CBCS Page Quality: Exceptional White...Any Others?20807

I don't believe this....and I know you don't care that I don't believe this. GAC private msg quote post Address this user
I'm not really a big believer or fan of Page Quality in comics...for me if its Off White or higher, I'm fine....I even have a few Cream Page books...it doesn't bother me.

I have only one CBCS Exceptional White Pages book.

Anyone else have any CBCS Exceptional White Pages books?

WTH... so, they're white. I like that about as much as I like "CVA EXCEPTIONAL!"
Useless.

What bothers me more than anything is that it should be Exceptionally White.

If you were to use it in a sentence, it would be, "Those pages are exceptionally white."

It would not be, "Those pages are exceptional white."

Drives me nuts.

It wouldn't buy a book with that page designation based on that alone.

When they came out GI Joe ARAH #1 had the whitest pages I had ever seen. And it was every copy.

What exactly is exceptionally white? If they aren’t white then they are off white… right?

Maybe it should be changed to
Really white!
Sort of white
Kind of white
Not white

white

"White" isn't a color, it's a window with a high and low end. Pre-1975 books that have pages that are perfectly bone-white get the designation "Exceptional White."

I'm not a fan of the word chosen to represent the designation, but it is a legitimate identifier.

This might help explain it...

If I were to sell any of my "Exceptional White" comic books I would want a higher price. I only have (3) with "Exceptional White" on the label. The only other's that I've seen are mine and what others posted on this post.

I don’t have any and the books I’ve seen are in relation to the era as Steve pointed out. A white pages silver or golden is impressive enough, but that “exceptional” is a wow factor that would make me pay a bit more for a CBCS slab. A CGC I’d take with a grain of salt for my own reasons. It is a designation that I’d have to trust is given with no indication of restoration and actually checked for whitening. Exceptional white has been around longer than 9.9 10.0 and is still uncommon so I’d be wary when EW becomes a norm as I am with 9.9/10.0 commonality. 9.9/10.0 is legitimate, but I think given out in exchange for submissions. Every roll of scratch off has winners; how many you win depends on how many you buy to increase your odds. If *coughCGCcough* gives out more 9.9/10.0s the more you will gamble if your chasing grades. I have no facts to back that statement, but if the shoe fits…

The OWL Card! I have that somewhere around. When I tried using it I couldn't determine properly were each comic landed.

The page color designation has the potential to be extremely simple to objectively measure.

You can use a camera and software. Maintain consistent lighting and use a reference card (or not, depending on your sensor/software).

Then it is just a question of consistency of color on pages. There my assumption is you can take the “worst” score on a page and make that the grade or do some blended/weighted approach.

Either way, it is really easy to automate this and avoid most subjectivity.

The biggest issue is lack of comparability and data. Clearly a differentiation approach by CBCS vs CGC. Similar, I think, to how BGS uses their highest graded card score.

@southerncross - Those white pages are truly exceptional for a comic that old.

I personally think the eva exceptional is paid garbage.

That said, I actually like the EW designation. I liked it before I ever attained one. When using the Owl Chart and applying to comics that are basically 5 decades or older, I think there is true relevancy and discernibility.

Hence the name (exceptional) 👍

It is a sweet book and I didn't bother to get it pressed.

But there was ink transfer from the book sitting in a stack of Demon 1s for five decades.
I was hoping CBCS didn't notice it but they did. 😭

@Studley_Dudley LOL! If that was directed toward me, I was just kidding around. I think the original Owl Card came out in '92. I too have one around here somewhere. It is obsolete now but, I really haven't seen an updated one with "Exceptional White".
It makes since though with the better quality and different types of paper available for printing.
@SteveRicketts is the expert so he is the "go-to" guy.

I was NOT kidding about CVA though. To me, it's a gimmick and useless.

I don't mind it and I understand why they do it. Some collectors only want White pages.

Because PQ is a range even within its designation, some designated whites are whiter or not as white as other whites. Exceptional white is merely saying, this book's white pages are whiter than average/normal white and a notation was warranted.

Back to seeing books with Exceptional White pages.

Two Adventure Comics that I have owned for many decades and submitted to CBCS (no pressing either, @southerncross):

I was happy to see the page quality on the above book, but extremely disappointed that the label doesn’t state it’s the 1st appearance of Lightning Lass.

So, I don't particularly care about page quality of slabbed books (I am not looking at them, anyway), but it is interesting to think about what this tells us about the treatment the book received up to the point that it was graded.

Demon 2, once again without a press.

Now some inside pics before slabbing.

Since cgc have 10-11 copies in 9.8 in their census and CBCS only has my copy in 9.8.

Is my copy the highest graded because of page quality 🤔

Jokes aside it's a nice book and one that I got graded earlier this year.
