Opinion: ASM 129 or Hulk 18021322

Collector Danimal1112 private msg quote post Address this user
Looking for opinions on which book to grab next. I am considering buying either an ASM 129 8.0-8.5 or Hulk 180 8.0-8.5. I understand there is a price difference between them. That’s just the budget and grade I would be wanting for each. I eventually want both, but can’t decide what to grab first. I am leaning towards ASM 129 first. I appreciate the opinions.

I think you'll have an easier time getting an ASM 129. Theyre fairly plentiful and reasonably priced.

ASM 129. It's a true first appearance. No argument over which came first, the cameo or the first appearance.

Thanks. I agree with this. I also plan to get 181 as well, but planned to get 180 first. I also considered a raw 180 since the important collectible part is the last page and raw would allow me the pleasure to read and see it.

The ASM 129 is leading for me either way.

Both books are great choices. If you're after both, I would choose the first one of the two that you come across that is the best copy in your budget. Both these books will be readily available.

Somewhat of an aside, but perhaps relevant to ASM129 vs IH180…IH180 is certainly the first appearance of Wolverine, regardless of the silliness of the “cameo” designation.

Of course the value gap between the books suggests the preferred “key” remains 181… could it eventually flip? Anything is possible, and since 180 has essentially maintained its value ratio vs 181 over the past decade or so, it provides more upside (if people come to their senses) with limited relative downside. Will it ever surpass 181? I’d say even correctly recognizing 180 as the first appearance may never offset the better cover for 181… but as an investment 180 is likely the superior option.

So matching 180 vs ASM129, you get a bit of a sleeper benefit in having the true first appearance of a bigger character…

Full disclosure, I have 129 and never bothered with either 180 or 181… but not an “investment” purchase.

All these books trade daily, especially in mid-high grades.

Good luck with aquiring one or both in the near future. Something to be aware of is that you should consider avoiding CGC labels that start with the serial #42 or later. I also believe CGC grading has been highly inaccurate and inconsistent starting in 2019 and has gotten worse every year. I'd make sure to look at high resolution scans of the front and back covers or purchase the slab in person so you can see any imperfections from multiple angles.

CBCS is a better option than CGC and they've had more consistent grading over the years. I have seen my fair share of CBCS slabs and even own several with grades that I don't agree with, I believe it's a far lower percentage than CGC.

The comic market is still crashing. I think Hulk #180 will drop slightly after a spike from the recent movie.

You can look through Heritage Auctions past sales if you don't subscribe to a site that tracks prices. An 8.0 sold for $720 in June. I wouldn't pay any more than around that amount before tax and shipping.

I've only owned 1 IH-180 and 181, but numerous ASM-129s.

Today, without any boring reasoning, I would snag a high grade 180 (9.6-9.8) but only perfect cover wrap.

And sometime later, without even being on the hunt, you run across another 180 (9.2 - 9.4) go for it. But only with perfect cover wrap.

Absolutely no problem having 3 or 4 in the PC... even with a presentable 6.0

If you're planning on getting both, I would take a look at the sales trends and see where each are sitting. @flanders mentioned a movie bump for 180; is 129 seeing any kind of TV show bump? If not, I'd grab 129 and wait for 180 to keep coming down. If yes, I'd get the 180 first.

Thanks for the insight. I have noticed the consistency and grading issues as well. The problem is there are not very many CBCS books available for sale. It seems like there are probably 30-40 CGC listed for sale for every 1 CBCS. It could be as someone mentioned in a previous thread to me that flippers use CGC and more collectors use CBCS, but that doesn’t change the options to buy for someone like me. Ha. Appreciate all the help and feedback though. All valid points from everyone.

I like your style, but an IH 180 in a 9.8 is for sure out of the range I was wanting to spend. I think recent grading inconsistencies and issues I have seen lately has soured me on the 9.8 premium cost too. The 9.2-9.4 would put it on par with the ASM 129 budget I was thinking though. If I went IH 180 in an 8.0-8.5, I was going to look to grab a few other less expensive books to go with it such as iron fist 14 or daredevil 131. I wasn’t considering the IH in a 9.2 to 9.4 but I guess I can.

Also, I am trying to avoid having duplicates because there are just so many awesome books I still want to collect. Once I reach capacity, phase two can be second higher grade copies.

You should buy Hulk 181 first.
Get the best looking copy you can afford while it's still down. You can always go back and get the 180.

Wolverine is the bigger character of the two. Spider-man keys are never a bad idea. I say hunt for both of them concurrently and whichever one pops up first satisfying your criteria, pull the trigger.

My opinion on value still stands, but There are some “reasonably” priced Hulk 180s on MCS compared to others. I’m wondering if these are being listed for quick sale or if the book is cooling off. It’s hard to say with prices all over the place and I haven’t been tracking it.

here’s the link if it helps

Thanks. Yeah. Hulk 180 is for sure easier on a budget. And I feel like there are more available at reasonable prices even on EBay.

In the "near future" my bet is 129.
But, what do I know....No one has a crystal ball, wish I did!
I have always bought what I loved and could pay for.
That's part of the fun! The hunt and deal!
Heck, I would still not be another nobody in our hobby if I ever treated it as a stock market. UGH!

@HulkSmash MCS have their 8.5 IH 180 book priced correctly....at FMV. That's one of many good things about MCS...they're actually interested in selling books. As for the consignments...who knows what their motivations are for posting them on the MCS website...but for some, actually selling the books, does not seem to be one of them.

Also, if the book is actually owned by MCS, you can save 5%-10% by watching for the code word specials they have each week.

Great info. I have bought many items from MCS and didn’t know about this. Where is the code word posted?

You do run the risk of someone else buying it before your chosen book ends up in one of the code word specials selected categories.

The code word doesn't work on consignment items.

@Danimal1112 And the codeword only works for certain "classes" of books each week. For example, the codeword for one week might only apply to:

DC A-L & #'d titles
X-Men titles
Dark Horse titles
Horror titles

So you have to watch and see when the codeword applies to your books of interest. However, as @DrWatson said, there is always the risk that someone else is watching and will snag it before you do.
