@HotKeyComics Great information Shelby. Show some of the inserts that come with the foreigns, like the Batman mask you got from me. Some of the French books I have seen had some great inserts that American comics don't have, such as games, masks, puzzles etc...

@HotKeyComics Yes, very informative! I have picked up a few comic books while on travel, not because they were foreign but because I am a comic book collector. No majors finds but I will be on the lookout now. It’s funny that you can find these comics in department store shelves or just lumped with other periodicals. I always need something to do while my wife is shopping or I end up the carrier of stuff.

Here is one that I picked up in Italy with several issues packaged under one book. Sorry about flash but the pages are really glossy.

Here is a Polish version that I picked up in Belgrade.

Are those considered first printings or reprints?

Nice! sorry for the delay responding, I'm in the middle of getting ready to move and sorting comics lol.

Yeah those are first prints, first time they appeared in that country. Italy loves combining multiple issues together and they also use really high quality products too.

Poland is a tough country to get keys from so really nice find!

@HotKeyComics I worked at a couple of art galleries, museums, and design firms at the time.

“Nice find” is relative, but I appreciate the kudos. I am mostly into printed, drawn, and painted works. Back then, my clients were collectors of “high”, cultural, and historical art, like pieces of the Berlin Wall, tribal masks & weapons, vintage royalty attire, out of production arms (such as the Mosin–Nagant), etc. Way too rich for my blood, but research and acquisition were fun!

This year is booked, but I plan to be in Europe for a couple weeks next year. In the meantime, I will research tough countries to get keys from. Thanks

@HotKeyComics Looks like comic book collecting will be a more mature market in the Middle East. If this adds more credibility for a foreign comic, this may help to bring more competition and drive up prices in this region. Thoughts?

There is a lot of increased interest all over the world the last few years as they see record prices keep being set at auction houses, but the Middle East especially has seen a big increase. Several newer publishers have started printing bootlegs for different reasons, one of which is the stranglehold Panini has on the foreign market.

I know one new publisher tried reaching out to Marvel and was ignored so they just printed it. 🤷‍♂️

It is definitely creating more competition, and prices are starting to really skyrocket on the scarcer keys. Comics they used to be able to find locally for $50-$100 are now costing them $300-$500 as everyone is becoming aware of the value around these. Thats obviously going to be driving up prices here as dealers go to restock these big keys and find the prices tripled or more.
The way foreign comics keep growing is going to keep bringing more new publishers to the market, most of which will be bootlegs because of how hard it is to do a deal around Panini.
Most foreign collectors don't mind bootlegs, and some are very hypocritical in selecting only some they like while swearing others are destroying the foreign comic market 🤣

I like them all though, foreign comics are just awesome in the ways they are both the same and different to the American counterparts.

Credibility is definitely increasing around these awesome foreign comics as well though as more see them continue to do well in auctions and more and more people start collecting.

I've said for a couple years now that these are the next newsstands and the market is starting to show signs that I may be right. 🙂 Many smaller foreign keys already outsell their American ones by multiples and its happened a few times on bigger ones as well.

But yeah source prices in original countries have been skyrocketing for about 6 months now, and thsse are firsthand reports from my contacts in those countries. Those markets are going to have a very healthy and profitable future as they continue to grow.

To just give people an idea, here is my partial ASM 300 foreign cover set.

That's an awesome 300 set! I think the black background 300 Italian is probably the most collected foreign comic out there and likely responsible for bringing more people into foreign comics than any other single issue.

I knew that Panini was into comics but did not know they started with cards first. My son likes collecting cards and Panini produces high quality products (high paper stock, high gloss). I looked into it and their cards started in 1961 and the comics line started in 1994 so I can see why they are the 800-lb gorilla.

The concept of IP is not embraced all around the world as it is here. International law might exist but motivation and enforcement might be lacking or with few resources.

On a tangent, the postal service reliability and shipping speed are inconsistent by country and region. For instance, shipping from Murano was slow. I had shipped Venetian glassware on priority to a client and it still took a little under 2 months to get there. Postcards took 4 months 😱 My wife joked that mail carriers were hand delivering by foot and gondola. For what I heard that is pretty common for shipping speed.

Shipping from the UK and Germany was so much faster!

@HotKeyComics Besides Grand Comicbook Database, what other resources are available online? CGC & CBCS population reports? CGC registry?

There are several sites specific to different countries, like comicsbox.it for Italy, and ausreprints.net for Australia. I'm currently working on compiling a list of all these sites.

Population reports are decent, but labeling foreigns has not been consistent for years, so its not necessarily going to be complete with all graded copies. Most are listed under the American counterpart names, but some use the actual foreign title and those are missed.

Just an example two copies of Norway Spider-Man 300 with different label notations:
