I agree with you that alot of buyers don't know what's happening at CGC but I can't imagine that CGC can continue like this indefinitely without the buying market eventually being significantly impacted. If the buying market is eventually impacted then the CGC loyalists will have to address it and do something about....possibly move business to CBCS or PSA.

There's no doubt CGCs product is inferior...by a large margin in my opinion. This can not be sustained without impact. Eventually the word will spread, maybe to the point of no return, unless CGC makes radical changes....and the CGC loyalists will have no choice but to change.

I do think that the people who are more interested in graded books will eventually make their way to one of the grading company's chat boards.

Hopefully, sooner rather than later. I consider myself fairly in the know, and I had at least one banana book. I can't imagine having thirty or so. I'd have a come-a-part.

Knowing artists, writers, graders, pressers, store owners, many dealers and a stray hippie help a lot.

Given all of this news about CGC I feel very fortunate to have gotten the grades I did on the four books I sent in for the Lynda Carter signing.

I had a couple questions for CGC when I was at Baltimore Comic Con and I have to say that the people they had in the booth that day were great.

Too bad things appear to have gone very wrong back at headquarters.

Got this email yesterday as many of us did for the Doug Moench signing.

At the bottom, it says to contact Matt Edwards for more information. So I did.
Here is what I got back;

With the economy in the shape it's been in, and layoffs and bankruptcies in the news every day for the past couple years, and companies like CGC inflating their sizes to cover for a Covid influx... and now the comic market dropping like it has been, leading to less reason to submit for grading... I think it's quite silly to reduce it down to "well that's Blackstone for ya".

That also doesn't explain why CBCS is also going through layoffs.

The overall economy is a huge driver in layoffs at both companies.

You wholly misread my post.

It would seem that layoffs at both companies might have been inevitable.

After the lockdowns, both companies had staffing issues and long turnaround times.

When the government sent out stimulus checks the collectible markets were a huge beneficiary as there was a mad dash to obtain these assets.

Marvel comics in particular saw some price spikes at the peak before the inevitable reversion to the mean.

When there was a rush to get more comics graded to meet this demand, both companies hired more people to get their turnaround times under control.

As the customers buying graded comics have become less eager and more fickle I am sure that has impacted the number of books submitted and the revenues of the grading companies.

Ebbs and flows are just a part of the business cycle.

The corporate politics and the number of comic book people being replaced by those with less knowledge and experience with the hobby is the consequence of large companies buying these start ups and making changes.

Hopefully they will come to realize that good customer service and revenues go hand in hand over longer periods of time.

It has been some time since I was here and am posting very infrequently over at CGC. But this news about Pam and Matt here and about Mike and "others" there really has me thinking.
I remember meeting Steve at the Boston show in 1999 (if I recall it was Dave Cummings' Primate Productions). After a bit of a tiff Steve and I hit it off great for the rest of the show (both East Coasters you know). He was there to promote this idea of encasing comics in plastic. We had some lively discussions about it that day and days to follow. Since then Steve has been a good friend.
Sorry for rambling but the news here and there just has me reminiscing about the "good old days".

I believe I've found another banana book, sigh. šŸ˜•

I will resubmit this one to CBCS because it is a pedigree book. If I find anymore, I'm just going to sell them on and replace them with either CBCS or older label books graded by the cgc.

It's too nerve-wracking. Plus, if the grade drops during resubmission to CBCS, it starts to become too much of a financial loss.

There shouldn't be anymore, but I haven't checked my Star Wars books.

As a seller, that sinking feeling when you go to put a CGC book up for sale on ebay.
You take that one last look at the book just because we're all so OCD.
And you see the banana shape in the case.
Then you see the spine tics from the bent book.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Then you sigh.
You get angry at Sarasota
And you put the book back in the CGC box and tell yourself "I'll deal with this bullsh*t later. I can't knowingly sell this pile of dog crap"

It's been happening constantly for me lately
Except I'm no longer checking for OCD reasons. I've come to expect it now

I believe the banana books are s/n 43 and 44 only, is that right? Or are there 42 examples? I used to know, but can't remember.

It depends on what folks are calling ā€œbananaā€ books. None (zero, zilch) of my 41 (count, not ser#) books graded this year are ā€œbananaā€ books with the pronounced bend. Maybe it is due to lack of any moderns, maybe just lucky. One of those 41 has one end of the book on one side (front of slab) and other end on the opposite side. Is there a curve? Virtually none, but it is there. It is a 43 series book and shows no damage. I was prompted to look closely after making my last submission to CGC and then (after shipping) seeing the forum chatter. If I was not aware of the forum chatter, I would not have noticed. That said, I would absolutely notice the types of bent books other people are posting, especially given many are clearly damaged from the bowing of the book in the slabā€¦

If you consider that one book a ā€œbanana bookā€ then based on discussions on the CGC forum there are books going back at least five years with that issue. Is it a case of people scrutinizing things in a way that they didnā€™t before and therefore catching a non-systemic issue? Likely. But that means the issue is far, far more widespread. I checked all my books and saw no problems (aside from the one mentioned above, which is not bad enough to re-slab) - but I have almost zero moderns in my collection.
