I had a random thought. What do you think would be the benefit or drawback of vacuum sealing or heat sealing comics and magazines?

No benefit and potentially some damage. Comics need to breath to minimize accumulation of off-gasses and bacteria that can damage them.

no benefit to heat sealing or vacuum sealing....only drawbacks. Books will be damaged doing either of these. Heat sealing does not allow books to breathe. Vacuum sealing put stress on the book as all the air is sucked out and also doesn't allow the book to breathe. |

Ummm... isn't that exactly what grading companies DO? They heat seal in a mylar "well" so they not (complete with microchamber paper to counter the off-gassing).

Quote:Originally Posted by MurrayC Mixed info on this but the stronger evidence is the inner well is not fully sealed (intentional gaps). Of course you could replicate this if heat sealing yourself… not sure the risk/reward makes any sense. Just mylar bag it. |

Quote:Originally Posted by Davethebrave This is my understanding as well. CBCS heat seal is not fully sealed around the comic allowing the book to breathe....CGC used to/might still (unsure) completely seal the book hence the inclusion of microchamber paper to address the off-gassing. This is/was also the idea that CGC books needed to be re-slabbed every 7 years. |
