Comic books that are submitted in the poly-bag are removed and graded. The poly-bag and any contents within are returned to the customer separately from the graded book. I spoke with West this morning and received this summarized explanation: Usually the poly bags are larger than the book within, any many times, are also not clear enough to see the book inside. This makes grading the book inside the bag impossible, and also causes issues slabbing the book within the larger bag. The Batman #10 posted here is interesting because in all the photos I am finding online, the factory seal is more like like the one below (a clear poly-bag- larger than the comic, as opposed to shrink wrap). Unsure if the photo @RRO provided is 3rd party shrink wrap or not. To my knowledge this is the accepted practice within the comic book industry. There are many other reasons not to leave them in the bag (bends and such), but I won't go too deep into that now. As for the gaming modules, though I am not one of the graders who handles these- I was told most of the shrink wrap is form fitting, and allows you to see the book inside. They are not only grading the book, but also assigning the letter grade to the condition of the shrink wrap (as you can see on the label). Beckett grades VHS tapes similarly, and both take measures to ensure the shrink wrap is not 3rd party or post manufacturing. |

@Wade_Story Can gaming modules be dropped off at the CBCS booth at a comic convention and are the grading prices the same as magazine grading?

@southerncross Yes to both! Maybe just refer to the photo in this thread if the rep at the booth isn't familiar with those submissions. Pricing is the same as magazines for pressing as well.

@RRO Type of seal (seal pattern) and material used are a couple of good indicators. I can't get too in depth on this without getting into trouble for divulging trade secrets, unfortunately. That was the only rule they gave me when I started this thread! I apologize if this is not satisfactory enough to answer your question. |

I'm not sure I understand. Let me see if I get this right... The slabbed D&D book pictured is in shrinkwrap. CBCS says (and correct me if this is incorrect) they remove the shrinkwrap to grade the book. (This makes perfect sense because the inside pages have to be inspected also) So, seeing as how it's in shrinkwrap (while in a slab), that must mean that CBCS re-shrinkwrapped it just before encapsulating it. I must've to a wrong turn somewhere, because this just doesn't compute. |

There has been a lot of "shrinkwrap" talk in some of the online discussion groups for RPG materials. Both CBCS and "the guys in Florida" grade RPG materials in shrink. They do NOT remove the book from SW to grade (that would be dumb). The book is graded "through" the shrink (as indicated in the picture posted) and a letter grade is assigned to the wrap. The "guys in Florida" follow the same process, though they started doing it several months after CBCS, and they use a slightly different scale for grading shrink (their highest grade is 'A++'... whatever that means, while CBCS starts at 'A+'). |

My questions still need to be answered. How does anyone know what's inside the box or book and if it's a game or video does it still work? And if it's a comic book, how do we know it's not the cover wrapped around something else? For me, I'll skip buying anything collectible in shrink wrap. Unless I know what's in it. |

So the inside pages could be completely FUBARed (tears, scribbling, coupons cut, etc)?

Quote:Originally Posted by Rafel I don't think grading has any concern about if a game or VHS works. People don't get something encased in plastic with a condition grade with a plan to open it up and use it. I do think it's a fair question to wonder how grading companies address the issue of manufacturing defects. If it's never out of the shrinkwrap, even the manufacturer-verified shrinkwrap, there could still be something wrong with the book. |

Same goes for cards. The sealed "security" shrink wrap has been used for MANY years and deems the contents as original and unopened. It would be nice for DC and Marvel to do the same but I guess the poly bags are more cost-effective and easier. Besides, if you shrink wrap a comic book, you would have to add a backer board (I would think) or risk the chance of damaging the corners. |

Quote:Originally Posted by dosselmeyer So help me understand this. If the seal is deemed authentic, the insides are deemed what, perfect? The pictured D&D book has a grade of 7.5 ... did the interior play any part of that grade? You used the word 'assume' in your post. It would appear that if any assuming was done, it would've been done by the grader(s). It also has a page quality of 'white'. Could somebody please tell me how that was determined? |
