This time of year again.

What are your comic book goals for 2024.

Some of you may remember that last year one of mine was WDCS #4 complimentary variant. One came to market at $15k. I did follows it and was about to buy it when it went down to $3500 but someone beat me.

My biggest purchase of 2023 was this FF #1

For 2024 my goal is just to improve the quality of my collection through continuous upgrading and sell of some of the less desired books of mine.

What are your goals?

No sales contemplated and only small number of additions to my small collection, as usual. List looks something like this:

More Fun Comics 31
Action Comics 252
Adventure Comics 247
Famous Funnies 214
Amazing Fantasy 15

Just secured a copy of Adv Comics 247 overnight. Several AC 252 are up for auction this / next week so reasonable hope there. Still willing to pay a bounty for a More Fun 31 - by far my most difficult search.

Honestly have all my comic grails. Will upgrade for reasonable prices. Buy some spec books at reasonable prices. But focusing on the card collations and the coins. Have one more coin to get to finish off my grails. 7 more card to finish off those grails.

1. Continue reducing the volume of the personal collection. (The kids are on their own!)
2. Generate a bit of income for some house projects.
3. Maybe pick up another Timely when the time is right.

My goals are consistent with what they have been for the last couple of years: read more and buy less! I have nearly worked my way through reading 1984 and my primary buying focus will be to fill up any holes in 1985 as I get ready to read that year. I am also trying to pare down my 1986-1989 list when I get a chance to hit the dollar boxes at shows. I would love to add a few more Harvey bound file sets if I had opportunity. I only need one volume to complete the year 1956 and one to complete 1958. Unfortunately these only exist in the low single digits and the odds of either volume actually hitting the market are somewhere between slim and none. I do have my feelers out and my eyes open.

I have no goals. I never know which book within my collecting range will catch my attention. I tend to fixate on a certain issue until I find one that pushes my buttons, but not to the preclusion of another book that would help complete the run.

There's a book on ComicLink that I've watched for the better part of a year. I even made an offer on it, but the seller didn't accept. I would probably pay the asking price, but it needs a back cover scan and a better scan in general. It baffles me why someone would ask hundreds or thousands of dollars for a book and present it with poor quality pictures.

Not too many items on my want list. Continue to complete my ASM run, with hopefully 129 finally getting crossed off my list. I will probably upgrade a few of my SA Adventure Comics if I see higher grade copies available at decent prices. I would also like to add a couple of GA books if possible. Could this be the year I pickup another EC book, a classic GGA cover, or a cover by an iconic GA artist (Shomburg, Whitman, Baker, Cole, etc.)?
Like others, I need to stop dragging my feet and reduce volume. I plan on retiring at the end of this school year, and will hopefully have more time and energy (but also less money) to sort, organize, and manage my collection.

Nothing specific. I’m always happy to see what I stumble across & can’t pass up throughout the year.

That said, I’d be happy with any ONE of the following:

ASM #2, #4, #6 or #14 (4.0 minimum) really, any issues of ASM I’m missing below #20, but those are the main ones I’d like to grab.

TMNT #1 (2nd or 3rd print, VF or better)

Hulk #181 (6.0 range)

Possibly add Katey Sagal’s signature to my Futurama #1.

I absolutely need to reduce the volume of books I have. That's the goal. I will probably take them to my LCBS and sell them for pennies on the dollar. It is what it is.

Spend less money on comics. It would be a goal if I can accomplish. every time I turn around it seems I want to buy a comic. Buy less comics online if I could stay off line and not look at comics that I don’t have that would definitely help me with spending less money on comics. Sure I still want to collect comics and finish my runs and series I am working on but I don’t need to be in a rush to.

After 5 years of retirement hope to continue to whittle the pile eventually to around 200 graded, around 1,000 not before I get too old. That might be too few as I still add occasional books that catch my fancy, but my goal is just keep the ones I like the best for value and/or beauty.

Decades ago, I read one of those clever sayings it was "happiness is not a destination, it's a way of traveling." 2020-2021 kind of took the journey out of collecting for lots of us. Like it, click it, package arrives in the mail. I find that my enjoyment from owning a comic starts to diminish a couple days after I've opened the package. In 2024 I want to continue bringing the journey back into collecting. More hunting and buying in person. Less online slabs, more in-person raw. More books that aren't likely to ever end up in slabs or be resold.

I have been collecting any pre code books I can find. Especially gga books. Those are expensive so it's a search for low cost ones at thrift stores and low bid auctions. Also continue my lower number disney books. If I had to say one book it's the first scrooge appearance.

My 2024 goals are to:

• continue to clean and press my 10k collection in order to sell

• submit keys that I want to sell for grading to get a higher return

• build up funds in order to purchase: ASM #50 graded 6.5 or better; Detective Comics #411 8.5 or better; any other missing books to fill in the gaps.

Uncanny X-Men #50
Uncanny X-Men #101
Conan the Barbarian #1

These are my main goals for this year as well as other more minor keys. Was super close on pulling the trigger on the X-Men 50 a few days ago, but decided to hold out for a nicer copy or better deal. The one I saw was a 6.0 but I was hoping for something more in the 7.0-8.0 range.

I'll be looking to complete a comic book collecting list that I made, some of them are allusive, some I'm not quite ready to drop the dime and pull the trigger. I'm a month behind on going to my LCS, planning on going to catch up soon. I have a short box of my LCS books, from this year, I need to get back to reading. Been a few weeks.

Comic Legends: Was Action Comics #1 Really Released on April 18th?
In the latest Comic Book Legends Revealed, discover whether Action Comics #1 really came out on April 18th!
BY BRIAN CRONIN
PUBLISHED APR 23, 2018

Welcome to Comic Book Legends Revealed! This is the six hundred and seventy-sixth week where we examine comic book legends and whether they are true or false.

NOTE: I noticed that the the CSBG Twitter page was nearing 10,000 followers. If we hit 10,050 followers on the the CSBG Twitter page then I'll do a BONUS edition of Comic Book Legends Revealed during the week that we hit 10,050. So three more legends! Sounds like a great deal, right?

Click here for Part 1 of this week's all-Superman legends. Click here for Part 2 of this week's all-Superman legends.

COMIC LEGEND:

Action Comics #1 was released on April 18, 1938.

STATUS:

Appears to be false

Reader Jesse F. tweeted to me the other day, "Don't know if this is Legends-worthy, but I saw a lot of talk on Wednesday of April 18t being the actual day of ACTION #1's release 80 years ago and... I don't think I believe that. I may be misinformed, but I'd heard the exact date of release was lost, just a range of a few weeks. Also, the exact date just happens to fall on a Wednesday? I mean, I'm sure it's in the ballpark, but is it really the exact day?"

I initially responded that it's fair to say that, after a number of years, the exact on-sale dates tend to be lost to history. In the case of Action Comics #1, however, we actually have a shockingly "of the time" resources for the release date, as National Allied Publications (the company that eventually became DC Comics) actually sued another company for the release of a comic book by Fox Publications that National believed infringed on their Superman copyright. The lawsuit took place in 1939 and in the lawsuit, Jack Liebowitz recalled the release date of Action Comics #1:

Leibowitz: “I can explain that first issue. We put that out April 18 and we left it on sale for about 6 weeks. The next on-sale date was about May 25, and thereafter it was published about that time so there was only a month’s difference after that time.”

Now, when a guy tries to recall an on-sale date 10 years later, I'm wary, but when a guy has a specific date just a year later, I tend to believe it and that's what I told Jesse on Twitter.

However, I was thinking more about it and I was wondering about WHERE, exactly, Liebowitz got that date and looking into it, I see the problem.

You see, Liebowitz got the date from National's records at the time (as they reported them to the Library of Congress), but National's records were for COPYRIGHT DATES, not the on-sale date.

It would be decades before National would actually report the on-sale dates of their books to the Library of Congress.

So April 18, 1938 is when National received the copyright date for Action Comics #1. That, though, is categorically NOT when the comic book was actually released into stores. Typically speaking, it would be a couple of weeks after the copyright date. We know that there are copies of Action Comics #1 that were hand-dated in late April (that is, someone wrote in pencil in the actual copy something like 4/26/38 for the store's own records), meaning that allegedly, those stores did receive their books at the end of April, but that is not exactly proof (as who knows when the person actually wrote the dates on the book?), but it does suggest that there were some copies in stores by the end of April (which makes sense, as back then, different stores in different parts of the country got their deliveries on different schedules).

The most likely release date, though, is probably May 3, 1938, as theorized by Mike Voiles of the always amazing (so amazing that it is even in the title), Mike's Amazing World, who noted that Action Comics was released early in the month at the time and since they were released on Tuesdays, the first Tuesday in May in 1938 was May 3 and hence, May 3, 1938.

Could Mike be slightly off? Perhaps, but the main thing is that whenever the comic was actually released, it definitely was NOT on April 18, 1938.

Thanks to Jesse for the question and thanks to Mike for the information!

Still hunting the last 4 TTA between 70-101 that are pedigrees.

And just pick up books that look cool that I'm comfortable buying.

Not strictly a comic book goal

Get a sketch in my sketchbook - I think last year was the first in a long time I did not get a sketch

Iron Man 1 9.0
Space Family Robinson #1 7.0?

always Rangers Comics, Planet Comics etc.

In honesty though unless I sell a few books I think these are off the table for 2024 as I made a decent purchase right at the end of 2023
