Has anyone bought comic books from GRUMPY OLD MAN'S COMICS?21001

Collector Rafel private msg quote post Address this user
Hi all my FORUM friends,
I ordered (29) assorted comic books, magazines and (1) (TREASURY) SUPERMAN vs AMAZING SPIDER-MAN.

Everything Alan said was spot on and better!!

My presser is at the SDCC and I can't wait for him to get back so he can press them (if needed) and off to CBCS for grading!!

The Luke Cage Hero for Hire #1 and STRANGE TALES #169 should come back as 9.6 or 9.8, they are that nice!!

Thank you Alan. I PM'ed you.

Grumpy old man's comics has been one of my lcs for the last five years.

Here's a couple of old photos of the store. The books on the wall are probably not there anymore that you can see.

The only thing I don't like is he uses a printed price guide. When I suggested he look into gpanalysis it seemed to fall on deaf ears.

gpanalysis is for cgc graded comic book sales.

The shop mainly sells raw books.
If the shop is grading books as VF/NM and selling me at that price from over street and I'm sending them to CBCS and they are coming back as 9.6-9.8. I'm ok with that.

To each their own I suppose.

Example, Swamp Thing 3 graded as VF++ $75.

Sent it in as is without a press.

So this book cost me all up around $110.

I don't have gpanalysis for cgc books.
If someone has it can they post what a 9.6 sells for please?

@southerncross

I understand that gpanalysis is for graded but if your raw book is priced at a graded books price I think it is over priced unless there is something unique about the book that makes buying it for the price difficult.(such as a one off sale or something of that nature)

I bought a demon 1 and the price was fair. But when I inquired on another set of books I was quoted gpa type values. If his grading is perfect, after grading and shipping I would lose money. I would be better off buying a graded 9.0 and not take the risk.
As you stated, to each their own. I didn't leave on bad terms with Alan. I just disagree with his methods. But obviously they work or he wouldn't be doing as well as he does.

You can always ask me what gpa is, if I'm on, I'll be glad to look it up

I'm glad you walked away with an exceptional deal

Edit

FWIW, the demon 1 looked fantastic to me, and I hope it comes back in really high grade. I am tempted to buy another copy.

Thanks mate.

And I want you to know my reply was not some koolaid devotion to one of my lcs.

I wouldn't say all his books are bargains.

As a collector I look for bargains and the way dealers price certain books to find that win.

One thing I like to collect are picture frame marvel comics.
One that eluded me because of price was Night Nurse 1.

I found a dealer at a con having a raw 3.0 for $350 on his wall. Crazy price for me.

Just looked on eBay and saw these lower grade copies.

These came in roughly 8 months ago at Grumpy old man's comics as a set for $135 plus tax.

Pricing these by a physical price guide turns these into bargains that I cannot get.

It's all about looking for books and when they are priced at deals jumping on them.

Agreed. I wish I knew what price guide he uses so that I can not bother him with questions.

Over street, key collector and possibly something else.

I find it fun in the hunt, finding that cool win for a book.

Another example is Tales from the Zombie.

Grumpy old man's price $55 plus tax.

I thought that was a good deal

I just looked on eBay just now.

Looks like I got a good deal. Thank you over street

My best advice is just look at the shops website, if you see a book that looks good to you and the price is right then put it in your cart.
Otherwise I'd move on. What I do at shops, cons and online auctions.

I think they also advertise their books on Collectorscomics.com as an ebay alternative.

Another set of "new" old books being added over the next 2 days. Go to website and use "new" filter to see the latest stuff. Most of the books posted in the last month are from Mark's Collection. This collection is truly a find and Mark is a wonderful individual to do business with. If you see a book you like, it's cool to contact me to see more pics to pick a copy if there are multiples avaialble. I have started saying Multiple in the heading, but many already listed do no t say it, so cool to ask.

I never claim that my grading or pricing is perfect. I have been buying and selling comics since I was a young kid (and as my store name implies - I am no spring chicken). I use Overstreet 90% of the time and do some checks with Key Collector, Go Collect, My Comic Shop and very occassionally eBay (usually if I cannot find a price for an obscure item). As a Brick & Morter store, with well over 100k in inventory, tools that change pricing on a weekly basis are just not practical - not enough hours in my day to react to someone selling on ebay and the price changing on a whim. That more times than not probably works in your favor - particularly if you come into the shop. Once things are priced, they generally stay that way until they have sat for too long, and then I review and change prices. Doing that is all dependant on how many hours in my day.

Anyway I try my best to be fair, transaprent and enthuised with my dealings in Comics. I love the hobby and hopefully it shows.

Peace.
Alan

I go there when I get a chance. It's about a 30 min drive. Great shop I usually end up buying sets and some singles but never any wall books.

Also apologies for my website currently. I am currently battling with Square engineers that "turned on" everythiing in my entire inventory on square onto my website. They are telling me it is either all or nothing... Great customer service. I am slowly turning off items that should not show. Please be patient with it. If there is a pic, it is good! Peace
