Looking for: Tales of the Unexpected #16 195721287

CBCS Finalizer Wade_Story private msg quote post Address this user
Hello all!
I am looking for a copy of this book to purchase. If anyone has an extra or is selling let me know!

Ideally raw, as I plan to read and would hate to crack a slab, but willing if needed.

Thank you!

I saw this one and reached out with an offer, but I doubt they’re going to accept. Price seems kind of out there…

You have good taste, TOTS is in my opinion the most clearly genuine prototype issue of any silver age superhero character.

I have 4 copies of this book, and wish I had been more proactive in chasing copies of this down since I found out about it being Thor’s prototype in 2015 or so.

The last time I found a copy in the wild from a seller (who priced it as if it were any other early issue of TOTE was from an online search around a year ago.

I actually offered that copy for sale on this board and had no takers.

TL;DR cut short 😉 …..

Of the 4 copies I have, 2 of them I would be willing to sell raw, other 2 I am sitting on until I get around to slabbing them.

Here’s a link with pictures/details of the 2 copies I have available for sale, it’s a 3.0 as it stands now and I would press it before selling it at no charge.

Feel free to make me an offer.

I am also open to trade offers or cash/trade offers.

I accept checks/money orders or mycomicshop store credit gift vouchers as payment.

Mostly looking for GA thru BA romance comics. Or pretty much any CGC or CBCS slabbed books worth $100+ per GPA/gocollect.

The other copy I have is a 2.0/2.5 exceptionally nice page quality…minimum of off-white to white pages and more likely would get a white pages designation than OW/W; full spine roll. Would probably net a 4.0-4.5 if pressed and slabbed.

I would price it the same as the copy above as both will hit 4.0 once pressed and slabbed.

If interested, I can post pics of that copy, as well.

Both of these copies are sitting on the top of stacks of books on my “press and slab” shelves covered with sheets of xerox copy paper to keep dust and light from touching them.

I don’t put books like these in mylite2’s and full backs until I press them.

I think a fair price for that seller’s slabbed 2.5 is probably around $500.

But personally I think the color strike on that copy is a bit weak or slightly faded, I think that’s a contributing factor as to why this slab has 24 watchers and hasn’t sold….another biggie would be that this book pops off in demand when Thor movies come out , that’s been an obvious trend for the past 2 Thor movies.

My raw copy for sale here has much better color strike, I would estimate it at a 2.5 universal grade as it stands.

I bought this copy from Harvey Doss through eBay at a best offer on the same day he posted it on ebay around a year and a half ago.

Lightly dry cleaned it after I received it. Harvey had it graded at a 2.0.

Never got around to pressing it.

I was/am tempted to press it and tuck the detached paper at the staples under the staples, but mostly for eye appeal….but if I do press it at some point if it doesn’t sell by next week, I will likely just give it a standard press and spot press the paper tests with a touch of distilled water and put my tacking iron on it over SRS for a few seconds just so the paper at the cover staples will lie over the staples….if it is slabbed with tucked staple tears, CBCS or CHC will call it restored, despite the fact that the tears would not be sealed…….curious to hear your take on staple tucks on a detached cover like this book, without any tear seals or other resto done.

A press wouldn’t do much as it lies pretty flat naturally, slight stacking curl on the spine area and an impact bend at the base of the spine, clearly visible in the pics. As a CBCS finalizer, I am sure you can predict grades on books as accurately as I can from eyeballing pictures.

Anyway, I am very curious to hear your thoughts on tucked staples without tear seals, as I don’t think they should even be considered as “conserved” , and certainly not restored.

But technically one could argue the case for a conserved grade without any tear seals if the staples are manipulated as would obviously need be done to tuck the staples to the cover.
