submitting my first comic20083

Collector chuchie private msg quote post Address this user
i understand that i am responsible for paying for insurance when submitting a book to cbcs, but what about the insurance return of the book. am i responsible for paying for that?

my previous (first) post featured my hulk 181 that i found. and that is the comic I am submitting for grading, pressing and slabbing and i dont what else. not familiar with all the conditions and options or explanations on the submission page. but i ended up at $215.00. Is that a normal/common cost that most people pay? (and i am not even sure what it is i am paying for exactly) wut a rookie......

any advice?

The Service levels are described on this page. There are three factors that determine the cost and only one you have real control over. 1) Age of the book (IH181 was released in 1974 so you automatically go to Vintage or Premium level), 2) FMV (IH181 is an expensive book that can easily clear the $4k or $7k levels depend on the condition) 3) how fast you want it back (20 day, 15, 10, 5). If its FMV is over $7k then you only have the 10 day $140 option or 5 day $200 option for grading.

The system MIGHT default to the more expensive option, but I havenโ€™t tried it

thanks for ur info! i have another question..........is fed ex the only shipper that cbcs uses? they are the only shipping option listed on the submission form.

I suggest taking far too many photos of the front and back cover and the inside of the book to show that the marvel value stamp is either intact or missing and insuring it for the FMV of a graded copy of what you think the grade is. Looking forward to seeing the results.

CBCS used to have UPS as an option but there were a lot of shipping issues during the pandemic leaving FedEx as the only option

That's too much. You should just use "Vintage Priority" tier. Plus Pressing. Insure the book for $4000.

That's $105
+$25 for Shipping

I'd get your own return insurance if I were you. CIS should cover Fed Ex shipments that are Signature Required.
But if you use CBCS's insurance, that's another $64

That should still only total $194.

Saves a lot in shipping costs.

Happiness is a grading higher than expected! i just got back my Hulk 181 from cbcs and the grade was an 8.5! so my next question is regarding selling it. where and how would i realize max value for this comic? simply sell it for a set price? auction it off? (i know nothing about any auctions), consignment (dont know anything about that either), advertise on craigslist?..........

any ideas hints advice direction you can spare, wud b appreciated!

First off, congrats on the awesome grade! If you want to determine the FMV, there's a few ways to go about doing it. GPA Analysis is a great site that can give you data on recent sales. Or, you can search eBay to see recent sales as well -- just use the filter and click on "sold items." You can also look at reputable sellers -- mycomicshop.com; comic link; heritage auctions; and comic connect, to name a few. I believe you can see past sales on comic link and heritage if you have an account.

In terms of selling, start here. Lot of folks on the forum might be interested in the book, and you can avoid consignment and/or auction fees. You can also post it on eBay, but the listing fees can be pretty steep. If you're going to sell it by consignment, I highly recommend mycomicshop.com (MCS). If you want to auction it, you can also use MCS, Comic Link, or Heritage.

As for obtaining "max value," it's all about what you want and how quickly you want to sell. In my opinion, fixed price gets you more value, but it can take a long time to sell a big book like that. An auction will guarantee the sale -- but you can't control how much it sells for. Will you get FMV? Maybe. Will you get less? Maybe. Will you get more? Maybe.

The good news for you is that it's the holidays. Good chance people are looking to buy, plus, for example, you have MCS's Prime Auction coming up at the beginning of the year, which is a great time to list a book like that.

A lot of people sell on social media, like Facebook, Instagram and Whatnot. To be honest, I don't have a lot of experience on that front, but you could try listing it on certain comic groups on Facebook or on their Marketplace.

Either way, congrats and good luck!

Selling to a collector directly means no fees. Selling it as a buy it now or auction on EBay is about a 12% fee to EBay. You can look at EBay sales to get a ballpark of what a 8.5 with your page quality sells for. Buy it now nearly always sells for more than auction, but you will either have to wait or occasionally drop your asking price. You can do Buy it now, best offer allowed and see what offers you get.
You can take it to a comic book store, might get 40-70% of the EBay sales price. The same at a comic con.
I personally only do Buy it now, no offer on EBay and are very patient, as I do not care if anything sells.

@chuchie - Congratulations on such a great grade! As many have already said, asking prices can be all over the place. Look at recent sold prices. For example, a CBCS 8.5 Hulk #181 sold at an October MCS auction for $5,500. According to Go Collect, the 30-day sales average is currently $5,697, with a high sale of $6,211 and a low sale of $4,920 (which is also the most recent sale). Let me know if you also happen to have an ASM #129 lying around. Good luck!

I am very disheartened to hear about the pricing u mentioned. those prices are a sight less than some of the prices asked for at HIP Comics. there is one hulk181 8.5 listing at 7199. Is HIP comics a good place to buy/sell comics? OH...and as luck wud have it, I do have asm129. and as far as i can determine, it is at least as gud as my hulk181-8.5. but it isn't graded. Maybe i shud.
anyway, wud preesheate ur input about HIP.

@chuchie Here's some data on sales from 2019-23. It's still going for above lockdown prices but it's possible with the crashing market it'll go down to slightly higher than it was selling for in 2019. I'd hold onto it for some time if you aren't in need of the money. It might go up slightly when Deadpool 3 comes out or it might take a few years for the market to recover.

Advertised prices are no indication of anything, so that HipComic listing isn't important. If you have an ebay account with a decent sales history you can try to get an account at myslabs.com, which will only charge you 1%. The benefit of this is you can still keep the comic in your possession. If you are thinking about consigning I think mycomicshop.com would be your best bet.

You can also try posting pictures and selling it here. At the very least share some photos as everyone here likes seeing cool books.

The screenshots I posted are from covrprice.com. I don't know where they get their data from or how accurate it is.

Sometimes books sell better at fixed prices than at auctions. Also there are varying page qualities and not all 8.5's are equal. Some appear to be overgraded, some accurately, some undergraded and some just present far better than others. If the colors are more vivid, the comic is better centered, and if there isn't a miswrap, it'll sell for much higher.

Here's a few examples, disregard the grades:

Centered

Portion of back cover showing on front (miswrap), print off-center

Off-center print, comics code partially cut off on the upper right

Doesn't make sense to value a comic book based on the ones that haven't sold.
