@Stonecollector Up until around 1981 newsstand copies were more common than direct issue. In most cases you'll find the newsstand issue after this time are more valuable. Some people see a newsstand and automatically think they're worth more. This is not always the case. Rarity and desirability are the driving factor for market value.

An example is Ultimate Fallout 4, 1st appearance of Mile Morales. The direct issue is listed on Covrprice for FMV of $1429 in a 9.8, the newsstand is $8100. The book was published in 2011 and the newsstand were very uncommon at the time. The desirability, 1st appearance of a popular character and the scarcity of the newsstand make it worth a lot more.

There are always exceptions to the rule that a newsstand after 1981 is worth more, but I use this as driving factor to determine what I will pay for a newsstand.

Most of the books I buy today have a barcode either on the front or the back. Almost all the books I see with no barcode are older direct issue covers. ASM #252 is a prime example. It has a Spider-Man logo where the barcode would normally be.

If the viagra is working you should be well over a 9.8. xkonk private msg quote post Address this user
Like @Belarak said, comics used to be sold only view newsstand. There was no direct edition until the early 80s and they weren't sold in equal numbers until around 1985 (off the top of my head). So there's no particular point in paying a premium for a newsstand unless it's from the late 80s or later, IMO.

The reason that they get a premium is the rarity but also condition. The thought is that newsstand books are less likely to be in top condition because they were out on shelves where people thumbed through them and whatnot. So the difference in price shows up mostly at the top end of the grading scale.

As for current books, all of mine have barcodes. They scan them in on the computer at the store. They might be on the back sometimes though. But there is no newsstand any more, all comics are direct edition.

There are some channels outside the direct market, specifically big box stores (Wal-Mart in particular). Not a big value difference, but they do exist.

ASM 252 is also one of those books where the fact that a book is a newsstand edition will be marketed by sellers, since many buyers uncritically think that newsstand=rarer & more valuable, but if ebay listings are anything to go by, seems to be far and away more common in newsstand than direct.

I don't believe this....and I know you don't care that I don't believe this. GAC private msg quote post Address this user
Here's another example...this is a direct edition sold cheaper than the newsstand even though the newsstand was more common at the time.

That's a fair point but a) they don't have a newsstand-style barcode and b) CGC and CBCS label them as variants, not newsstands. For example, https://www.ebay.com/itm/225006116762

My non-data driven opinion? - I always look for the newsstand regardless of the year published (including early 80s)

I have no particular fondness for newsstands but it just seems so so much more difficult to find 9.8 candidates of a book in a newsstand no matter what the newsstand/direct ratio was at the time.

Many have the same perception.
And if there is a perception it is harder in a 9.8, then values will reflect.
