Going thru my PC that has been in storage for over 40 years I stumbled on a 3-set Daredevil issues (180-182) where the signature of Frank Miller appears on the inside splash page. I was an avid collector back in the late 70's early 80s attending many of the smaller Cons in Chicago where I had a number of books signed. Back then it was rare for an artist/writer to sign the front cover... But going thru a thread in a forum here on CBCS I found almost the identical signatures... The question is that on each of these 3 books the signature looks different... Ideally I want to get these 3 books pressed and encapsulated and have the signatures authenticated. Just not sure on the signings.. I cant recall if Frank Miller was there signing at the Con or they had some kind of thing where you ordered the books and they were shipped "signed". I recall that John Byrne did that for the Silver Surfer Vol2 Issue 1 where you handed in an address and paid for a book and shipping (via the Con) where he signed the cover across the surf board and it was mailed to my house. how times have changed...

I just got it back from CBCS where the signature was confirmed.. Look for it on eBay!!

Any thoughts?

Looks like he was cool with signing one book but lost patience with the second and third books.

I have seen several artists who have multiple ways of signing a r have had the signatures change over time, so not to say that isn’t his signature but it does not look like what his signature is these days. I met Frank Miller a few months back and it’s looks way different now. That said, the man is old, and shows signs of challenges to his health and it appears he may have arthritis or something if the sort. His art these days also doesn’t have the same feel of his previous work

@DoorCntyComicColl - Welcome to the forum! You received those three DD books through a 1982 promotion run by Lonestar Comics (MCS.com now). I have them too, and had them slabbed and authenticated by CBCS. They should all pass, based on my results.

Absolutely. Evident in how the accentuated “FMR” in his sig morphed into something more closely resembling FML.

That was my first thought.

After signing your name a hundred times plus, your signature changes.

As soon as I read your comment, that name (LoneStar Comics) rang a bell!!! The cool thing is I may have lucked out on issue #180 which for some reason is a Newsstand edition. I'm trying to think back if that was what I had done with the Silver Surfer Vol2 #1 with Byrnes' signature. I recall meeting him at Larry's Comics on Devon Ave. in Chicago. That was the goto place for comic books... he signed a few books and he offered to draw any character for $10 so I asked for him to sketch a pencil drawing of Frankie Rayes, aka Nova, right after that intro issue of FF #244 came out in 1982. Figured no one would have something like that.

Appreciate the feedback!! I will submit them to get authenticated...

Was the DD 180 the only book that you sent in for grading/verification? Just curious what the total cost was with round-trip shipping and insurance?

Is FML an abbreviation for F My Life?

How astute of you.

Wouldn’t be the first time he let some cursing subtly slip through the cracks:

As far as actual costs go I just got back my first shipment of 5 books from CBCS which included the Silver Surfer Vol2 #1 with J Byrnes sig along with a 4 book set of Starslayer 1-4 (Pacific Comics) signed on the cover by Mike Grell. The total cost ran about $71 per book (grading, sig authentication, CBCS shipping/insurance/fees and my shipping and insurance to get them to CBCS, and don't forget the $0.60 I paid for each book). My Starslayer #1 actually had a Grell signature on page 1 as well as the cover so I was charged an additional $25 for a 2nd signature verification. Which is OK with me as the verification came back as legit. I have all 5 on eBay and I guess we will see if anyone is interested.

I will say by getting books graded (ones I have in storage and never read.. yes I was that guy that would buy 3-5 copies of each one that I read and enjoyed reading and store the others for future sales... only its taken 40 years)... Even with that cost I regret not getting the books pressed.. AGGH!!!!. The grading came back with a range of 8.5 - 9.6. Pressing would have helped all of them and bump the grading looking at these pressable defects.

My next submission will include the 3 DD signed Miller issues. The fact these got signed and manhandled show flaws (non-color breaking tics and minor creases) I learned my lesson so I am going to include a pressing. The overall cost will more than likely be towards the $80-$90 range

Haven't thought of that. I wonder if that's a coincidence or not. Sigs look good tho!

FML, all the kids used to say it.🤣🤣🤣 Nice books/sigs. Bill Sienkiewicz(Bill Sin-Kev-Itch) has changed a little as well, my Moon Knight #1 was signed in 85' with a BS. I was a little nervous sending it in. It was authenticated by CBCS.
