DC Pulls Francesco Mattina Variant Covers Following A.I. Art Allegations20937

CBR posted this topic on their website.

I pre-order almost all my current titles. Every once and awhile I'll receive notification that a cover was deleted. I saw my Batman: The Brave and the Bold changed from Francesco Mattina to Khary Randolph. I didn't think too much about it until I saw the CBR article.

I'm not surprised that someone tried to use AI to create a cover. More and more people are using AI to create fiction and now we see it in comics. Crazy!

It's way easier and if you can get away with it I get it. I don't like it but I get it

Very interesting. Lots of stuff online about him stealing ideas or tracing art from other artist.

I thought AI cover art was an excepted practice. I don’t consider AI generated images as art. Yes it takes time, effort, and the knowledge of how to use the advanced programs and I can respect that. Art come across any type of medium, but I’m on the fence for AI. Maybe it’s ignorance; do advanced generators have as much random outcomes as basic programs or are they more accurate to description where an exact image can be recreated on a new query? I can’t imagine one typing out a description, call it good and send it as OA.

Without delving too deep into metaphysics, AI (and people) create few wholly original things. Art included.

The difference is the degree of borrowing/stealing from the prior work of others, and the ownership of that extent of borrowing/theft, historically rested with a person. With AI, that grey zone of authorship isn’t really owned by anyone. A prompt can generally direct the “creation” but the algorithm decides what it chooses to take and how to blend (which is a simplification of what AI does - it infers relationships and uses publicly available information to generate expected outputs).

Of course Mattina has already - allegedly - been aggressive in his use of the “grey zone” in his traditional art. So now you have potential plagiaristic intent layered on what is already some form of “unauthored” plagiarism (AI)…

Fascinating.

@HulkSmash it is not an accepted practice in the industry, and is wholly looked down upon. This is the second instance of dc having to pull ai covers. I normally don’t involve myself in forum discussions but when it comes to the livelihoods of myself and my friends I will make mine and the overwhelming majority of comic artists thoughts known.

We know it sucks but it's going to be the standard in like 10 or 15 years. Sadly people are going to talk about how it used to be better but it's going to just be the standard. In 50 years people we be collecting the real art like we collect pre code. It's gonna suck but I'll be dead so whatever.

I can't draw a stick figure but if I learn how to use the right computer program can I be an artist? Seems like it would be fun.
