CGC knowingly damaging books?20972

Are all the banana books in slabs sandwhiched between two pieces of mylar type material (without the tray) or are some of them also where the books sit down in a tray or well?

I think they are mostly newer slabs with the inner well that has what I believe you are describing as a “tray” that the book sits down in. The vast majority of the slabs reported as being impacted have been modern age book era and not so much silver age.

I had a few SA books get the banana treatment. More modern books though. I have to hand it to them though, the case is thicker and harder to break but I think they went about it the wrong way.

Bumping an old thread, sadly it's still not fixed. I got my books back with them having me send in a mechanical error and well still Banana effect. Im so done with CGC,

I would love CBCS to offer a banana label, even if its a joke and limited time event to send in my power girl books as a goof, Id gladly pay for it to have it displayed.

You can't press out a color break. The color is gone. It's never coming back without color touch, which equals restoration.

I found one banana book in my collection. It's at CBCS right now with a press screen.

Hopefully, it can be rescued.

No more books graded by the cgc unless they are old or older label books.

There's no point in borrowing trouble.

I think they gave you "gift" 9.8 grades; knowing full well that they weren't 9.8 with the color breaks because ...... There'd be hell to pay if they were originally a 9.8; they damaged the book with their banana situation, and they end up giving the "real" grade of 9.4/9.6 to these books.

Consumers will lose their proverbial sh*t if these mechanical errors are not given the exact same grade they were before the banana. They're giving out the gifts as the lesser of options where folks flip their lid. They're choosing the coward option.

Thinking about this while two books that were banana'd sit at cbcs that were a 9.8 and a 9 6. Fingers crossed the press works. 🤞🤞🤞

@VinceVellCustoms sorry this happened, and I'm in the same boat with you. I had a couple batches with CGC, and, after looking more closely, even my vintage books have a slight curve and are not sitting flat. I did a ME on 2 high end modern books, and they did nothing. Frankly, I thought one of them even looked worse. I remain hopeful that they'll press out and regrade the same with CBCS because I didn't see any damage, but hard to say.

I keep an eye on the thread over there, and I can't believe there are folks thinking it's fixed and they should resume sending books in.

I've already sent the majority of mine that were affected to CBCS over the past couple months, and the rest will definitely be re-slabbed at some point. Lot of frustration, time and money wasted with those guys. The only reason I graded with CGC was for cost and re-sale value or for in-house signings. Lesson learned.

I've got my in-house signings coming back tomorrow. 3 Jim Lee/Scott Willilams/Alex Sinclair books -- all allegedly 9.8 (which they were when I sent them in, because they were slabbed as 9.8s). We'll see if they're flat or it's just more bananas. I really, really wish CBCS would get more in-house signings, especially with the big name creators (Lee, McFarlane, Miller and Steranko are at the top of my list).

..... and yet, CGC's TAT just increased. I just don't get it.
Are hobbyists truly increasing their submissions throughout this disaster area in Sarasota? 🤷‍♂️

Or is there another not obvious reason TATs are increasing there?

I think this is the reality (with CGC and CBCS): The people on these forums represent a small fraction of collectors. The outrage and nonsense we collectors here see and notice, are just a tiny % of the collecting community. The rest are blissfully ignorant or knowingly don't care.

For the last 3 weeks of October, CGC had a 20% off grading and pressing sale. I'm sure that filled the CGC mailroom.

I just saw CGC labels that start with 45 for sale on this week’s auction at MCS. So they have started a new fiscal year, but did they fix the problem?

On the CGC side, very few reports of "no problem", while intermittent posts of "still happening".

It's likely that they still don't know what's causing it. But their company mantra is All Is Well.

I don't understand how CGC...25 years into their existence...can't correct this....they used to have decent slabs...there are examples of far superior slabs available to them to copy, but yet, this is still a thing. CGC are the absolute worst. They blow donkeys!

They can correct it. It will cost money to correct it. They don't want to spend the money. It will be corrected once they've blown through the current inventory. Unfortunately, thousands of books will be damaged and no longer representative of the grade on the label... if they ever were to begin with.

Some of the most delusional people posting in that thread over on the CGC boards.

"This is the 7th-10th time resubmitting for mechanical error, and they're still damaged!"

"Most of my previous submission of 50+ books came back banana'ed and damaged... I hope my other 3 large submission I've sent since are going to be okay!"

"These 9.8 books I received all have dings and spine ticks along them... I'm going to crack and resubmit 30 of my other good 9.8s and hope to get them back as 9.9s and 10s!"

I really wish these collectors would stop giving them their money, but many are too far gone it seems.

Unfortunately those that have damage from Signature Series books have very few options besides hoping it gets fixed with a reholder as a Mechanical Error. Otherwise the signatures are worthless. I agree and don’t understand those that submit more or crack and resubmit to CGC.

Maybe in time they'll be okay again but the wizbangs in charge have other plans apparently.
