Coverless books21094

I have a coverless copy of Batman 2. All the coverless Golden Age I see are NG rated and slabbed. Is that a rule? If it’s pretty sharp, could it get a FR rating? And would that be better than NG?

Not selling it.

At CBCS you will receive a grade (albeit not a very good one). If I’m not mistaken we give coverless books a 0.3.

I have a Silver Surfer 1 missing the front cover (back cover present) and it’s a CGC .05.

If a book is missing front and back covers CGC considers it incomplete and gives “NG” or “No Grade”

CBCS does not issue “NG” but its grades for incomplete books are pretty cut and dried and don’t really take into consideration the condition of the rest of the book. The guidelines are listed in the “Grades” page of the main CBCS Site

These designations are only used for the purpose of authentication. Numerous collectors and comic fans will purchase coverless comics to either read or to obtain a filler copy of a book for their collection.

Books that are coverless, but are otherwise complete, will receive a grade of 0.3 from CBCS as will covers missing their interiors.

Coverless copies that have incomplete interiors, wraps or single pages will receive a grade of 0.1 from CBCS as will just front covers or just back covers.

Copies in this designation typically will in most cases be beyond collectability to the majority of the hobby.
Rare key comics and incomplete pages i.e. centerfolds are considered to be valuable by the collecting community for either restoration purposes or for individuals who just wish to own a piece of comic history.

So your book, assuming it is missing the whole cover and is complete will receive a 0.3 from CBCS, regardless of the condition of the rest of the book. Whether that is better than “NG” would be up to you

You'd rather have an NG from the cgc as opposed to a 0.3 from CBCS?

No just an ungraded slabbed from CBCS. Do they assigned an NG or similar?

You can do Slab Only.

Slab-only is a great option. I'm glad CBCS has it. Here's an example.

No grade...but in this example, verified signatures.

I have another slab-only on the way now to CBCS.I have a Batman Odyssey 1 signed by Neal Adams for VSP.

I appreciate the CBCS adoption of Overstreet Grading standards for coverless books. Or covers only or single pages. .3 for coverless books or covers only. .1 for single pages.

IMHO, it seems like cheating for a grading company to take money and then assign a grade of NG (No Grade) to a comic sent in. Might as well just be slab only. Which CBCS also offers as an option.

I've sent maybe half a dozen coverless books to CBCS for the .3 grade. Much prefer this to an NG from that place in Florida.

I have a few coverless books in my collection that suffered in my
many moves over the years...never thought about having them slabbed
for shear preservation.

This is the only coverless comic we have left, a Marvel Mystery Comics #48. The cover missing isn't surprising given that it's such an iconic "flag cover". Slab-only? Hmm...

CBCS only does "Slab Only" for signed books. You'll get a 0.3 blue label if you send it to CBCS.

Sure looks like there's a slab only... although in all honesty I don't see a way to get "Slab Only" under any circumstance during the ordering process.

It's on the drop down... at least it is for magazines. But they've never had a blue SO label, only yellow.

There's a Marx Brothers routine in there somewhere!

The cgc should order some banana shaped dildos imprinted with the slogan, "I got f#(ked by the cgc." They could included one with every completed, large modern order as a complimentary gift.

The thing that I find the most insane about this is; if it was the pgx bending books, the internet would have exploded! But because it was the cgc; crickets.

Well, I just did the online invoice to submit a coverless DD 1 (1964) that has bunch of signatures under "slab only". I wasn't required to list signatures.

If I get an email a week from now saying that I have to pay to verify the signatures or CBCS won't do slab only I will update here. Same if they move it to graded and blue label. But I was able to create the submission as slab only at slab only prices.

This is a friend's book and they want to encapsulate it to help preserve it but they don't want to pay what it would cost to verify all the signatures.

You'll still have to pay for the signature verification. They did away with the first signature being included in the already discounted SO price. It even says so on the pricing page now. It never did make any sense, so I suppose it was only a matter of time before they stopped letting people like me take advantage...though, it's never been a commonly known about service.

So given the discussion on this thread, I decided to email CBCS customer service and ask about unwitnessed signatures, slab only and grading.

Customer service emailed back promptly. There is now NO WAY to get books graded and encapsulated or only encapsulated without paying to verify any unwitnessed signatures. Additionally, if any signature(s) fail verification they will not encapsulate the book.

Thank you for reaching out. Our verification policies have been updated, and every signature must go through verification in order to be processed, whether it's grading or Slab Only. Our Slab Only option has always been for books that have signatures on them, that are not going to be graded. However, the signature MUST be verified to be slabbed. We no longer slab unverified signed books, nor books that have signatures on them that have not passed verification. If you submit the book for regular grading, the signatures also have to go through verification. I hope this information helps.

So I called CGC customer service. Guess what? That's their policy now as well. You cannot skip getting unwitnessed signatures verified and take a grade hit. I didn't ask think to ask if they have any rule of not encapsulating books with unwitnessed signatures that fail verification.
