SpongeBob Comics #1 sells for $991! Record sale?20200

SpongeBob Comics #1 sells for $991! Joosh private msg quote post Address this user

SpongeBob Comics #1 is one of my long term hold books, so I keep an eye on sales. This one came out of nowhere; listed on MCS for 4 days and sold for far higher than I’ve seen prior. I wanted to share considering MCS sales tend not to get recorded by the common value trackers.
In the 5 years I’ve been following this issue, this is the 2nd 9.8 newsstand edition I’ve seen up for sale.
Another thing I noticed is all the high grade copies (all direct edition) languishing in MCS suddenly disappeared; presumed sold.
I don’t know of any news that would’ve made people hot for this book.
Regardless, it is refreshing to see some comic book action amidst all the falling and stagnant prices as of late.

Stephen Hillenburg did pass in 2018, the book, I think, is named after his company, but I don't know, just a few things.

Looks like 2 people had it on thier want lists and one beat the other to it. Checked his email first and didn't want to mess around with the price and now owns a newsstand 9.8

Paramount plus pulled an episode in the past week. Apparently cable and television streaming did a while ago. This has no relation I’m sure, but it is “Spongebob News”.

I’m one of them, I was beaten out of it. Who is… The Other??? I wouldn’t have paid that much as I already have my copy and have been spending all my discretionary income on a certain sports car lately.

Mid Life Crustacean. Great episode. Nickelodeon never explicitly said why it was pulled a few years ago other than for inappropriate content. It's pretty much assumed the panty raid scene is what did it. There was another episode called Kwarantined Krab that was pulled two years ago. Not sure of its quality but it apparently had too many parallels with that which shan't be named for fear of being suspended.

@Joosh, when I first joined the forum years back you had a 9.8 up for sale. We had some private messages back and forth. Long story short, I missed out on the book and have regretted it ever since it then. Shipping and or pick up claimed a sweet score for 300. I chalk it up to me having no experience dealing with sellers at that time.

Two episodes of the animated series “SpongeBob SquarePants” have been removed from the Nickelodeon cable network — one because of sensitivity related to the pandemic and another for not being “kid-appropriate,” the network said on Tuesday.

The cartoon, which debuted in 1999 on Nickelodeon, follows the underwater misadventures of a talking yellow sea sponge named SpongeBob, who works at a fast-food restaurant, and his starfish buddy Patrick and other aquatic friends.

One episode, titled “Kwarantined Crab,” centers on a virus story line, David Bittler, a spokesman for Nickelodeon, said on Tuesday. The episode features a health inspector who visits the fast-food restaurant where the main character works and finds a case of the “clam flu.”

The episode “was never put on the schedule to be sensitive to the pandemic outbreak last year,” Mr. Bittler said on Tuesday.

Another episode, “Mid-Life Crustacean,” was removed from rotation on the network in 2018 “following a standards review in which we determined some story elements were not kid-appropriate,” Mr. Bittler said.

That episode followed another character, Mr. Krabs, the owner of the fast-food place, who is feeling old and asks SpongeBob and Patrick if he can join them on a wild night out, according to IMDb.com. The trio breaks into a woman’s house and takes her underwear. CNN reported on the removal of the episodes on Tuesday. The “Mid-Life Crustacean” episode is also no longer on Amazon.

Yea, breaking into a women's house to steal panties isn't such a good thing, lol.

I wonder if my #1 is a newsstand version!?

I picked up some comics based on things my kid watched when he was young (16 now) thinking that maybe 20/30 yrs down the road it might be the type of thing his generation would collect -and he could keep or sell

Spongebob
Skylanders
Duck Tales (new and old series) etc. etc.

@KatKomics here’s a pic of both editions: newsstand on left, direct on right.

I sold my direct 9.8, as @HeinzDad correctly recalls.

I don't follow, what are saying?

I see your 9.0 newsstand is listed at $2K. That's quite optimistic; I believe that's a potential value, but not for about 10yrs. The 9.8 has only just reached the $1K range.

I agree the newsstand edition is the one to hold. I would have kept all 3 copies I've owned had I not needed the money for other things.

drool - Love Too Much Coffee Man!!!
Only problem with fringe characters is that the potential pool of people to sell to is low - and I say this as fan
Even once he hit Dark Horse that still isn't a lot of readers - and of course no new content in ages

I would like to see new Too Much Coffee Man - also more SCUD the Disposable Assassin, even been a while for new Carrot!
