Like gluing or taping a torn page is preventing tearing or detaching but the damage still exists without alteration other than means of conserving the current condition. Restoration would seal the tear, reattach a page, fill a missing piece, etc and depending on the scope revert the book to prior damage condition with minor to extensive alterations to achieve the desired restored condition. I believe less is more, I’m all for conservation over restoration, Some don’t like it, some chase a number. I’ve always thought “ at what point do you consider what is actually original to an extensive restoration?”. Then you have other hobbies like classic cars where frames and bodies are brought back from the dead (with original parts) with the majority sourced to bring back to its glory and that’s ok even in a world in which how many original to the car parts are present, but there are limitations to what is left and needs to be sourced or fabricated. To continue my rant; cars have a finite repairability leaving perfectly good donors that otherwise could not be restored without sacrificing another perfectly good candidate and creating double the work. Comics are different to me; how many Action #1s do you have to sacrifice for that 9.2 restored with pieces filled, pages added, cover replaced?, but somehow it’s the same as far collecting in general. End rant. |

Conserved: Manipulation of a book to halt further damage or deterioration. Intention is to repair to prevent further damage. Restoration: Manipulation of the book to improve the visual condition. Pieces and colour are added to the book to hide flaws. The intention of restoration is to purposefully make the book look better than it did before the restorative work. |

Hi, I am wondering if there is any special reason 2 of the 3 books I just got back from CBCS have gold CBCS logos and the other one is not? Any information would be awesome.

@GeneralGrievous - Thanks for the picture. Looking at other posted books with the new labels, blue label books graded 9.8 have what looks like a black CBCS logo, while those 9.6 and below get the gold logo.

Quote:Originally Posted by GAC To add to this, it goes beyond intent. Conservation aims to ONLY utilize archive safe materials and techniques (the stuff often used in Museums and Galleries), whereas Restoration will use anything it can to achieve results (whatever paint or markers they want, glue that isn't ideal for long term preservation). The amount of work is also a factor, with Conservation grades aiming to do as 'slight' amount of work to the book as possible (but with Restoration there is no upper limit to the amount of work that can be done to a book. Some Conserved books that have had TOO MUCH work done to them have come back as Restored) Conservation also aims to have all the work be fully reversible - if you want to remove all conservation work done to a book in order to reset to how it originally was, then it is often possible without any further damage to the book. Restoration does not concern itself with this, and often restoration removal requires damaging the book to a worse state than it started in (scraping color touch off, cutting away pieces etc) |
