It's called a market correction. It's funny how so many of the dudebros and flippers who decided to treat the comic book market like a financial market are surprised when it acts like one. Graded modern books imploding is no different than the junk bond implosion back in the 1980s. It hammered the entire market, not just junk bonds.

I have bought graded books for my personal collection, but only because it was a better deal than a raw book of the same grade at that time, for me persuaded, getting a book graded is for preservation, however I do not think the market for graded books has become nonexistent, like @DrWatson pointed out, I believe these flippers are realizing that people are no longer willing to pay their severely inflated asking prices.

For my very first post, I will say when I see a book that has over 3000 books on census at 9.8 that was only published a few years ago and the asking price is close to 1K, I'm not interested. So pricing is a big play in it. It also feels like a split in the hobby between people that actually want books to fill in runs or certain keys that are affordable and those that are cover collectors. They don't want to fill in runs will something they can't read.

Sounded like flipper’s remorse. I doubt anyone would trade their hulk 181 for a ton of “awesome stories” maybe some dead, slabbed, modern day spec for good stories. |

The problem is the CGC fan boys have jumped ship because CGC sucks. Instead of them eating crow and using CBCS which is a superior all the way around. Don’t get me wrong some have switched over to CBCS but they would rather collect raw right now and in the future use the new company that’s getting ready to kick off. Just my opinion.

He's not right (no one wants them), but he's also not wrong. I do alot of selling and suffice to say I can get equal price, in 2024, for a raw book someone "thinks" is a 7.5 vs. a graded book given a 7.5. Defects they think they can fix? - I can get even more for the raw. So, if I can get $100 for a raw book that hobbyists think is a 7.5, why would I pay case cost of an additional $40 and still get $100 for a graded 7.5? Hobbyists that pay attention to details, see that. I've always thought that but never cared because I was just selling them and therefore didn't care what people were buying. Hobbyists have gotten smarter and I've needed to adjust submissions and selling habits. Oh yea... the restoration thing that happens so often. (eye roll) |

What?!? You mean those mass produced shiny baubles sprinkled with fake fairy dust aren't worth anything? Gee... nobody could have seen that coming. As for the rest of it, with the endless parade of excrement from CGC, and the endless parade of blatantly forced mediocrity from Marvel and DC, it's no wonder that "no one is interested". |

Speaking of market implosions, I should invest in AMC and crypto currency now. I hear those are quality long-term investments. My slabbed first appearance of Squirrel Girl didn’t get me the retirement I was looking for. 🤪🤪 |

lol...wait!! were comics meant to be read??!!! Yeah...it's hollow to buy a slab for slab sake - the value is in the enjoyment of the read and the art. Most of my almost 10k comics I read when I bought...then maybe a few I graded for protection or potential future sale. Now because I'm not a flipper when I grade books all I really "need" to get back is my grade/press fees and maybe cover price. also...lol....for ones I buy graded I prefer graded unless I can see the book in hand - that's what the whole graded game was about - letting me know the grade was a real grade from a distance...for those I can still read and enjoy the art with...get this....reprints and omnibus editions! |

@KatKomics agreed with the omnibuses and other collected editions. I will say for older series, I prefer reading the floppies. The glossiness and coloring in the Alpha Flight Omnibus didn’t feel right.

IMHO, the video is long on rants and short on facts. We don't know how much was paid for / what the asking price were of the examples. Market value is market value. If one sells today one likely gets today's market value. If today's market value for a Batman 227 in 7.0 is less than what you paid then yes, you will lose money. We don't know how long they owned the books. We do have an indication of where they were trying to sell books - and I'm not impressed. During the pandemic, prices went up at dizzying amounts and people got spoiled being able to sell books on social media sites at no cost. The auction houses and even eBay (and I'm really not big fan of eBay) provide a service by getting comic books in front of the eyes of people that are there wanting to buy comic books. They provide a service and earn their cut. If the Batman 227 in 7.0 or the FF 48 in 3.5 were put on Comic Connect or Comic Link or even eBay at auction they would most likely sell for today's market value. If today's market value is less than what was paid, then that's just what happens with collectibles. Don't sell - wait. Or take the haircut and reflect on your reasons for collecting comics and what you are adding to your collection. People selling precode horror are not talking about how bad the market is. |
