Any thoughts on the following??? Beckett announces controversial new grading service for manga Does the manga market need a certification, grading and preservation service? ![]() clickable text A couple of complaints are, "While I'm happy a lot of the community is against this, I worry that this will cause market manipulation thus provoking non-collectors to inflate the value of manga. It happened with Pokemon cards, comics and games. It's not great when people that aren't hobbyists get involved..." and "I'd say this is only interesting for preserving manga volumes that are autographed, otherwise, completely defeats the purpose of collecting manga [for mel (reading the damn books)". |

It did strike me as silly when I read about this. Feel the same way about VHS grading and video game grading though.

I think it's cool. I do wonder how much demand there is for it though.

I have some old out of print stuff that I may consider grading but will stay in the personal collection. I liken this to Pulps, there will be niche titles/issues that demand some value but most books will be worth less than grading fees once the initial interest dies down.

It is the future that is now here. "Manga are Japanese comic books that serve as the source material for animated cartoon shows and movies, called anime. Manga reached record sales numbers in 2020, earning an estimated $5.6 billion in Japan alone, according to Megan Peters. Meanwhile, that same year American comics earned $1.28 billion in North America, according to a joint survey by ICv2 and Comichron. Just one year later in 2021, comic books generated a total of $2.075 billion in America, with manga making up $1.47 billion of that total. This means that Japanese manga is not only more profitable in Japan, but even in America they are selling better than American comics." Japanese manga is dominating American comics. |

@Jesse_O Wow! Personally, I had no idea it generated that much money! It was never really my thing. My kids and grandkids do like it. I just never saw the appeal. I guess it's just another sign I'm getting old lol!

Grading is for collectibles. If it's collectable, it can be graded.

this reminds me of a great Home Improvement (Tim Allen) episode > https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0603453/ everything in the collectible store had "doubled in value since he bought it". He also had a flapjack pan signed by Bjorn Borg (or someone ridiculous) - also doubled in value since he bought it. I guess it's how far do you want to take it? ![]() |

It was bound to happen. Since the Crappy Grading Company started grading invisible comics and want to get into pulps (if they haven't started already), why shouldn't CBCS get in on the manga books? The shit well outperforms the American comic book market and there aren't a bunch of self-loathing pity hires in the manga field.

Currently Beckett is only grading the equivalent of manga collected TBPs. In another thread, on this site, they mentioned grading the weekly magazines in the near future. These would be worth grading. As a few people have said, manga has surpassed the American comic book market and people who came up watching anime and being introduced to manga now have disposable income. You’d be surprised of the value of some of the first appearances and serializations. These weekly magazines were printed in shite paper and were meant to be tossed after ready. I think it’s impressive that a series is published weekly and is put out in a weekly magazine with other 16-40 page series for something around a few dollars. Meanwhile we pay $4.99 for 16 pages if we’re lucky. |
