Comics what do you prefer? MORE comics or more "expensive" comics so LESS comics.

Since i started 2 years ago i collected only books between 1987-2011, so stuff is relatively cheap and you can easily create a huge collection with limited budget... 2 weeks ago i made the craziest decision of my life and get ride of a run of almost 300 books from a serie which had fewer importance for me than my other ones, even if i really liked all these books. And all of it is gone to buy only 1 book, probably my absolute graail, i dont received the book for the moment (shipping from US to Switzerland take long time) so its something totally new for me and i still not really realize what i did but i think i took a good decision...
Anyway... the question was what do you prefer? Are you always trying to get tons of books at the lowest you can and complete some big affordable runs or do you prefer to limit yourself and buy less but big keys books who need time to get?
Or are you between the two //

I’ve always been a “buy what you love” guy, but with almost 16,000 comics acquired over the last 40+ years I’m starting to prepare myself to offload the bulk of my collection and likely only keep Bronze Age or earlier and Batman / Detectove unless it’s something especially sentimental. So, turning into a “more value, less books” phase.

Unfortunately, 90% of the value in my collection is what I want to keep. Haven’t decided whether I want to try and sell online (probably not), have a “all comics $1-$5” garage sale (or booth at a small local con) or offload in bulk to one of the local stores that buy collections.

Too many comics. I have them stashed ever which where. Now I acquire fewer but more meaningful books.

kind of both. lately (since late last year) but been buying digital comics when $2. but been doing it more collector's/investment sake. been buying graded comics off mycomicshop. bought 4. 2 really are random cheap ones but one is a key issue but not worth a lot (1st appearance of Amethyst)

I have a fairly large collection from collecting through the 90s and oughts. Unfortunately they are all right now in a different country so I cannot even access them. Shipping to the US would be a bear but there are probably some things in there worth something I am willing to get rid of. Just a ton of tightly packed boxes. That would also take time to work through. As I get older, it just makes sense to get rid of things because life is not just about accumulating stuff constantly without end.

Much like the Star Trek episode "The Trouble With Tribbles" I have accumulated way too many comic books over the years and now prefer to focus more on quality over quantity.

This is currently my best book:

I recently reduced the asking price.

I started collecting 15 years ago, and first decided on my goals. An income stream for retirement, which meant buying keys and pre code, all Bronze Age or earlier. I always bought boxes of show leftovers or other dreck from dealers and sold that slowly at a profit to pay for books I like, so the hobby paid for itself after the seed money I started with.
Now that I am retired I have whittled my core collection down to about 200 graded, 2,000 raw, all of which I find either interesting or valuable as investments, and have a hard time letting go of. I think that is about as far as I am willing to shrink. Luckily I still have several thousand more common books that I sell, mainly on EBay.
Everybody has different goals, and circumstances do change.

I am firmly in the “more” camp, although I do acknowledge the storage issues inherent in owning more. My system has evolved into this: the largest percentage of actual comics that I own are 1980s books (currently about 15 long boxes and 20 short boxes). Golden and silver age I mostly have in hardcovers, bound volumes or tpbs (5 full bookcases worth). This is pretty much the limit of what I can reasonably store, give or take a few short boxes. That is why I have branched out into the world of digital comics and kindle books. I probably have another 12,000 comics stored in the cloud or on my kindle. Digital comics allow me to own more comics than I can possibly otherwise store!

Like many here I have been at this too long (only 50). I now have 9500 and closing in on 10k books. I still like the stories so I buy current issues...but fewer and fewer.
Last year I sold a few books to buy a grail. I think that will be the formula for a few years before I liquidate the majority of my collection

I have a few years and a couple thousand more books on you but, I love your way of thinking. That's a great formula!

Depends. I have only been collecting since the late 70s, and for most of that time I wasn't really "collecting" but rather accumulating what I read.

Not long after getting married, my wife and I both stepped away from comics. Not for any real reason, just became busy with other things. Then the kid came along and we learned what busy really meant.

Now he's old enough that he doesn't have to be constantly monitored, and I am rationalizing our accumulation and curating it into a collection that reflects both of our interests. I am once again accumulating books as I read them, but they no longer stay in the collection unless they are particularly loved or fit with existing themes. I buy a lot more books these days for the cover art alone, and a lot fewer books over all than I used to. We are currently at 28 long boxes and 4 (full) slab boxes. I would like to keep that from growing beyond 30 long boxes long term. I am working on some big runs I would like to complete: the 90s Sandman (only four or five books to go), G.I. Combat (only 200 or so books to go). I have several large runs I won't let go, and a few 5-10 issue runs I would like to have. But even so, most of these books aren't really what I consider expensive (with some exceptions in that G.I. Combat run).

So it's not really a "quantity" versus "price" thing for me, but rather "quantity" versus "enjoyment value."

I’m working on completing Spawn 1-300, deadpool and Incredible Hulk. Hulk will be the biggest challenge with many high value issues. I used to buy anything in good condition that looked interesting and now I’m more selective toward keys or a book to add to a run.

I don't have much space (if any) to store more boxes so I'm purchasing fewer and fewer comics as time goes by. I love them but I'm downsizing considerably.

What @SpiderTim said. Our collection of 30+ long boxes (all ungraded) is now down to 12 short boxes (mostly graded) and the compression continues.

From the department of "If I knew THEN what I know NOW", I would have focused on collecting fewer titles, skipped annuals and one-shots, spin-off character titles, etc and just focused on core titles of my favorite characters, I would have had better opportunities and affordability to get key books.

I am now buying almost exclusively slabbed books. I am, what I would consider a low to mid-grade collector. I am enjoying buying books that have cover art that I really enjoy. So I am buying less but more expensive and having fun at the same time. So physically, I am actually taking up more "per book" space, since I am buying slabbed, but I am enjoying my books more even though it is fewer. One point I forgot to make, once I find a book I want,I look for (and almost always find) a bargain. I try and buy for at least 30 percent below FMV. The hunt and find are the best part. To actually answer the original question. I am way more selective, so buying less. I will let my kids decide what to do with the books once I'm gone.

I’m in the middle, I only have two long box’s plus a empty third waiting for more cash flow. But I have both comics worth a couple hundred bucks which is alot to me cause I bought them for 1.50 off the rack as a kid and I have some that never grew in price and I only got them as part of a lump buy every one has there reason why they buy what they do. Example when I got back into collecting comics, I was really obsessed with getting all the alternative covers or variance but thanks to this website I basically found out I was wasting my money and they weren’t gonna be worth anything so now I only get them for like the cover, and it has saved me some money, thankful to the guys on here for that direction.
I personally still go back-and-forth on whether I want to slab. Actually I do wanna slab but the price is just prohibitive considering a comic might be worth 250 and then by the time I send it out pay for the shipping and handling , Insurance and maybe pressing, and sent back to me. I’ve just basically paid for what it’s worth especially if I’m not gonna sell it make any money off of it so i’d only slab it for display, or if I thought it needed severe protection from the elements, like the dust and my cat lol.
My advice stay away from gimmicks and only collect what you love. Don’t try to guess what is going to be valuable in the future or brake your bank on something you don’t really care for as a status symbol
