Well, I sure didn’t expect to be heading into Monday night hoping to finish the week 8-8. I will obviously be watching a lot of games over the next couple days to see just what the heck happened. I did watch the Lions, of course. It felt like it was just Tampa Bay’s day yesterday. Everything seemed to go their way. Calls, non calls, every bounce of the ball. The entire game turned on a disastrous play at the end of the first half where the offense lined up and spiked the ball with 3 seconds left. Unfortunately, due to some miscommunication, the field goal team was rushing on the field to attempt the “hurricane” FG. The resulting too many men penalty caused a 10 second run off (the Lions had no remaining timeouts obviously) and zero points scored. The Lions were in chip shot field goal range in the 4th quarter, trailing by four due to the first half mishap, and just couldn’t punch it in. Props to Baker and to the Tampa Bay defense. They were the better team yesterday, but Lady Luck definitely seemed to be riding on their shoulders. For me the biggest of many WTF results was the Saints trouncing Dallas in Dallas. I thought the Saints were basically bringing back last year’s mediocre team, just a year older. Sure, they annihilated Carolina (who seems to be cursed) last week, but I sure didn’t expect them to duplicate that performance this week. I will definitely be watching that game today. Other surprises/ concerns: the Ravens. I knew their suspect offensive line might have some trouble with the Raiders D Line, but in my mind there was no way they fell to 0-2. Another game I need to watch. The Rams seem to be collecting injuries the way we collect comic books and their season may already be over. The Vikings are something of a surprise, although they were always only a QB away from contention. Their season hinges on the question of if/ when San Darnold starts throwing the ball to the other team. All that is merely scratching the surface. Lots of other questions and interesting results as well. Can’t say week 2 has been boring! |
