New signed books. The top Vampirella is one of my favorites. This is signed and remarked by KyuYong Eom. I love his vision of Vampirella. The others are signed by Greg Land, Scott Snyder and Jenny Frison.

No banana because it is in a pre-1975 inner well with the criss-cross heat seals.

@DrWatson Correct! That appears to be the culprit for all the bananas.

Definitely can appreciate the way the artist avoids over-sexualizing the character, lol.

The MCS Prime auction had a book with "missing pieces" which was just the right fit to fill the missing piece in my Crazy-Quilt collection. This first appearance issue was surprisingly hard to locate over the past year:

Here's the other two Crazy Quilt covers that I picked up last year at OAF CON:

I pulled these off one of the underground dealers on eBay. They're interesting, crude in a Crumb sort of way, and contain a couple spots where I had to set the book down because I was laughing so hard.

Been a while since I posted. I did go a bit overboard on the MCS Prime Auction, but all those CBCS slabs were too awesome to resist. Oh, FYI, I also grabbed a triple signed Batman #618 that was a CGC slab beginning with 38XXXX. I thought I was safe and that banana gate really didn't start until 40 and up. Yeah. WRONG.

Just got my first banana!! Thought I'd come out unscathed, but alas. I planned on breaking this out anyway, but what a nuisance.

A post-1975 book. I have one in the 38’s that’s the same way.

Back cover scans are now more important than ever. You have to look at the inner well. If you have the criss-cross heat seals, you should be okay. If the heat seal conforms to the curve of the inner well, then you have a high potential for a banana slab in the 37s and up. It's almost guaranteed in the 40s and up.

Also, you can't apply the same serial number system to SS books because they have their own unique set of serial numbers. You can get banana slabs in the 2Xs and up. Again, you have to check the inner well heat seal. Especially if it is one of the new labels with the page quality under the number grade.

I’ve never been so much of a CBCS fanboy before where I wouldn’t buy a CGC. That’s changed the past few months. It’s making something’s hard to find as well as I’m finding myself buying things I don’t necessarily need now just because I ran across a CBCS.

Doc, would it be possible for you to post a picture example of each type of heat seal? I know this is the "New to your Collection" discussion but I just thought pics might be helpful to some.

So books with the flaps at the top and bottom should always be okay.

A book without the flaps needs to be checked carefully for the pattern of the heat seal.

I actually have a couple that are different from either of those two pictures.

The first has the criss-cross heat seal but does not have flaps. It's an old label with the PQ above the serial number and is flat as a pancake.

The second (pictured below) has slightly rounded corners on a heat seal that is otherwise a perfect rectangle. That is to say the heat seal does not flare out around the corners of the inner well, but instead entire heat seal lies well outside the inner well recess. If I was going to be really picky I might call it a slight banana.

On the new wells, the heat seal is much closer to the edge of the well as evidenced by your photos. I think that is what causes the bending.

@DrWatson I think you are spot on. That seems to be the case with my ROM 1. I tried to get pics of it but i couldn’t get good angles to see the bend and how the well sits. The entire top edge and top left corner are free so it doesn’t matter anyway; the slab is useless. It going in my next sub to CBCS. I can now see how easy label swapping would be though.

I have modern/copper bananas in 38-41. All purchased before it was a well known problem.

And from elsewhere-

I had to have this one for the absolute absurdity of a 90s gimmick it is.

A standard X-force 1 in the polybag signed by Liefeld on the bag with a sticker and stamp designating this limited edition. Maybe I’ll get it Beckett authenticated with sticker and COA? IDK
