@DrWatson congrats on your acquisition. That's a pretty old label. The (lack of) design is really boring. I nearly fell asleep while I was reading it.

I disagree...I like those first generation labels.

They're okay, but they lack quite a bit of information.

The labels do need to be fairly interesting, but they're not supposed to be the star of the show.

I completely agree that the labels shouldn't overshadow the comic. But IMHO those first gen labels are not professional looking at all. I think they should be easy to read and pleasant to look at. If the comic is important enough to put in a slab, the label should not look like they filled in what little info they provide using typewriter.

Gotta start somewhere.

First, I suppose the question is what is the definition of "cheap"? In my mind (a scary place) cheap differs when discussing different eras. What is cheap for Golden Age books would be not such a deal when you're looking at a Copper Age comic. Realistically, you aren't going to find many (any?) high-grade run-of-the-mill GA slabs for $25 to $40 (just ballparking it here). And a high-grade run-of-the-mill Copper slab isn't going to give you bragging rights at $100. Also, cheap is dependent on how deep one's pockets are.

I will have to look into what I have that leads me to think that I have picked up some el cheapo high-grade GA goodies. I picked up high-grade GA slabs just because of the grade. Now did I get a deal, or am I blowing smoke up my ass? (What does that mean?)

Stay tuned.

Very true. That is usually the case, otherwise we wouldn't have something to talk about. I think that I am suggesting that they could have started with a design that was not so amateurish. I can't imagine that they got together and said, We need to design a good-looking label that displays all the important information
and...
etc, etc and they cane up with that first label.

@OGJackster that is an awesome acquisition. Congrats 👏. Did you have to trade your first born to get it? Probably worth it, depending on the first born. JK. Great trade 👍

It depends on how bad someone wants it. I wouldn't pay more than $25 for it. To someone who really wants it, maybe $150. It could really use a press and clean. Did you scan it through the bag?

It's a nice book, but apart from the signatures, is a Cap 252 a sought after book? Is that a corner crease on the lower right front corner?

Great copy of a great book, @HeinzDad. Very good get.

@Cli4dR3DOg did you upgrade?? I can't imagine you parting with this one unless you did. If so, let's see!!

Two arrivals today:

I try to have a “reader” copy of every slab in my collection. A beater copy with a reproduction cover fits the bill nicely.

I’ve had a higher grade Iron Man #17 on my list for a long time. The color rub on the spine didn’t show up very clearly in the listing, so I missed it. But it’s still a decent copy. I’ll upgrade sooner than later.

Here's the rest of my submissions that have come back from CBCS:

This was a victim of banana-gate. It was a 9.8, but after getting out my magnifying glass, I get why it's a 9.6.

This also was a 9.8 banana. I still think it is, but I'm biased, of course.

This was a 9.6 banana. I'm ok with the 9.4, and the "Exceptional White" designation was a first for me.

This was a 9.8 banana. Glad to see it kept the grade.

And this was a 9.8 banana. Normally I wouldn't mind a 9.6, but I'm trying to get the entire Hush run in 9.8 signed by Jim Lee. So back on the hunt I go. Feel free to question my sanity. I know I do.
