So here's a question for those of you who bought one or more books from this collection: which book, of those you bought, is your favorite? Not necessarily the book that might end up being the most expensive... just the one that you were most stoked about when you bought it? For me, it's the copy of Wonder Woman #199 that I was lucky enough to get. I think this one was a one-off although I don't know for sure (@southerncross??). I have always loved this cover. Jeff/Catherine Jones just hit a home run on this one and this copy is beautiful with great centering. |

@DWeeB1967 That's a sweet copy. It would look great in my chained collection. Tough to find this nice. Let me know when you are ready to part with it... |

@Nearmint67 Thanks! It may be a while before that happens. I also ended up with a copy of WW #200 from the collection. Also a chained cover as I'm sure you are aware. This one is not *QUITE* as nice as the #199 but it is still really sharp. |

@DWeeB1967 I've bought 6 books from Alan and I love them all! I haven't sent them in for grading yet because I'm going through my collection to see what else I want to send in. These are at the top of the list though. |

@DWeeB1967 Yup... Also on the want list. Early DC's are tough in high grade.

@Nearmint67 Yes they are. I've always been a DC collector so I feel your pain. That's why I was so happy to see these two WWs pop up... and why I bought them as soon as I saw them. I knew they wouldn't be available if I waited.

@OGJackster I ended up with two copies of Demon #1 just like you did. Those two I actually *DID* get graded already. One came back as a 9.2 and the other came back as a 9.8. I was considering auctioning off the 9.8 to pay for some other books I recently purchased but, man, am I having a hard time doing that. |

@OGJackster Oh and those Swamp Things are bonkers. I grabbed a few of those, too. Shame that a #1 never appeared.

Quote:Originally Posted by Nearmint67 That's how I'm leaning now. Kind of a shame though because the 9.2 is better centered than the 9.8. It just has a little ding in the upper left front cover and, according to CBCS, some issues on the back cover although I'm having a hard time seeing them. |

I went to grit city today and I couldn't even look at the bronze books dealers had as they all look like low grade copies. The bronze I did buy were books not in Mark's collection like romance. @DWeeB1967 nice picking up the two wonder woman's, those were single issues and I had I'd seen them first they wouldn't of made it to the website lol. I missed out on quite a few books myself that were one offs or limited amounts, but there's so much that there's something else always I'm interested in so no disappointment. |

As for the most favorite book. Even though only four copies these are ridiculous condition wise. A Treasury size black cover with white pages and sharp corners is amazing. Especially when bought straight off the distributor and never made it to the news stands to be damaged. As soon as one was priced I bought a copy, then a week later I bought another copy. $55 each plus tax. Another regular bought the third copy. A couple months later a copy was still there with the manufacturing error of the folded center page and I bought that copy too. Here's the pic of the first two. Just 50 year time capsule stuff going on there. |

Honorable mentions. Books I love the cover and condition. These two Iron man 44s. There has yet to be a 9.8 graded by CGC and I'm thinking maybe the same with CBCS. Though I'm thinking this copy won't cut it for 9.8 with that color breaking crease on the spine. This copy has a couple of spine dents and no color breaking creases and razor sharp corners so I'm hoping this is a unicorn 9.8 And these one off horror. The condition of this book is plain freakish. So much you'd probably be hard pressed to find a copy just as nice on the news stands 50 years ago. |

What is going on here with Mark's books? How are all these multiple, super high grade books appearing in this one location? Is all this from his personal collection originally purchased in their time? This is an anomaly to have all this sweet, sweet raw goodness in one place.

Quote:Originally Posted by GAC Mark was in his early 20s and he was friends with a woman who worked in a distribution business for news stands and he was allowed to buy whatever comics he wanted at 40% off cover. So he would buy the books and put them inside one of the empty comic book boxes the books were delivered in. Why some boxes are Charlton boxes. Which he taped up and took home and stored under the sub-floor of his home. There were a lot of boxes like this. I even found a receipt in one of the boxes when I was unpacking, I kept the receipt and tucked it in with my Daredevil 131 I believe. He wasn't a comic book collector, he just speculated and never read a comic book. He saw a friend buying comics and asked him why and that's what he was doing. Mark just went hardcore doing that. With run books of existing titles like Superman, Batman and hulk, he seemed to only buy one copy, while earlier titles like Demon etc he bought multiples of issues, not just issue 1 but up to issue 12. There wasn't really much of a pattern as there were only 4 copies I believe of New Gods 1 yet 100 copies of demon 1 and the shadow 1. Starting around 1971 up to 1976. Though there was a run of Ironman 1-up and Sub-mariner 1- up. And there were half a dozen timely golden age books around vg-fn in this collection. Unfortunately I didn't see them. The collection is from Washington State and is being sold around the country. And there are collectors from out of state and country coming in and walking out with loads of books. There was no hulk 181, house of secrets 92. But there was other bronze age keys in the collection. Sometimes just a single copy, other times a handful to a bakers dozen. I think it's one of the best bronze age collections ever. But that's my opinion. |

And it wasn't just the comics. It was also treasuries he bought and magazines. 15 uncirculated copies of Superman vs spiderman. I had to grab a copy. And there were other magazines like Look at this high grade uncirculated black cover. Tales of the zombie, 60 copies. Just crazy I bought a second copy to read. At the price of $55 plus tax I think. Why not. A real weird time capsule of comics, magazines and treasuries. |
