By my--somewhat limited--experience, discussions like this have resulted in something similar. |

I'm almost certain my local shop is a cbcs facilitator. I'll have to ask next time I'm in. I remember one guy I used to work with was a volunteer there and he talked about cbcs all the time.

The message should be for everyone and should mention the lawsuit and how CGC's actions were stifling to restoration innovation and best practices. It should end with CBCS offering to re-evaluate and regrade books from that restoration company at no charge. Contrasting CBCS as an ally and asset to the industry, as opposed to the self-serving actions of CGC. If they did this, they should also consider reaching out to the restoration company and let them know so they can tell their customers. Maybe even offer to put the name of the company on the label in the restoration details, since this is a unique situation. |

Absolutely shameful that CGC has taken the thread down (as I'm sure the would have been more than happy to have it up if the results were different). I hope all the details from the trial get out. |

I guess the issue is the restoration is so good it mimics the original and is undetectable. They are essentially recreating the original. Reminds me of the Star Wars action figure scandal with the guy who was sealing original backs and blisters using the original sealing machine. Undetectable. Enough to irk any collector.

@MatterEaterLad - Based on the videos, they were using a stereo/dissecting scope. It’s a low power instrument (usually from 10X to 40X) that is able to illuminate what you are looking at from above (and/or below). Typical microscopes (CLMs - compound light microscopes) illuminate specimens/objects from below, so they need objects that allow at least some light to pass through them. They typically enlarge images 100X to 500X. Stereoscopes also have a much greater working distance (the space between the objective lens and the specimen/object), which allows the restoration work to take place. CGC or CBCS would be able to see the same amount of detail using a decent hand lens, triplet, or jeweler’s or watchmaker’s loupe. You would not need anything fancy or expensive to view the resoration. |

CGC should just combine all their scandals. The Meyers books get unfair grading, then get stolen by CGC employees and sold on eBay, where someone else buys them and switches books, has the books graded again, with extra Newton rings, warped inner wells, and pieces floating around inside the slab. |

I talked to Emily Myers. I wasn't sure if they'd get back in the restoration business, but they're coming back. They're looking for collectors who have big books they'd like restored/conserved. If anyone is interested, shoot me a DM and I'll connect you. |

Quote:Originally Posted by MatterEaterLad A few years back it was widely reported that the Myers were not conducting business in a "normal" restoration service way. You could not send them books to restore and then have the books returned to you - like say CCS, Restoration Lab or Eclipse Paper. Instead, the Myers ONLY worked on big expensive books that were going to be sold and the profits then split. This seems to be reinforced by your statement that they are currently "looking for collectors that have big books...." They were not interested in doing restoration of comics on a paid hourly rate. I have an AF 15 I might be interested in having restored. But I want it back. Maybe you could ask Ms Myers if they actually do restoration for hire versus restoration only on a "if the book is big enough and it is then sold and the profits split" |

I wrote the decertation on what I believe to be restoration for the court case. I was NOT on anyone's side. Just explaining what restoration is and how to determine the amount of restoration. like I stated, I did not care about either side, I just care about our great hobby. |
