just an organizational restructure
Sounds like all three were operating on their own and now a 4th entity will help collaborate or 'strategize' things where they can

My guess, and it is only a guess, is that this reorg is driven by a) the legal issues of the top guy from the prior holdco combined with b) financial difficulties at one or more of the individual companies.

I won’t go into more details (since all speculative).

Someone mentioned going public above. Not happening imnsho.

If they're smart...they'll leave it alone as CBCS. If a change must happen then make it the least impacting by adding just the initial B like B*CBCS.

But...I don't really care either way.

I can see it now, after many meetings and discussions there will be a re-branding and all slabs will proudly declare:
CBCS is now BS (Beckett Services)!

I found it interesting that when they started doing Manga, they used the Beckett logo. I think that if they change the CBCS branding it will be the Beckett logo. They also offer a limited custom label on the Manga books.

10+ years in, would be a mistake to rebrand. 'Beckett' is already prominently displayed on reverse side of the label.

All these You Tube talking heads will not give CBCS a chance no matter what they do. They will keep moving the goal post (if only they change their labels, if only they had a census, if only they took advantage of a CGC misstep) etc

CBCS and it's supporters must drown this stuff out and carry on with sensible and necessary adjustments (CBCS NEEDS a 'Matt Nelson' figure out in front doing the You Tube and con circuit and IG shorts on grading, pedigree, population data, etc

I find it strange that some of the strongest arguments that people site as reasons CBCS will not catch up to CGC (too many CGC slabs out in the market compared to CBCS, Registry, resale value, too many years of a headstart) they bring up none of this when touting the impending entrance of PSA.

I've got a prediction (and I could be wrong). If CGC's most loyal and vocal supporters look past all that plagued CGC last year and would never give a 10 year player in the game a chance with an arguably 'more secure' slab, THey are not going to start cracking out their CGC books and submit to PSA, nor will they choose PSA over CGC. They will wait until CGC 'gets it's act together and carry on. In short: CGC will mop the floor with PSA when all is said and done.

I just wish they would stop with the CBCS bashing and let those of us who choose to use both companies like me, and those who choose to CBCS (or CGC) exclusively do so and stop downing CBCS. Why are they so anxious for CBCS to fail it seems sometimes?

Food for thought.

I think leaving current senior management in place is a smart decision. Nobody asked me, but if I were the new organization, I might try and leverage the positive reputation of some of my brands to boost the others. BCS graded cards should have Dragon Shield branded slabs, for example.

Only time will tell. I'm still of the opinion that CBCS is the only intelligent choice for comic grading.

https://www.si.com/collectibles/news/beckett-grading-in-free-fall-according-to-november-gemrate-report

I had no idea Beckett grades such a low volume of cards on a monthly basis. CGC cards graded almost 7 times the amount that Beckett did in November. I thought Beckett was a close #2 to PSA. I'm not sure how accurate the data is since it's from a random article but if it is true and I worked for them I'd be extremely worried about job security.

@flanders - yikes!!
That article is scary - that's a - gonna fire all executives and bring in new leadership to right the boat type numbers.

No way you can show declines when the entire segment is on the rise - a the very least, bare minimum you need to stay flat YoY - a poor performer would grow at the rate the segment is growing and if you are earing your money you outpace the average - sounds like Beckett/CBCS is in for hard times

Maybe they will turn things around - but those types of numbers require certain actions by ownership - and those actions are a choice of bad and worse...

Meh... if I've learned anything from clickbait, news agents, and YouTubers, it's that no one likes to report good news.

In the olden days it was summed up as, "Good news doesn't sell newspapers."

If CBCS goes away, I wouldn't like it, but I'm sure there will be an alternative. I collected comic books long before the cgc and CBCS and I can continue to collect them once they're gone.

I'm not going to sit here and wring my hands over the situation. I've got better things to do with them.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact the Beckett did 1/37th of the card grading volume that PSA did in November. Clearly I'm completely clueless about the industry.

Can it get worse? This seems like rock bottom. November 2024 data shows they're doing 34/1641 of the volume of the card grading industry. That's 2.1% of the total volume. October was only slightly better at 50/1872 or 2.7%. My mind is still blown. I thought they had at least a third of the card market.

Speaking of him, have you ever been to Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California? If not, it's worth a visit.

Nope, I'm allergic to California. I realized this after my third or fourth time working SDCC.

I'm also allergic to NYC. I realized this after I pissed off a teamster during load out at NYCC.

There's also a good sandwich shop near there that I highly recommend. I've cycled up the coast a couple times and always stopped there.

It is a little surprising they didn't have a little more of the market but PSA really is the end-all-be-all in sports card grading. Moreso than CGC is in the comic market. Which is why I'm sure the comic grading companies are a bit nervous about this. It may take time for PSA to settle in with the right, fine-tuned product to draw people over but it will happen and I doubt it will take long since their reputation is something they don't need to work on at all. They'll be 2nd biggest eventually.

But... Beckett will still have exclusive rights to verify sigs on Pawn Stars... so there is that.
