What do you think?

What will future 9.9s do to the $170K price?

I predict a lot of 9.8 graded comics will be resubmitted in attempts to get 9.9 or higher thus making the Sarasota Shit Show a pretty penny.

That's not a spine roll.
It's a misaligned cover.
A manufacturing defect... which is allowed.

Manufacturing defects are not allowed in the 9.9 and 10.0 grades. At least the didn't used to be allowed. I suppose this change in procedure is part of the New & Improved CGC. Get your comics graded 50% higher with the cgc's new grade booster service. Charges and restrictions may apply. Void where prohibited. Not all customers will experience a boost in grade.

That grade was bought and paid for by Metropolis. I will never be convinced otherwise. A $170,000 label with a 9.6 book attached to it. That's all they bought.

A 9.8 maybe, except for the dinged corner, 1/16" miswrap, large yellow acid stains, and the two finger smudges on the left side of the back cover. Every bit a 9.6. Never a 9.9.

I hate this "new" 9.9 pre-screen!!!!

It hurts the market!😡

For instance, it makes a 9.8, which is an insane grade and makes people pay less because the is/are a 9.9. But.......... if they don't give any 9.9's to someone who sends in 30 books (and the submitter can grade) if they don't give one 9.9, the "PROGRAM" won't work when clients lose money. I have NEVER believed in such a program at both CGC or CBCS.

9.9 and 10.0 should be, and IMHO, are unicorns. Try and find one. I think it took a year before we at CGC found a 10.0

End of rant, sorry!

You run the 9.9 prescreen for say ten years and get a few 9.9s out there.

Then you implement the 10 prescreen and you get the 9.9s coming back in and all the 9.8s for a clean press and starch for another crack at it.

Hey, it makes money.

@#$^¢ the hobby, money today and worry about money and future profits and the hobby tomorrow.

The optics on CGC for this is not good.

It does appear like they're trying to monetize books that have already been graded. They are encouraging or facilitating the CPR game.

They started the monetize of books when they used the qualified grade.

A poor/ fair book is still a .05/1.0

Calling it a 9.2 qualified doesn't magically have the missing page or coupon appear back inside the book.

Mutton dressed up as lamb is still mutton.

Hands up old collectors who remember those shady dealers with their ads, if it wasn't for the missing back cover it would be near mint.
And they never priced the book at poor either 🤪

Not like it is new on their part. New labels. New holders. The OCD in many a collector had them sending their books back in so every slab looked the same. This is just a different flavor of why to send books back in.

Although there is no official 9.9 prescreening Matt Nelson, CGC CEO announced in an interview about 5 months ago that he expected more 9.9 to come to the market incl that he expected that there are some 9.9s among the existing 9.8s

There isn't a 9.9 prescreen.
There has only been talk of one coming.
There is, however, retailers buying grades, like the one in this thread.

Steve is right though...if a prescreen equates to more 9.9's just to validate the service, it's bad for the hobby.

They started the monetize of books when they used the qualified grade.

Actually, the cgc began monetizing books when they began putting books in cases, assigning grades, and fractioning the higher graded books into 9.6, 9.8, 9.9, and 10.0 grades.

It really took off when they began to aggressively discount grades due to pressable defects such as light bends and non-color breaking creases. Once pressing was "officially" declared a non-restorative process, it was Katie bar the door.
