issue with the stars?

I read this on a Heritage auction, Issue 1 had stars on the 3rd page...
"Playboy #1 Red Star Copy (HMH Publishing, 1953) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages. The Red Star Copy variation is by far the rarest of Playboy's premiere issue. To date CGC has certified over 350 copies of the common printing, 90 of the Page 3 Copy printing, but just 28 of the Red Star Copy variant. To be sure, there are very few higher-graded copies among any of the variations, but we've only offered a Red Star Copy of the issue on a handful of occasions over 20 years, much less one in this high of a grade. The red star on the cover aside, the big deal here is the historic Marilyn Monroe cover and her groundbreaking nude poster inside, the forerunner of the famous Playmate of the Month gatefold."

Interesting, I was told the # of stars represented the # of times the girl on the cover, has been on a Playboy cover.

@SteveRicketts Question for you, are Playboy issues that have the stars that are NOT red, are they still considered "Red Star" editions?
~Thanks!

Playboy #1 is the only issue that anyone acknowledges as a "red star variant". Beyond that issue, most everything else has various combinations of stars/no stars. On some of those issues the star (or stars) are red. On other issues the star (or stars) are black. I don't think I've ever seen a copy with a star that was a different color besides red or black. Maybe a silver?

Some copies of a particular issue have zero stars. Other copies of the same issue can have one or multiple stars. I have a few books with up to 11 or 12 stars. I can't remember off the top of my head the most I've ever seen.

These "red stars" are only in the first year of production. I don't know what they signify, though there are several theories. Are they a second printing? Complimentary copies? I don't know if anyone really knows for sure.

Later on, the stars identified regional advertising variations. They needed a way to identify the regions when being produced at the factory and the stars were probably an idea by someone involved in the first year of production and it just carried over.

To my knowledge, nobody involved in the production of the early years of the magazine has ever spilled the beans on what the red stars actually mean. All we can do is speculate, and probably wrongly.
