The last one I remember was when Brian Ketterer got back a New Mutants 98 in 10.0. That staple rub in itself should be enough to keep that book out of 9.9 contention. Not to mention the slight miscut/miswrap. My CBCS 9.6 doesn't even have front cover staple rubs. I think I prefer it to the 9.9. Stunts like these are not circumspect at all. Nope, nothing to see here. ![]() |

Those people only send their books to CGC, prescreen or not. CGC isn't convincing them to submit to CGC, they already do. The 9.9 pre-screen isn't going to be used by the typical comic-book collector. |

May not look like a 9.9 but could be a very nice 9.8. I’m not a 9.8 buyer, never mind giving a rats ass about a 9.9… but not sure how some people compare 9.6 vs 9.8 or 9.9 based on less-than-ideal images. For me to judge a 9.9 I’d need to see that book in person (or very high res images) and then compare vs a random sampling of perhaps 10 or 20 9.8 graded books (in-hand or very high res images). If the 9.9 appears to have fewer defects than ALL of my random sample of 9.8 books, then I’d say it might be a 9.9… |

Quote:Originally Posted by Sigur_Ros Agreed. Ultimately what this drives beyond bulk “from the printer” modern submissions are resubs from people who feel their copies are exceptional / could be improved with a press. But there will also be lottery players … with modern books that are virtually worthless except in a 9.9… personally those 9.9s should still be “worthless”… in my eyes… but opinions clearly differ. There will be irrational submissions and CGC is clearly trying to motivate some of that behavior too. |

Makes sense now that I think more about it. Why can't staple pressure that results in very observable loss of color not be a 9.9? They create the scam. So if that is the criteria within the scam, then 9.9 it is. |

I just noticed the QES sticker. qescomics.com/ Which is also owned by the owner of the book. A book can have a 9.6 NM perfect spine and a rather unfortunate tear on the back cover. With third-party labels, that book sits at 7.0, and its flawless spine ceases to exist. Our goal is to fix that problem, which is why we've come up with QES. At QES, every book that gets submitted will be carefully evaluated in order to find its superior features, rather than allowing shortcomings to define its condition. This explains everything. Perhaps the cgc ignored the shortcomings when they gave it a 9.9 as well. |

I'm sorry but I think that is another way for CGC to confuse the customer and justify their poor grading. With that logic Dr. Watson's book would be a 10. The color on his book is far superior to that 9.9. Any flaws his book has would be overridden by the right off the press color. I don't agree with their QES philosophy. It's taking away a definitive way of determining a grade and making it subjective. Anyone can look at a book and say, "You know what, I don't care about that water stain on the back. That book is perfect. Give it a 9.8". When you allow a person to bypass the flaws on a grade you diminish the true grade of a book. I do think they could give a subjective grade and say that the book is a 9.6 but with its superior cover we think it's worth the same as a 9.8. We do that all the time when we look at graded books. Would you rather have Dr. Watson's 9.6 or the 9.9. I'll take the 9.6 because it looks sooo much better than that 9.9. |

No grader notes? What is the defect that keeps it from a 10? The staple by Nigjtcrawler's hip: it's not broken through? But if I can see it, is it a loss of color? I'm not h8ing, it's a gorgeous book. I just have huge concerns with professional grading right now. |

9.9s are the new 9.8s: they are all over eBay now. Search Batman 9.9 or Harley Quinn 9.9; you will get 30+ listings. This never used to happen. CGC has changed their grading standards.

9.9s are the equivalent of a sub-section of the Qualified grade without getting the green label. Take a 9.8 book...ignore the flaw and call it a 9.9.

I'm not saying they haven't lowered their standards. It seems like they have. I like how CBCS has no hesitancy to give a 9.9 to a book that deserves it. That's how it should be. I think maybe CGC is just coming around to that. But also, the quality of books is just higher than it used to be. The production, not the writing. |

I swear this is a badly scripted movie that would never get greenlit because it wouldn't be believable. I thought selling grades and stabbing clear plastic would be the final nail and was wrong, but man if CGC manages to crash both the 9.8 market and the 9.9 market at the same time, that's going to show a special kind of stupid that could become a case study for the future. The big problem is now a lot of people doubt 9.9s, and while there were a few before, Ebay is already getting flooded as it's been pointed out. There was already a sizable group of doubters of the 9.8/9.6 gap and that just got a lot bigger too. I can't see any long term outcome on the graded market from this other than bad, bad, bad. |

239 9.8s over the span of almost 25 years Video on how to pre-screen with a hint and a nod to 9.9s Hyper focus and discussions about 9.9 and hint & nods towards that direction starting with Nelson Finally, a 9.9 of a major key occurs after 239 attempts and 25 years Seems fine to me. And someone(s) will defend this Bankman-Fried masquerading as a business entity. They need to change from CGC to CBF (Comic Bankman Fried) Not just a joke; not just a scam, but a framework revision to the very scam. Why would anyone be upset. I just don't understand it ![]() |
