I'm not sure if I'll buy it. It's hard to defend yourself if you're dead, but on the other hand proof is proof, especially if it's in writing. To many people Stan Lee's a legend of the highest caliber and they may not want to destroy that myth.

Here's a reason why I probably won't be:

" This is a case for the prosecution; there is no attempt to be even-handed, and anything that doesn't challenge the tenet that Stan Lee didn't co-create or write the comic books he claimed to have and was credited for is either not included or dismissed with a hand wave."

I've had enough one-sided rhetoric from fanatics for a while ... Don't need it in my comic lore at this juncture ...

The fact that it's dedicated to Bob Beerbohm tells me all I need to know about the author.

Not to mention that Bleeding Cool is the monkey to the cgc's organ grinding. So, every article on their web site is usually taken with a grain of salt.

Like mentioned already, no respect for anyone that attacks someone’s credibility after their passing, if you wanted to dispute claims made by someone, do it while they are alive and can respond to whatever statements you are claiming are lies. Cowardly. I can already see what side of the fence this author lands on by some of the comparisons he/she is using. I would give zero credibility to this book.

Let’s say Stan Lee was a greedy, lying, cheating, traditional rat bastard. Wouldn’t the comic community have eaten him alive many years ago? If he was doing something so egregious as to basically steal every idea and put his name on everything he could profit on at the expense of someone else; wouldn’t someone have kicked the soap box out from under his feet long ago?

I haven’t been in comics long enough to have an opinion on this; only questions. I find it hard to believe this information in its entirety is true.

If his business practices were such an issue; why did marvel survive? Why didn’t everyone opt to work for different publishers? If it wasn’t a problem then; why is it a problem now?

If it’s all true and you chose to let it happen, you agreed to work for hire clauses that didn’t actually agree with, you enabled a systemic issue to perpetuate, and the worst of all you stayed silent; then you would be at fault and Stan would still be the successful businessman who supported the growth, love, and importance of a simple yet complex hobby. Man or monster he grew a culture. If you had a problem; you should’ve said something.

I have no doubt that facts may have been embellished upon along the way, but to the extent this is leading to?

I digress.

Stan Lee was a brilliant marketer. For Marvel, comics and above all, himself.

He had a platform to tell his side and was supported time and again by nepotism. Nothing wrong with those things but they explain the historical biases present.

As for this book, it does not sound very objective. Perhaps it is a response to the less-than-objective enduring narrative (see above). I have no interest in reading a heavily biased book - unless especially well-written and entertaining. I doubt either is the case here.

I’ll pass.

Stan Lee was a great showman and promoter.

Without him Marvel would have gone under a long time ago.

The author has a really long thread over on the CGC forums. The last several pages are just a bunch of back and forth arguing but I've followed and read the entire thing and there is some really good information and links in there.

There's definitely something there. I'd start by contacting her daughter and see what she has to say.

I can see where attacking someone's legacy when they can't defent themselves is bad.But it seems interesting ebough to checkout and see the "facts". As far as to why no one has said anything about it before and why marvel survived we the collector/readers won't ever Really know. I guess I see it like like the Roy Thomas coming out as Co-creator of wolverine right when all other creators are no longer here to say their piece or Batman with Bill Finger and Bob Kane. Not saying Lee is a liar but I feel it's enough for me to checkout.

Not that this is likely a surprise, but there are a lot of folks that have written about MT not being as saintly as she's portrayed. For me, it seems that people tend to document the accomplishments of historical figures without acknowledging that these figures were actually people. Real human beings who make mistakes throughout life. And when you're in a position of power, the mistake can be costly.

Great example is Churchill. Undeniabily amazing when it comes to his leadership during WWII. His policies regarding the famine in India in 1943? Not so much.

Anyway, for any history buffs that want to hear a different perspective, check out the Revisionist History podcast with Malcolm Gladwell. The Churchill one blew my mind, and the one on McDonalds and how they altered their french fry recipe is a really fun listen.

Stan Lee was a brilliant promoter.

He deserves to be revered in the comics world.

The comics industry, from day 1 to until, probably the 80s, was shady to put it mildly, when it came to, rightful credit for work, fair compensation, ownership of original art, etc. So this was the world the brilliant showman and promoter Stan Lee played in.

Stan Lee once took credit for creating Captain America (I'm quoting Alan Moore).

I love Stan Lee but I do not believe the extent to which he is given credit for the creation of the Marvel characters. He was hugely important to comics but less important as a creator and more important as a promoter.

EDIT: Stan was a good creator and good/great comics writer but compared to Jack Kirby (in my opinion), Kirby was the true genius.

I feel like more books would have been sold if the author focused on sharing the contributions of the other creators versus attacking Lee in a one-side manor. My guess is the truth is somewhere in the middle and many people contributed to the creation of the characters.

After that CGCs problems are all fixed now. Wait a minute - that discussion I WILL take issue with. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

It's real easy to make light of a situation you weren't a part of....if you created a multi-million/billion dollar idea/character and you either didn't get credit for it or recognition for it, from a contract renewal perspective, then I'm pretty sure you'd be pissed off or resentful....I would. Marvel was not built by Stan Lee alone....he was comfortable taking more credit than deserved. He even said (I'm paraphrasing) he would take credit for anything not nailed down. Love Stan but he took/accepted more credit than deserved.

That might be true but the way I look at it is like this....If you are the company and you have creators generating a ton of money...you may not give royalties or ownership to those creators but you should probably promote them, give them a raise that's commensurate to the revenues they're generating. Stan Lee was a multi-millionaire while at Marvel surrounded by creators who were not even close to that net worth....that would have to sting
