Looking For Advice on Star Trek Trinkets20418

It's like the Roach Motel for comic collectors. chester15 private msg quote post Address this user
Looking for some help from toy collectors.

I have a 1996 STNG Klingon communicator badge that is in/on its plastic holder. It came with batteries inside, pull the tab to activate, even though still in the package (bad idea). The tab is gone, the batteries presumably dead, no idea of the inside condition of the battery compartment or the batteries themselves. Button batteries. Should I sell it (on eBay) as is, or should I open it to know what I am selling? Does the collector want this to be still in the package, or since it involves batteries of unknown status, removed for better storage?

If I sell it as a collectible NOS, and state that if you open it, you own it, no returns, I presume eBay will force the return anyway. A little concerned about the "retail swap", where someone buys it to upgrade their non-working piece, returns the dead one. No idea if that can be thwarted.

I also have 2 1995 Tricorder keychains, original Star Trek, same situation but these did not have a tab you could pull without opening the blister pack. Again, no knowledge of the batteries or compartment, but I would presume they are dead, hopefully not leaking.

Any advice or help on how to handle these would be appreciated.

Wish I had the money to alleviate your problem. Unfortunately I have no viable advice.

My friends who run a toy store always leave things in the box if it's still sealed. For something like what you have, they say "of course the batteries are probably dead", but everyone should understand that isn't your fault because the box is sealed. If the box is not sealed, I would neatly take things out and test them before you list it. But then I would put it back because collectables in the box are more appealing than not.

As far as people being dishonest on eBay, you have that problem regardless. You could try selling them at a different auction place but you may not get as good a deal.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. These are not in boxes, but blister packs. Opening them involves cutting along the perimeter of the pack to make a big enough opening to get the keychain or badge out. That will kind of wreck the packaging, so I guess I will leave them as is, see what happens.

Ah. Same idea though. Leave the pack alone as long as the bubble is sealed. It should make your life easier when you list it on eBay that way. Someone can always lie and say it wasn't sealed when it arrived at their house, but that buyer was always going to cheat you.

I think I found them after searching for a pic. It's a clamshell package. Only way to get in is cut the package. If you want to sell, sell as is, unknown on battery condition; although that will probably limit the sale price.

Is it this one? I used to have all of them but this is the last one I have. All of the ones I sold were still sealed and new but the batteries were dead.
I just noted that they were dead and didn't have any problems. It's pretty common with stuff like this

Yes, it's a clamshell for the Communicator badge, a blister pack for the keychains, neither accessed without destruction. I will list them as you have described, eventually. Thanks for taking the time to look into it.

Says IPI from Colorado on the back, no brand ID on the front. Probably from Spencer Gifts. Are people familiar with Spencer Gifts? It was in every mall around here, but I don't know if it was a national chain.

Spencer's is correct 👌 I used to get all kinds of cool stuff there. One of my favorites was the black light posters

Yes, your photos are correct for what I have, although your clamshell is nice and clear, mine has yellowed a bit.

Loved Spencer's. Always had to stop in to see what was "trending". They were on the cutting edge of pop culture.
