2024 New Year Predictions20288

Forum Crier OGJackster private msg quote post Address this user
I may be way off on this but, it seems the the pendulum is swinging back in the other direction in the comic book market. Values have dropped and the glory years of the industry seem to be on the decline. The catalyst is the TV and movie industry which seems to drive the interest in superheroes and other comic-based movies. Now it seems people have just gotten tired of poorly made movies by DC and Marvel (WB and Disney) and are ready to move on.

So my prediction is that fewer "superhero" movies will further the decline of the value of comic books and collectibles, bringing the market back down to where it was a few years ago. On the bright side, hopefully, key books will be more affordable for collectors to attain for their collection.

What's your predictions?

Definitely, hoping for more affordable key books.

Also, hoping cbcs takes control of the market.

I predict I stop buying new monthly floppies by the end of 2024. I can only take so much of the self-loathing, industry-hating jerkoffs that Marvel and DC continue to hire instead of paying the real talent.

The Super-hero 1st-appearance era was narrow but deep. Values increased significantly but remained focused on a few hundred books. Seems the market interest has shifted post-super-hero to include Horror, above-average covers, and particular artists. Most of us are just now becoming aware of, and interested in, books that we had never considered or even taken notice of before. I predict that 2024 demand may not significantly increase values but it will broaden out to include thousands of older books, not just a few hundred.

I predict that dozens of forum members will have happy birthday cakes next to their names tonight, even though it’s not their birthdays tomorrow. I also predict that very few will take the time to reset their birthdays to the correct date, so the same thing will just keep happening year after year.

I too feel that way I dont know if it’s editorial and the higher ups that make the writers fallow a set of plots to write around or what but a lot of the floppies fall short of expectations I think it’s my expectations that I am going to get a good cleaver fun story. I shouldn’t have any expectations. Just feels like I am buying comics for the cover art sometimes and then once you find something you like they go ahead and stop it after 20 or 30 issues just to reboot it four months later because number ones sell

Short Boxed predictions 2024 I think many forum members nailed it.

To kick off the year, we’re going to hit you with some final thoughts from your fellow community members and the Shortboxed staff. We reached out to Shortboxed dealers, members of our staff, and our social media and Discord community and asked “What are your predictions for the hobby in 2024?”

We got a ton of great stuff, so we summarized the main themes and included the responses to check out as you recover from your New Year’s Eve parties.

Market Correction:

Continued price drops, especially for non-key issues and recent releases.

Potential plateauing or further decline due to economic factors and waning hype.

Shift towards "grail" and mega-key books as investors seek higher returns.

Golden Age and Pulps:

The potential influx of collectors seeking value and adventure in older eras.

Pulps are the "Wild West" of collecting, offering excitement and risk.

Restored books gaining acceptance as viable alternatives to high-priced originals.

Movie and TV Influence:

Short-term spikes in prices for characters featured in upcoming media adaptations.

Potential for disillusionment with frequent event comics and reboots.

The long-term impact of negative reception on future comic sales.

Industry Challenges:

AI writing potentially creates low-quality content and saturates the market.

Indie comics facing plateauing sales due to declining film/TV optioning hype.

Comic shops potentially struggling in a weak economy.

Silver Linings:

Lower prices offering entry points for new collectors.

Opportunity for rediscovering gems in underappreciated genres like Bronze Age horror.

Potential for short, focused series offering greater reader satisfaction.

Overall Sentiment:

It’s safe to say that the contributions we received from the Community and Staff can be summarized like this: in 2024's comic scene: we are exercising cautious optimism.

Prices may dip, but bargains abound, especially in older eras. Movie hype boosts specific issues, but reader fatigue looms. AI and economic woes cloud the industry, but smaller publishers and undervalued genres shine through.

The future's uncertain, but the passion for stories remains. Embrace the journey, enjoy the gems, and remember: it's about the comics, not just the market.

Next year, around this time, we’ll look back and see what we got right… and where we went horribly wrong.

Now, enjoy the raw takes from the community.

COMMUNITY TAKES

The market is going to continue its correction for the foreseeable future. Fewer buyers equal lower prices. But like everyone else- I can’t see the future… so I’m just making an educated guess.

joshscomicbooks

Grails and mega keys will surge as people continue to sell minor keys and move up into those books.

Ga_comicbook_guy

I predict pain.

grailwallcomics

I’m predicting a mass migration to GA and pulps. Pulps are kind of the Wild West right now, but as soon as grading drops, I think people will start to move that way on covers alone. The new comic book market will continue to crumble as the movies and shows have just kind of burned everyone out. I think we will see a resurgence in the next decade, but many scams, pandemic pricing, and pump-and-dump schemes burned a lot of new collectors. But we shall see…

kents_komics

Prices will still continue to drop until they hover right above 2018 prices.

theboywhohad7

2024 will be the best year to buy!!

spiderphil

Look what movies are coming out. Now look at every character appearing in those books, yes even the small roles. Those books will go up and then back down once the movie hits. Any mention of anything coming out? Those books will go up. Then we’ll forget about them, so back down. Then the trailer will hit and back up again. Every other book will stay where they are, for the most part.

thedoom143

I predict everything will go to zero, and I can get that Action Comics #1 I've always wanted.

steve_scomics

There is still some room to drop. The price seems to be getting very reasonable and interesting.

realcardwivesofoc

Many Store Variant shops are going to be in a heap of trouble

vintagecomicsandtoys

DC, in general, will skyrocket, and Superman comics will become valuable again. Maybe that Death of Superman stack will finally be worth something lol.

dredraws89

Comic book readers will likely continue to hate everything. They'll hate stuff before it comes out. They'll convince each other not to buy stuff when it comes out because they're precogs and already know it will be trash. Then they'll say, "See! We told you so!" When nobody buys the stuff that they convinced them was gonna be trash. They'll do this for comic movies as well. Everything except Deadpool 3 because they have a secret crush on Hugh Jackman even though he's subpar as Wolverine, and the part is in DIRE need of a recast.

mojo_quid

I wonder if we’ll see more movement of raw books and a reduction in sales of graded books.

Unfortunately this book only goes up to the year 2000.

I predict that anything involving the X-Men will hold it's value and we'll also see some increases based on the expected success of the X-Men '97 Animated Series and Deapool 3.

In a sane world, X-Men would have no value increases as there have been way too many films, shows, toys and video games.

But the hobby is anything but sane.
