OT; What are you eating / cooking part 520981

We should have the forum rate our packages. HeinzDad private msg quote post Address this user
I’d start a thread but maybe five of us would post.

Garden Stories; tell em if you got em!

You guys ever buy ladybugs for your gardens? I’m fertilizer and pesticide free so we do once every year. A bag of a thousand is like 10 bucks and you can keep them in your fridge and release them intermittently.

I also have two more garden stories if anyone cares, lol. One about a weed and one about a pest!

Love garden stories, I have a client that has a natural fertilizer company called superpoop (worm castings) I also bury a fish carcass under each tomato plant for a slow release fertilizer. The lady bug deal is pretty cool!

I guess my compost is a fertilizer.

So ladybugs can survive long periods of refrigeration? Do they go into some kind of hibernation?

@Rbolton happy 50th! I'll likely be bald and grow out what I expect to be a gray beard to make up for it when I'm that age.

We tried out our Dutch oven last night and made Cajun Rice dressing we saw on Cooks Country.

Also, red beans, andouille, and cucumbers.

Sun sugar cherry tomatoes.

I put the cherry tomato by my compost bin this year. They usually grow roots out of the bucket drain holes. This one is Hulking out.

I’ve never done a soil test until this year. We had shit go tits up early so we got a testing kit from the local botanical garden. I refused to believe the soil was the problem.

We gotta add potash in the fall.

May I ask how much did soil test cost?

It was 12 dollars. Itll be harder find someone that can give the kit we got than pay. We had to take 10 different samples, dry them, mix them, and submit.

I add a decent load of cow manure from the farm every year in the spring, plus the addition of fish carcasses at the bottom of the tomato plants at the time of planting. I would be curious as to what a soil test would yield. I am also curious in the cost of the test if you don’t mind me asking.

We add a bin of compost every fall when I empty the raised bed. We dig all the dirt out and put it on a tarp. Compost gets buried because it’s mostly grass clippings and kitchen scraps for the year. I try to add brown leaves to it but it doesn’t happen often.

Making pulled pork for sandwiches with homemade coleslaw and sautéed string beans from the garden.

What brand of bbq sauce does everyone use? I have tried to get away from ones with tons of added sugars and non-natural ingredients. I’m currently using the one on the left, and I have also used the one on the right, which is probably better for you.

Ed, I’m not sure how good for someone it is but I’ve been using Hoosier Daddy bbq sauce. They sell a mix pack of 3 and I’m on my fourth set over the past 2-3 years.

My family uses Sweet Baby Ray's
I buy Bullseye and pour Dave's Insanity Sauce down the neck and shake it up. Then I remove the label so nobody uses it by accident

Famous Dave’s Devils Spit is a staple here but only for me on the side. Pretty much no one I know (except me, I’ve done it) wants their ribs or PP soaking in it.

I can do a healthy amount of Devils Spit, but like you, nobody else in my family will eat it, I used to get Famous Daves Texas Pit Sauce, but sadly none of the stores around here carry it anymore.

Gardening Update: Taking it up a notch to protect our garden this year. Tired of losing all the crop to squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and other pests.

They seem to leave the basil and parsley alone.

Have been getting several green beans every week, cukes are starting to grow, and we have finally picked a zucchini. Eggplant are flowering, so hopefully we’ll get something.
